If she only bought that house two years ago and the smell has been ongoing for much longer, surely the Seller should have disclosed that issue. She and her lawyer should research and sue the previous owner, the owner's lawyer and the agent for non disclosure.

It is coming from the Oil Recycling plant almost certainly. I was in an industry serving oil and grease recyclers and I can guarantee that in the process more volatile fluids are extracted from the used motor oil. They have systems to capture the liquids and gases coming from this process but a) they are not perfect b) they need to be disposed of and c) some unscrupulous companies will shut off these expensive systems or dispose on the waste water improperly through the sewer when nobody is watching. I've seen this with my own eyes. So the smells will occur if the system breaks down, is shut off or the waste water is dumped in the sewer. There are Olfactometry Systems or Smell Detectors that will actually guide you to the source of a smell. We need to petition the city to place these in the Childs park area and pretty quickly we will know. Not only will it tell us the direction of where the smell but also what kind of odor is it. If its a "Gas" smell it will likely tell us it is volatile gases and if so that is likely proof that it is coming from the oil recycler. So in summary it is either likely coming directly from the plant in Childs Park or it is coming up from the sewers if improper disposal of the waste waters is being made. Then again there are other smaller industrial unit there and they all use volatiles as well, they could be disposing improperly or using improperly as well. Either way we need to petition the city to place these Olfactometry Systems and if this has been an ongoing issue it should have been done long ago.

The source is likely underground pollution from leaking tanks, dumping, etc over the years. If true, the authorities would likely downplay the odor problem, since cleanup costs would be astronomical. Also, likely lose some of their industrial tax base too as companies above the pollution are forced out of business due to liability and unable to sell at any price.

I live in St.Petersburg.Fl.. And know about Childs park. There's no way the local government doesn't know more than their saying. A petition isn't good enough. Get someone qualified. To actually investigate. It's not just coming from no where. The city and or county knows more. The local Christian church's ask God to intervene on behalf of his family. See what he exposes. And be prayed up. Ready for a fight. God bless everyone with "HIMSELF" in Jesus's mighty name I pray and proclaim Amen and Amen.

It smells like gas. Like someone left a gas stove on. It’s very strong sometimes. I didn’t know it was a mystery, you only smell it when you pass the gas plant right across the street. It’s right on the Pinellas Trail

Unground pollution is likely the cause. See my other post. To residents, consider selling and getting something now verses hoping for a government buyout in a decade or two. Maybe the situation isn't that bad, but based on the info mentioned, it seems the issue is far more serious than residents are being told. Hope I'm wrong. Better to go with a sure thing of selling than get caught short.
