I'm new to rockhounding and I live in Sonoma County. I've been out to Wright's Beach on the Sonoma Coast between Bodega Bay and Goat Rock Beach twice recently, camping in the campground there's. In the creekbed on the beach I found lots of serpentine rocks of small and larger size. Also some Jasper and maybe moss agate. I'm a newbie so I don't know that much. What I read about serpentine amazed me. Of course I knew it was California's State Rock, but I didn't know that it can sequester carbon and it is a reason for the rare and abundant plant life in much of California And that it's an earth healing stone that crystal ascension types use for healing the earth, many other properties, changing negativity to positivity, healing the heart chakra, opening the crown chakra and remembering past lives, protection against the Evil Eye in your environment. Jk I mean protection against negative energies and people. Calming, able to assist in your dreams of prosperity, or happiness, love, etc. If course I don't know how much of that is true! I'm open to it! Anyway, this may sound strange but I've been sleeping with a decent sized stone against my body and it seems to help me sleep and I'm more positive when I wake up. Maybe the placebo effect but I don't think so. I'd really like to know if there's a way to carve serpentine with handheld tools and not machinery which I obviously don't have at least not yet. And what kind of polish do you use to get it to shine? I put coconut oil, it looked good for a minute then it dries and all these white I guess inclusions are spotted over it, and the green is dull.

@@glendabarton45barton48 yes files with water, sand paper wet kind is best, don't breath the dust its worse than some and all dust should avoid when you can, serpentines and the whole family are very workable, especially if your just free forming, ten minutes sanding by hand with several finer grits will give you fun results, and mineral oil is my best but ive used all kinds in the field to wet the stones.

I watched a video from andrew (the rogue rockhound) yesterday, where he found a rock that was bowenite, here at a beach in oregon! I wasnt expecting that! Im glad you found another rock. It is so beautiful. This new rock is so awesome. The lack of large inclusions really reminds me of Jade. It is an amazing, beautiful material! What a nice find in our land of serpentine! I do the same thing. lol. I start out kayak fishing on some of the lakes I go to. No bites? Time to prospect. It's amazing how many areas have quartz crystals sitting on the bank. I always try to act calm and not draw attention! lol. But I'm exploding with joy inside!

Beautiful, yes, slab that stone. You forced me to research it a bit and the name "Jade" is widely used for many varieties. American Jade from California is Vesuvianite and Bowenite is a variety of Serpentine. Fascinating read, I could be misrepresenting it too, so please correct me if I am wrong. I believe it might fall under either Nephrite or Jadeite. Mohs is 6.5 to 7, very hard. I love it when I am forced to dig deeper on the items you are so good at finding, you have a good eye.

It's in all the rivers of the coastal rage that have serpentine mixes in the Gravels its there, for sure, you've seen it often and didn't know. Good luck! The entire putah creek watershed is loaded.

I live in southern Oregon I literally have collected hundreds and hundreds of pounds of Bowenite!! I’ve cut so much of that stuff I got bored with it lol I have slabs laying all over my yard funny! You can find it in the Smith River all the way down to the ocean. And if you’re really lucky you can find green aventurine

Recently subscribed. I'm a fellow Californian and the lack of fish in a stream was never a bad thing. I was gifted a small piece about the size a large person's fist. To be sure are your samples of this deep green with bright green veins? Also my sample seems to weigh much more than any other stone of the same size. Is this also a characteristic? When is someone going to build a little 10 inch saw powered by gas that we as Rock Hound’s can take into the field and test material? Then we wouldn’t have to haul back questionable stuff.

Use a mechanism like a treadled spinning wheel, no gas required, just some time.

If your portable saw runs out of gas before it's finished a 1" cut, then it's jade. Seriously, get a piece of unglazed porcelain. Rub the stone against it. If there is no streak, it might be jade. If there is a streak then it is not jade. Serpentine will leave a streak because it is softer than the porcelain. Jade is harder.

If you can break it, it isn't jade. Bowenite is a type of serpentine. It is not jade. Jade is harder and much tougher. A jade boulder the size of your green stone is virtually indestructible. No human can simply knock a chunk off with a hammer. In Big Sur there are green cliffs of serpentine that are emerald green and stunning to see. People come from all around to collect the serpentine, so they can show their friends the jade they have collected. I found a small sliver of jade there. It was as big around as a pencil and about 2.25" long. It was smooth and brown on the outside. It took over an hour for my diamond saw to cut it in half. Inside, it was jet black. I polished it into a cabachon. I have many pieces of jade; green and black nephrite from BC, almost clear jade from China, and white jade from Vermont, but I am not certain of that last one. Serpentine is an attractive stone, but it is not jade.

A hard carbon file wil make the stone ring, "tong!" is soft, "ting!!!" is hard, and extra hard rings the stone like a bell.
