@@mirjam293 Just curious. How many litter boxes do you have? Do they each have their own? I only have one cat that's why I'm asking. Cats are VERY clean! And don't get me started on people who don't take care of their animals. The people who lived in the apartment next to me abandoned their dogs. They had been in there almost 3 weeks with no food, water or AC (I live in Florida) before maintenance noticed and called animal control. It was a Friday and they said they'd be back Monday to get them. I ended up calling the police at 4am because they started yowling and it was breaking my heart knowing they were trapped in that environment and breathing that air. I have never seen or smelled such horrendous conditions. They pooped and peed in the living room, but stayed in one of the bedrooms. She is being charged, one of them died. 😥

A little fluffy grey cat began living under my carport. I figured that she must've been a lost pet, so I put up found cat signs around my neighborhood. Nobody claimed her, so I decided to keep her. Once I let her inside, she never wanted to go outside ever again. 😂 She sometimes sits by the window, looking outside and hisses. There's never been anything out there. I think she's hissing at the outside because she really dislikes being outdoors now. That's the only thing I can think of that she's hissing at.😂 Otherwise, she's a really nice cat.

One of my cats totally changed when I was a kid because of the lazer pointer. She became obsessed with the red dot, and would look for it everywhere. It was obvious that she was frustrated, and she never really like normal toys after that. Since then, I have learned that tangible toys, like a ball of foil, paper airplanes, strings, etc are the best way to play, because they can actually catch it and sink their teeth/nails into it.

My cat Ceasar never gave up on me, while everyone else had. If you give them a chance, they are incredible friends. There was one period several years ago, for a few long months; where Ceasar was concerned more about my health than I was... Yet he never gave up. If i was doing something bad, he never stopped doing what he could to protest. It's hard to explain unless you have a close relationship with a cat. He knows I have some bad habits. He does his best to be involved in my well being. He keeps a close eye on me. He encourages rest, eating, and healthy routine. He gets upset when I let him down.

I have found that it's OK to scold my cat; however, one must keep in mind that they are incredibly sensitive little creatures. For that reason, a well-timed No! or uhUH serves the purpose. No need to carry on. At that point your cat is well aware that you are displeased. Offering them an alternative at that point is a great idea, like showing them their scratching post if you have caught them scratching the furniture. I should add that some cats never learn indoor behavior, and escalating the scoldings will have no affect other than to make them afraid of you or make them dislike you. At the end of the day, your cat is who he is.

She was about 4 weeks at the time. We think she was abandoned because she was the runt, as she is still on the small side. She was born wild, and so has that wild spirit. It will take some time and patience, but we will get there. In the mean time, she has a room that we are adding on, and the back yard. The room is not yet furnished (except with her stuff, like chairs with beds & heating pads, and a cat tower. I’ve had cats that more or less doesn’t do it again, and I’ve also had a cat who understood it but thought it’s not quite mandatory to obey it :) There’s a difference from saying “no” to your cat and a cat being frightened.

About the scolding part.. depends on how you scold them. Cats understand what we say and they listen. My cat has a scratcher and he uses it, but since he's a puppy and he's developing to sign the territorio with his claws, he tried to cratch the wooden forniture of the hallway. I said firmly:"Lucio, no". My cat looked at me and meowed, like responding to me "But Mooom", like any child or teenager would do, and I simply repeated "no". He didn't scratch the forniture anymore. Don't treat your cat like if they're stupid, they know what you're saying and some proper scolding for teaching him how to behave, they do listen. Same goes for dogs, if you scold them in a proper manner for make them understand where they did wrong, they listen.

I love 💕 my cat so much. I've had him since he was a teeny baby, and he's 12 years old now. He greets me every day when I get home from work, follows me all around the house, lays on the floor on his back with his belly up- he is without a doubt the BEST cat in the world! I just love him so much! He is my baby. He's not a cuddler, and never sits on my lap, but if I'm at my desk, he comes and lays down right in front of me, and we cuddle like that. I give him scratches and rubs, and hugs and kisses- sometimes for an hour or two. I sleepwalk, and no word of a lie- if he sees me, and he can reach me, he will wake me up with his paw by tapping me. That is just the SWEETEST thing ever! ☺️I honestly care about cats more than I care about humans, not counting my own family, of course, but I don't get emotional over people being abused or homeless, but I can't bare to see or hear about cats being abused or unwanted because it upsets me so much. One thing this video could have mentioned is it hurts your cat's feelings if you don't provide preventative and necessary medical care. They need to see their doctors regularly! Especially senior cats. I also don't let my cat even THINK about going outside. He is strictly an indoor kitty. Cats are AMAZING! They are the BEST! 🥰😻

I completely agree that cats are the best. I have a female black kitty who’s about to turn 8 in April. Her name is Wednesday, but I just call her Baby. She follows me around the apartment and always parks next to me. We sleep together all curled up in bed. I was always a dog person and never really thought about cats. But 8 years ago I had a roommate who asked if he could adopt one. I was kind of reluctant but said okay. When Baby got home guess who bonded with her?! Lol. We became so close that when my friend friend moved a couple years ago, I told him that Baby was staying. Luckily, it all worked out and she’s mine forever. 😻🐈🐈🐈

My cat is wonderful! She is very vocal about food or wanting to go outside better than my dog sometimes. I always ask: Show me what you want?: and she does every time. I have also trained her to be able to acknowledge when the weather is bad outside. When she wants to go out and it is raining I tell her so. I pick her up, open the door and say: See it is raining outside. ( she accesses what I am saying ) She then realizes I am right and then she quits asking to go outside. She is very smart. She was a little ball of fur when we found her outside our house. Positively a beautiful animal! She is a bout a year old now and is such a good friend. Yes on petting. I figured that out fast. She is fine with cheek, head and back petting. Paws and belly off limits. Yes I always acknowledge my cat when coming home every time. Dog to. This is extremely important. When your gone away for 8 to 10 hours they wait patiently for us to come home and are always glad to see us! Respect is involved and it should be shown to them. They have missed us all day long. You definitely would not ignore your spouse upon returning home! They are just as important!! I have learned a few other valuable things in this video. Especially about the laser chasing thing. We had no idea about a reward after doing so. Sweet! My cat is also excellent about being called by her name every time and she always comes back to the house or even in the house pretty fast! Sometimes we clap our hands while calling her name when outside. This helps if she is a little bit out of vocal range. Lucy. Excellent video. Thanks!

Actually with dogs it's recommended you don't make a big fuss before you leave or after you return as that teaches them it's a traumatic experience being away from you. You end up with a dog that becomes completely co dependent and can't handle being alone.

Is something wrong with your cat for her not to see that it's raining and instead for you to tell her? Hear me out, maybe, JUST MAYBE, that when the cat sees the rain, she realizes on her own that she doesn't want to go out there regardless of what you say. I know that's a HUGE leap in logic but I'm pretty sure that's the number one reason. Unless your cat is that stupid to not see rain, or blind. If my cat sees it's raining, she won't go outside. I don't have to say anything to her. Maybe my cat is just that much of a genius though.

My 7 month old kitten has no issue me rubbing her belly or touching her tail, paws. She doesn't even mind when I have to trim her nails, in fact one time she rested her eyes while being in my lap while trimming her nails and another time she was pouring but not because she was suffering but because she felt safe. I'M truly blessed to have such a well behaved cat considering I've seen how crazy cats can get especially when having to trim their nails.

Cats mostly freak out because they weren't taught at a young age that it's okay! You're teaching your baby at a young age that it's safe, and okay - that getting their nails trimmed isn't scary! Good job! I've gotten mine MOSTLY used to it, and even got mine to learn to be more gentle with their claws for the most part.

im autistic and introverted. this made me realize that i am very similar to a cat. its pretty interesting when you think about it. i need my own little dark nook to escape to, like a closet or just a small corner where i can relax and observe from the outside. i hate being bothered during that time. im also prone to feeling misunderstood and over looked for my abilities. i can be quite sensitive even though i may not always show it and am good at covering up when i am stressed. im quite independent and like to explore and mess around with things, in my own time of course. im pretty quiet but i show my love and understanding in different ways to most people, even if i can seem kind of cold or indifferent. i like to reserve my energy for when i need it most, so i do like to laze around but i still prioritize activity and health. im very keen and attuned to my surroundings in ways others arent. to the point where it can be overwhelming or overstimulating for me. i wear noise cancelling headphones because of how loud and stressful things can be. my sense of smell is through the roof. it may not be like a cat's where i can smell stuff from very far away, but i tend to notice a smell before anyone else does, or even notice a smell that no one else does. even the meowing aspect was interesting, because it is very akin to masking in autistic people who try to communicate with others who arent autistic. i am quite nonverbal unless i need to or i want to discuss a topic of interest. other than that i force myself to speak so others can understand me without any difficulties. this honestly may be the reason why i dont like to be around cats sometimes because its like interacting with a small me😂

They are actually very sensitive and intuitive to us! I agree/disagree with the "scolding". No, I don't yell at them or hit them, animals should never be hit. But when they get in the bathroom and tear up the toilet paper, when they hear me coming, they run out of the room, they know! LOL

I can't fathom people who hit or yell at their animals, cat or dog. All it takes is a gentle soft tone of voice praising them with words associated with what they did right and petting them while pointing to the good thing they did and repeating the word. Same thing for telling them no. Just lower your voice, scowl and say no scratching, etc. Cats are just as trainable as dogs, in my experience. My 10 year old cat has a tremendous vocabulary and understands so many words it's crazy. People who say cats don't care about people must lack the ability to truly bond with animals. My kitty adores me and gets so excited when I get her up every morning, she's running around meowing and her fur gets all fluffy. She has a little round bed next to me she sleeps in all day despite her towers in her bedroom. She follows me into whatever room I'm working in. Sometimes it's fun to play hide and seek and with her. edit: If there is yelling in the household, like parents screaming at each other or at kids, that causes extreme distress and trauma in dogs AND cats...and babies. It physically hurts their sensitive ears and over time it emotionally scars them and makes them feel unsafe, which can cause aggression. Don't yell!

I totally disagree that they don't understand wrong doing and/or why they are shouted at when they do. My eldest cat sometimes bullies my youngest and when she's shouted at for so doing, she runs away with her tail UP not down. Forty years ago I had a cat that scratched the sofa, when I shouted at her, she'd look straight at me, flatten her ears and double her efforts until I was within a hair's breadth of her, when she'd run off - again, tail up as if saying "Ha-ha can't catch me!"

The thing about not scolding or punishing your cat because they can’t make the connection that they’ve done something wrong is completely and provably untrue, and just leads to badly behaved cats. My fiancée and I have raised and trained a total of 4 cats together, and she used to have plenty more when she was younger. Scolding or punishing (usually just with water from a spray bottle) is quite effective, and you can definitely tell the cats understand pretty quickly and easily why they’re being punished, and that there are certain things they’re not supposed to do, or places they’re not supposed to go.

It may seem like it, but I think they just avoid doing those things when we're around. If we're not around, they probably still do those things. I had this experience with my cat--I used tactics like that, and could tell my cat was scared, and I'd hear her "breaking rules" when she didn't think anyone knew. I still regret punishing her, as it was harmful to our bond. I found some behaviorist tips useful, like one can deter a cat from "banned" places with a motion sensor that puffs out a little air or beeps, so the cat associates the air/beep with the place and not us. One can also give the cat other ways to meet their need, like having an alternative stool if we don't want them on the counter.

Yeah I really miss my cat - he lived to be nearly 19 years old. His passing isn't recent though, it's been over a decade, but I still think about him - he was awesome. My cat was smart enough that it was pretty clear what he liked and didn't like, and it was basically the same as figuring out a human - most of his reactions were pretty much on. They're the best - one thing some cat owners sorta lose sight of or never even think about (somehow...), is cleanlines. Cats are usually decent at taking care of themselves and keeping clean... but then there are cats who aren't. They can learn though. Some cats need a little encouragement. It doesn't really take all that much though - even though cats generally dislike it, keeping them clean with a slightly warm bath - and then help dab them with a towel as much as you can - and they'll angrily groom themselves until they think they won't melt - most of the time, whether they like it or hate it, they will LEARN to be cleaner if they aren't already. I notice a lot of cat owners don't smell very good - dog owners too - because they don't notice the scents and don't clean up after their litter box enough. It isn't good - but some people go to the extreme and don't even notice the scent of ammonia. ...not a great idea to use strongly scented shampoos meant for humans - I forget what we always used, but it was something that wouldn't hurt their eyes etc, if it happened to get in them. Not that it ever did - as much as he hated it, his struggle was limited once he realized it was all wet, and slippery, and he just wanted me to get it over with. My cat was always salty for an hour or so after we bathed him - but we had to do it so rarely it wasn't really even a thing he thought about afterward - he didn't like the bath tub for most of his life, but that was actually due to him following his curiosity right into someone else's bath, haha - he stopped being afraid of the bathtub, etc too, eventually, but that's pretty much expected with age and experience. He still didn't like it, though - but that's fine, because he intentionally dumped cups of water on me a bunch of times and no, he wasn't thirsty - he was instigating. His eyes said it all. A little karma is good for them too, sometimes, haha. Training a cat is sometimes as easy as paying attention to them, to the extent they're "trainable" anyway... they basically just have to learn what you want or find acceptable naturally, since you can't use words - at least not until the cat learns what the sounds you make mean. They'll take note if you do it consistently though - even if they seem like they're ignoring you or are even annoyed, but they do learn because they want to make you happy / not make you mad / not have YOU make THEM annoyed. It's just one of those things - you DO have to be attentive if you don't want your cat to avoid you - just like a human would. The same way we all do.

Number 5 I really don't agree with. If this was the case, then why do cats understand the human doesn't want them on the counter? I absolutely know that cats understand the basics of what they are doing when someone yells or reacts a certain way. I feel they ignore it sometimes to push boundaries, or just straight up forgot, or it's because of their quick instincts like scratching.
@BirgitProfessional
@BirgitProfessional 4 ай бұрын
I agree partly - they definitely know in the moment that they shouldn't keep doing a certain thing if you scold them. But it has to be in the moment of the unwanted behavior. If you scold them 5 minutes after they've already stopped doing the unwanted thing, it does nobody any good, they won't connect the scolding to the bad behavior. If I catch my cat on the counter, I clap my hands and say NO and she'll get down and knows that I don't want her on the counter. But if my cat pukes on the carpet while I'm asleep, and I find the stain in the morning, there's no use in scolding her, she wouldn't know why she's being scolded in that moment. I also don't scold her if she gets on the counter during the night and steals something or makes a mess, even though I obviously know that she did, in the morning. No use.

I like this because it's very true..my cat was a rescue cat and had spent a long time or part.of her formative life in a rescue centre in kitten. She was 19moths old when I had her and very playful as a kitten..told she would always be a house cat, didn't like being picked up but liked sitting on their owners lap when feeling a sense of trust! She is an old girl now and is 15 in March, and has had to put up with much in living here that I have felt very sorry for her not having a peaceful home environment...she is more than aware of where the noise is centered...She is beautiful and intelligent but also quirky and shy..she has to trust you before allowing for closeness...Anyway she has had attempts made against her for being outdoors..and this wasn't pleasant for her..missing 2 days, kept locally and dismissed as important but my forever companion...anyway that aside a mental note has been made with self of the incident and it has been logged. Whom would want to Hurt an innocent animal shows mentality issues..so now I keep her indoors, lest it might occur again...she likes a sniff around and always eager for the warmth again after a couple of hours..but all you say is specifically true of her..thank you, love and light and namaste 😊

Great to see a video like this. There are so many people out there who haven't got a clue about cats and their behavior. I have seen so many videos of people shouting and pointing at their cats... Don't they know that cat can hear even better than a dog?! And why point at them, when it clearly upsets the cat? Sometimes pushing them away when they are sleeping. Just walking by when your cat running towards you when you coming home... I can be so mad at those people. It's like they think they have a dog, "you just give commands and the poor cat will obey". A cat is a cat. Independent, but often very attached to their caretaker. Pride, but also such a sweetheart. Oh there are thousands great things about cats! I can't live without them. But if you want something that just is waiting for your commands... Never up somewhere nocking things over... Stays on the floor... Etc Then a dog is right for you.

my kitty, Jon Snow, greets me with a high raised tail when I come home from work and usually it is twitching. I always give him a soft vocal hello and a rub and head scratch. I adopted him in Oct 2021 as a blind and FIV+ kitty. he is so loving and chill cat

I did the whole multiple litter boxes, they would choose their favorite and only use one. So now I just have one and clean it frequently.

About overwhelming smells: My cat was always curious what I drink in the morning. One time I handed over the coffee I was drinking. After that he isn't curious anymore.

My Gloria used to "yell" at me too.😂 I'd say, "Don't" she'd yell and do it anyways.😂 I miss her rebellious Lil heart. My 2 new cats don't have her same personality. They're much more sensitive and I just have to look or point and they quit whatever behavior.❤

Maybe, but I think it mainly teaches cats what not to do when we're around. I regret reprimanding my cat, as she seemed scared and it harmed our bond, and I'd hear her "breaking rules" when she didn't think anyone knew. I really like the tips in this video, as they're aimed at addressing underlying issues.

I adopted 2 kittens from an animal shelter once, brother and sister (Rupert and Lily). They were bonded so separating them wasn't an option the animal shelter would allow. A few months after having them, Rupert got sick and I can't remember exactly what the illness was, but the vet told us to bring both the cats in together, mainly for comfort reasons. It ended up that Rupert needed to stay for a few days in the office so we had to bring Lily home. When we went to pick up Rupert the vet warned us that Lily might act somewhat aggressive toward her brother because of the strange scents on him from the vet. They were very right and it lasted for almost a week. Rupert would go to be around his sister and she would attack him almost every time. It was really sad to see, but understandable. Someone mentioned taking some pungent liquid and applying a little bit of it on the cats in a place they won't immediately clean off. So we put a tiny bit of water from a can of tuna on each cat and within an hour they were literally back to normal with their relationship. I'm not an expert whatsoever, so this may be a pretty bad practice, but after a week of animosity toward each other, we were willing to try anything. And it did work.

That you own a cat is a myth. You may have purchased them, but once they have explored your home, they have picked out their favorite places and let you live in the house with them.

First time and only 1 cat owner for over the last 17 years, watching this objectively... I agree with pretty much a lot of this, but thats because of what I have learned from my cat just by paying attention to him, and it falls in line with what I have noticed, learned and felt. 👍👍

the arguing, loud voices and the effects on the cat (number 4) are also true of young children - psychological effects later. Coming from both parents, and the child is composed of both, can put a serious split in their minds. Children where the parents never ague in front of the children have healthier minded futures. Do cats actually sense that astmostphere as separation or is it that the loud voices scare them?

I can relate to #4 at work as two coworkers are extremely loud all the time. They both sneeze loud too. I've had to put ear plugs in a couple of times. :(
