Found a FANTASTIC AGATE While Rockhounding the Yellowstone River - Montana Petrified Wood & Agates

Kip and I were lucky to get out on the Yellowstone River for a nice afternoon of rockhounding. We found some absolutely fantastic agates along the way as well as some nice petrified wood, jasper, and other cool rocks.

We had a beautiful golden retriever that would rock hound with us. She'd wade into the river, feel around for a rock, She'd then back up to shore rolling the rock till she could get hold of it. She'd bring it to me. So cute. She's like, I know you guys like these for some reason, so here you go.

It is absolutely incredible that we had the same kinds of finds recently. I have just gotten permission this spring to look in an old gravel pit right off the West Fork of the White River, Southern Indiana!

When I was a kid I would collect rocks from the stops we made on vacation out west in Canada. After watching your videos I have a little agate piece in my little collection, never knew what kind of rock it was.

Agate Angler it was back in grade 9, it was on our way out west between Banff and Vancouver. I remember picking rocks out of the Fraser but we also stopped off at a lot of trails on the way and whenever I saw something I thought looked unique I would pick it up. Brought home like 10 kg of rocks...LOL

Don't know a thing about rocks but your excitement is addictive. And if I ever go "rock hounding" here in Texas I better bring my water spray bottle! I am more into blue colors. Like that tiny baby blue looking rock at 11:39 to the right of the petrified rock you were looking at. If you had a whole bucket of those baby blue colored rocks, I may be interested.

Your haul today was off the charts! I was reading the comments and I have a suggestion for you, look on Amazon for black lights. I picked up a long and a short wave battery powered LEDs that have given me reliable service for a long time and both were under 50 bucks! Another tip is to get yourself a copy of Roadside Geology of Montana, I just got mine yesterday and your state is crazy interesting! Almost as crazy as Washington/ Oregon is!

BUT, be careful with both and especially the short wave.....eye injury and, as an ex professional welder I can damn well state with utter certainty, gettingbflashed really sucks! Great finds Angler! Don't beauties like that here in Central Illinois. Last year I bought a box of Montana Agates. They sure can fool you sometimes. Take one that looks kind of drab and cut it to find lovely patterns inside. Small tumblers I don't cut. Those big ones the size of a potato do you ever slice them up? Keep me drooling with some more videos!

Paul, I'm just getting started with some cutting recently. I only have a tile saw with about a 1.5 inch cutting length, but it gets the job done for small to medium sized rocks. The Montana agates really are amazing. Such variety, and I totally know what you mean about the patterns inside. Often the have very subtle banding that really pops out when polished.

I think my mouth was gaping open for most of your video. My tongue feels a little dry. What incredible finds! I've tumbled something that looks like your porphyry that I've been calling volcanic breccia. It looks more like what you picked up than what I've found on Google for breccia. Some of it has polished really well and some just so so. It will be interesting to see how yours come out. Kip the rockhound! Good boy! Thank you for an exciting trip to the river, Alex!

That makes sense. Porphyry can look pretty similar to breccia. And usually (in the darker porphyry anyway) the bigger crystals, or "phenocrysts", are feldspar, which does polish up well, and the groundmass is amphiboles and pyroxenes, which may or may not polish. In breccia, usually the cement between the rock bits are a mineral like quartz, calcite, fluorite etc... Minerals that typically are deposited by fluid (aqueous) in veins. And the bits of rock are broken off from already-solid rock. In some breccia you can see how the pieces would fit together if there wasn't cement between them. But not always. Sometimes a breccia represents an area of movement along a fault, which can eventually travel kilometers. Also, sometimes finer material is washed away from in between the larger pieces in breccia, so the pieces don't appear to fit together. Whereas a porphyry is fully igneous, the crystals forming while the magma is still a liquid. Hope this is helpful! Happy hounding!

@@thirstfast1025 This is very helpful, thank you! I think I need to start calling my rocks porphyry because the crystals would never fit together. They're small and pretty randomly distributed throughout the surrounding material, which is of many different colors. One of my favorites is a pink and tan combination. None of them has ever polished to a glassy finish but they've taken on a kind of matte finish that shows off the patterns very nicely. I found them in a creek that runs through a very volcanic area in southwest Idaho, along with very dense black basalt, very bubbly brick orange basalt, and some iron stained quartz. I've found a few pieces of jasper there as well. I'm about a 1 year old rockhound so I'm learning tons of stuff as I watch these wonderful videos. Thanks again!

The rock at 11:40, if it is dark blue, may be sodalite. I can not tell if its black or dark blue. Sodalite will fluoresce a spotty orange color under UV light. Good hunting

@@AgateAngler Oooooo, the kind of question that gives me goosebumps (in the excited-to-gush way)! Okay, I'll start with the short answer so you don't have to read a lecture. They're colonies of cyanobacteria (I think that's most of the time, but once in a while they are made of other organisms, but not sure) that grow in shallow coastal waters. Usually marine, but there are freshwater varieties too. They capture small mineral grains suspended in the water and fix them to their colonies, which usually take on the shape of mounds, or mats, or cones, or sometimes branched structures. The cool thing about capturing mineral grains is that gives us a more accurate picture of what was eroding in the area at the time. The more important thing about them is they are stunningly pervasive. They constitute the oldest known direct fossil evidence of life on earth. Yet they still exist today. When water takes on the right qualities, stromatolites grow. Slowly. I think the Shark Bay ones grow 1mm/yr or something minescule like that. The arguably most important feature though, is they were the organisms most responsible for the Great Oxygenation Event that opened the door to the Cambrian explosion! The reason for BIF's is primarily stromatolite work. Our oceans went from a limey green and rusty orange to the crystal blue they are now as the stromatolites deprived the dissolved iron of it's oxygen and precipitated it in vast layers of rich iron ore on the sea beds. Hahaha, sorry, that's as short as I could go! Let me know if you want more info! Oh, and the reason I am so fixated on them is the fact that I find the oldest ones in Canada right by my house. 2.8 billion years old. I trained my eye to see them where I get them, and now everything that looks even close I think "STROMATOLITE!" LoL!

Wow, what a great day of beautiful collections. You live in such a beautiful area. Corpse! You never said what is was dude. Some poor animal? I had a dog who would roll in anything dead he saw. The short answer is yes. We have the Billings South hills where we can find septarians and fossils, the Pryor Mountains for Agate & Jasper, and then we all have our secret little spots along the river where gravels are still exposed even during high water. How are you guys doing over there in WA?

Lots of porphyry there eh? Even some quartz porphyry. I've worked at a mine where the low-grade ore was in a quartz porphyry. Not to say they all are gold-bearing, but it might be worth doin a little crush&pan if you ever come across the outcrop.... Especially if there's any veins!

Now the total n00b inside of me is confused/ What do you mean by "outcrop"? What would that look like exactly? And what do you mean by crush and pan? I have so much to learn.

@@AgateAngler Haha no worries man! No one learns it all overnight! Outcrop just means where the rock "crops out", or is exposed as bedrock. Usually if you see rocks and think "that's too big to be loose", it's probably bedrock, so also "outcrop". You can be fooled by what's called "float" in areas where glaciers have dropped huge masses of rock into sandy soil and they've sunk some. They can be as big as a house. But if you clink em with your hammer near the ground, eventually you can tell the difference in the feel in the hammer and the feel in your feet if it's float or true bedrock. Crush and pan just means to grab a few representative samples (in porphyry it's important to get areas that are both mostly phenocryst and others that are mostly groundmass, and every variety you see for several feet on either side of a vein), crush em up as best you can and use a gold pan to look for any traces of gold. Anything that looks even a bit promising, send half the sample you took (because you divided all the samples you were labelling as you took in half, to crush half and assay half), send it to the lab. Hahaha, the funny thing is, I sit here and I couldn't even ballpark how much an assay costs. I've always just been the guy filling the bags, never the one paying to process them! Or for diamonds, I've only been the guy processing them, never billing! LOL! Too funny!

@@thirstfast1025 I think that if he stays in this area outcrops would be a rarity. Now, if he heads west where most all of this material originated he may find an outcrop or ten. Maybe look near some of the lacoliths that Montana is so famous for.

@@thirstfast1025 That's really interesting info. I know that people do prospect on the Yellowstone, but it's not very well known for producing lots of gold. I was planning to try it out at some point. I'll certainly keep my eyes open, but I'd imagine that it all comes from the mountains.....
