Shinnosuke Abe, a Japanese all-star catcher for almost two decades in NPB, described his experience facing Bonds behind the plate in 2002: "Just when I thought the ball got in my catcher's mitt, I realized it went over the fence. I thought I had caught the ball." Otherworldly bat speed/power and plate discipline.

@@tipofthespear6118 Everyone throws that “like everyone else” comment. Maybe to some degree for the steroid era, but it doesn’t work between eras some will claim it is because some players used amphetamines, but it’s a different drug. Bonds numbers exploded after he started using roids around age 35. He went from averaging a HR every 14 plate appearances to one every 8 plate appearances. His SLG climbed roughly 150 points whereas it dropped for other greats at advanced age. While he should be in HOF based on his pre-steroid stats, the roids elevated his stats compared to the other greats, and that should be acknowledged.

Was in Phoenix for a D-backs game when he was with the Giants in 2006. Sat right behind the Giants batter box. Giants had Steve Finely who retired in 2007. We went early to the game and missed the D-backs hitting warm-ups but not the Giants. Finley was the only one who got close to comparing to Bonds but he wasn't even close. Finley hit these awesome line drives all over in the outfield, what a site. Then came Bonds. He hit that ball over the outfield as well with line drives except his went over the fence. Not just barely over the fence either. Many many rows up. One after another. Unbelievable. Must've easily hit over 30 to 40. He had 716 and what should've been 717 that day but his line drive to dead center was no seating at that time. The ball hit on the wall about 20 feet over the outfield fence and it was ruled a double. Wow, just wow! He hit those balls so damn hard and efficient...like it was nothing. A North Dakota boy doesn't get to see many great baseball players but I can always say I got to see Bonds and Ricky Henderson play. That's enough for me!

As a Padres fan I witnessed many of the countless HR's he hit off the Padres but the one I remember the most was when I was in the right field bleachers at Qualcomm stadium and Barry hit one so hard when it traveled over my head you can hear the sizzle of the ball cutting through the air. The ball was still on an upward trajectory and would have gone at least another 100 plus feey out of the entire stadium if not for the jumbotron scoreboard getting in the way. Once the ball hit the scoreboard it came embeddedd in one of the pixel squares of the jumbotron. Everyone in the stands was like amazed at what they just saw. This was prior to all of the steroid talk, the guy was amazing. The only other player I have witnessed hit a ball further in that stadium was Willie Stargell.

As a baseball fan I can say Barry was the best player I ever saw. The fact that he is not in the HOF is a joke! Although his suspected roid use sucks, and as it was said in the video, so many other players were using and a lot were pitchers, he was the best. What is not said enough is the steroids were NOT ILLEGAL in the game at that time! Bud Selig was the commissioner who turned a blind eye to the usage because it made the game relevant and grew fans! How is HE in the HOF and Barry is not?? The HOF is a joke without the best players from their era...regardless of what they were taking to make the game better! There are many men in the HOF that wouldn't be if the same standards were applied then as there are now. The excuses made are based on Character and Sportsmanship: Assessment of a player's integrity, sportsmanship, and character. Barry is not in because he had a bad relationship with the media.

I'll give props to AJ on saying Barry was better than Griffey offensively. Here's why. When Griffey went to Cincinnati, I thought he and Barry would be neck and neck in IBBs year after year. Well, in his first season in Cincinnati, Griffey only mustered 17 intentional walks, while Barry got twice that number. Griffey never ever commanded that level of respect even without the DH in the lineup while in the National League. Plus, outside of his rookie year (100+ K's) Barry didn't strike out at all for a power hitter except for 90+ in '01. Barry was always at least 20-25 less K's than Griffey and FAR more walks. I love Griffey, but Barry commanded way more respect in the area of intimidation when it came to pitching strategy.

@davis2k1234 Ай бұрын
Griffey never had a great hitters eye and he has said he’ll swing at a bad pitch try and get a RBI where as Bonds always had a great eye and would take a walk over a RBI every time so different hitters in that respect plus Bonds was on cutting edge PEDs by 2000 were Griffey was already in phase 1 of his decline in 2000

Roids surely helps with contact though, not that I disagree that he was great. But I get tired of the argument that it only helps you hit the ball further, if you're stronger your bat is quicker, and that results in you swinging and missing less, or the difference between being slightly late or just on time.

He was on stuff... so was lots of others, but they didn't do what he did. The pitchers throwing to him were juiced. Other hitters were juiced. But there was only one Barry. He was the best 5 tool player in MLB before we have any indication of juicing. Amazing player.

But they did.. .with many guys hitting over 50 home runs, 60 and 70. They weren't as good as him because he was a HOF taking steroids where Sosa and McGuire were all stars they weren't HOF's. Cheating is cheating. Worse that he didn't need it but his ego hated watching mid players over shadowing him. F him

Not only intentional walks but lead off intentional walks. I was a season ticket holder down the third base line and got to see him up close. I agree, the greatest offensive threat ever. Imagine his numbers if he had 1000 walks instead of 2500!

As a Giants fan my whole life, I understood how special it was that I was watching all those years with Barry Bonds on the team. Even in all the years where the team stagnated in the standings, it was still exciting to watch the best player I will ever see in my lifetime. And he was on my team!! Fastforward post early 2010s dynasty and there hasn't been a lot to celebrate as a Giants fan while watching our archenemies in the middle of their baseball breaking (total BS) payroll deferments. NGL, when Shohei signed I was pissed and jealous. But then I think back to how spoiled I was to watch a player for over a decade that was on my team and exponentially better than the best player on the Dodgers. Steroids, PEDs, blah blah blah, whatever. Of course Barry did it. But, you can't convince me that many many HOFers haven't done the same in eras before any testing was a thing so it's time for the baseball writers to take the blinders off, get off their high horse, and endorse the induction of the greatest offensive player to ever play the game.

Check out the showdown with Cy Young Eric Gagne in '04. Could a (almost) 40yo Bonds catch up with 103 mph? Dude PULLS it foul into the Bay before homering. What chance did mere mortals have? 688 intentional walks. Insane.

As a doctor who grew up in San Francisco watching Barry play at the height of the steroid era I can say with absolutely confidence that people who discount his accomplishments know next to nothing about either medicine or baseball. Pay attention to who is saying what and you will quickly realize there are no baseball players who try to minimize what he did. Nor will you see many endocrinologists discount what he did. The players know how hard it is to play baseball and the doctors know the limits of PEDs. Greatest player of all time. Juice or no juice.

He was the best hitter ever, and they wouldn't pitch to him half the time!!!!! I remember screaming at the TV, "Pitch to him you puzzys"!!!!! He was a phenom like no other- If they would have pitched to him, and he'd have not been on the juice (assuming he was along with many others), his numbers still would have likely been even higher than they were !!!!!!!!!! Barry made MLB the must see sporting event like few others in the history in sports. Put him in the fking hall already!!!!!!!

I heard a story about when he got called up. I don't know if it's true. Supposedly, Bonds was in AAA playing for Hawaii. GM Syd Thrift told Barry to hit one out to each field on consecutive pitches which he did. The best I've ever seen.

I was a child who worshipped the Giants of the late 80s early 90s. Will Clark was my idol. Then Barry came. I wanted to play like Clark. Steal like Rickey. But man I thought I was Barry Bonds anytime I stepped to the plate. And I didn’t hit homers but I could hit it in play every time, a double machine. Griffey was the next guy with the pretty swing and barring injury he would have been even better. But to this day it’s Barry for me

He was so good that he was (is) envied and feared by most voters to the HOF. Steroids might give you strength, muscles, but it can not do is to teach you how to be better in the game, hot to perfect it, how to excel. HOF must be voted by players, not by people behind a desk.

You're not asking the right question. 'How great was Barry Bonds, Really?' Bonds sublime pedigree helped Jeff Kent, but it got Kent left out of HOF due to EC media hate despite Bonds NOT testing + for steroids. Baseball media stars hated Bonds because writers didn't create him.

The irony being that he was a 1st ballot hall of famer without the juice. Check out his stats during his Pittsburgh run and then especially the first few years in San Francisco. All time great player. Threw away his legacy juicing to chase home runs. Not dissimilar to A-Rod. Sad.
