With the sun going down and the water rising, I brought the bones home that evening, treating them with respect. After some research, I got convinced they might be human bones. So, I called the police and handed over the bones, showing them exactly where I found them. The police were cool with it and thanked me. In the future, if I find something like this, I'll call the police right away. But that day, because of the risky place, rising water, and not being sure if they were human bones, I decided to take them home. Like I said, the police were okay with it and thanked me for helping.)

God, the comments in here talking about "disturbing a crime scene" and calling you out for collecting the bones. Y'all need to step away from the internet for a bit. 1) The area was going to be submerged in water soon and he didn't want the bones to get washed away before he had a chance to verify if they were human or not. 2) "You should have taken pictures!" HE FILMED IT. You realized you just watched footage that he took of the entire crime scene prior to the moving/removal of any bones, right? The evidence of the scene has been preserved. He even tells the police this directly, offers to give them the footage, and they thank him for it. He did everything the way he should have. It's fine. If he had messed up, the police would have told him so, but they thanked him for everything he did. You guys really need to stop looking for a reason to hate on someone who's done nothing but good throughout his entire career.

I was a death investigator in Jacksonville in 1999. We had a human male torso found in a dumpster by a gas station along I-95. No skull or limbs. You may want to pass this info on.

For future reference- if you ever suspect you've found human remains, please leave everything where you've found it and call the police immediately. Although you have opened this case, which may lead to someones missing loved one being located- you have compromised the crime scene, and it will make it very hard for investigators to validate any evidence they find from here on. i.e any marks found on the bones could've been inflicted by your team, meaning they cannot conclude anything they find on them as the cause of death Hope this helps!

Advice from an anthropology prof: when you find a piece of human skeleton, STOP LOOKING FOR MORE!!! Call law enforcement immediately! Poking around in piles of rocks and stuff is potentially interfering with a crime scene. You really didn't want to remove those remains from the scene. The marks on the bones looked a lot like rodent gnaw marks to me, but they were also packed with dirt so it was really hard to tell. They likely processed the scene where you recovered the material as a recovery site. They'll try to put everything back together as best they can.

No hates, you guys is greats! This was really shocking to watch…please please do not encourage anyone ever moving suspected human remains if found. You essentially conducted your own forensic investigation before calling it in. If there was any amount of flesh attached to the bones and you removed them from the initial setting they were found, took them home for a quick CSI superfan roleplay, then delivered them to the cops on a cafeteria tray…that’s a whole entire crime. No matter how respectfully you handled them. I don’t understand how this is any different. Curiosity is normal. It’s why we’re all here! And you guys are awesome at what you do. I’m just surprised and disappointed by the lack of awareness here.

Went hunting a few years back and stumbled across some human bones. It turns out a dude went hunting in like 90s and never returned and that was him. They think he got stuck in the mud with his waders and wasn't able to get out. I find a bunch of weird things hunting like clothes or someone's gun and I'm certain its all hunters who got stuck and ditched what they could just to get out

It amazes me every time I watch their videos, and they can pick up a single piece of bone and know exactly what animal from what period and where it's located on the animal! When I would look at the same bone and think it would be a perfect skipping stone! 😅😅😅

Hey Jake! As a Kathy Reichs reader, here are my totally ignorant comments: 1. The recovery site shold be preserved, but the water was rising and I guess you did the right thing. I hope a forensic anthropologist has a look at it with low tide, to check stratigraphy, fabric etc. 2. Don't want to be morbid, but the state of the skull piece and the small fragments made me suspect the body was exposed to fire. The lack of hand and feet bones and of the ribs seems to corroborate this. However in that case the vertebrae should be recognizable, so I tend to agree that it could be a dismembered body. Anyway you handled it with respect, IMO. I hope you keep us posted on this sad case. And Jake, it's great to see you out and about again after the Titan scare! I hope you and Kendall are doing well

Think placing a marker for investigators to find is better than disturbing evidence that might float freely now that the heavier bones are removed. Think they want to use a suction system to go through later for microscopic, fragile materials.

it's a very good thing you filmed yourselves finding those remains. if it turns out to be a dumped body, any footage you got could be used to figure out exactly where things were before you disturbed them. hopefully it isn't anything so morbid, but you've at least done your due diligence in ensuring all information is available to the authorities

Hey guys, just a word of advice, you can take or leave. next time you find a human set of bones. you are working on a crime scene. every thing you move can hinder anything the police may be able to do.

As long as the scene was documented by photos and video before things were moved its all good. Likely these underwater videos were better quality then a police diver could get. Law enforcement is not really equipped with good underwater cameras.

@@spongebobsqueeze Uhm no... Let's say for example a tiny microscopic piece of DNA trapped against the bone by mud has survived for the entire time the bones were stuck in the mud. Along comes a You Tuber who wants to film a more clear shot so he first handles the evidence and then washes it, thus destroying any trace DNA that may have survived. Or there are tiny bullet fragments that are still in the mud surrounding the bones (tissues rotted away but metal fragments survived trapped in the mud surrounding the bones), all now washed downstream or down his sink at home. Finally, any possible evidence that is found is now attackable in court, defense lawyers will say the kid put it there during his zealous/excessive handling of the evidence and not some criminal. Destroying the integrity of a crime scene can completely collapse the ability to solve a case, so no it is not "all good".

@@arcamemnon9193 That sounds like a great scenario if it were possible for body parts or clothing to have been in the moving water so long there was nothing left but bones to have trapped DNA… but it is not. Your really reaching in this instance. If the choice is bring the bones you think are human or possibly be unable to locate them again, I would bring them. It is not like the police will spend time and continue looking for them if you claim to have found some you think were human and cant find them again. Unless it is a suspected crime scene related to a known crime in the area They will just give a heavy sigh, roll their eyes and think you are an idiot.

@@spongebobsqueeze Heh, being retired law enforcement I doubt I'd be castigated as you say but hey you've also got decades of experience to draw upon correct? The bones were in the mud and close together so chances are they lay where they fell and never washed away as many say here. Bodies do not degrade before sinking to the bottom in water. There is a period where gasses keep the body afloat, but eventually they sink to the bottom long before the flesh is gone. Sediments in the water column will then slowly build up around the body and eventually cover it in mud. All this occurs as the body deteriorates, but cool water temperatures slows the decomp process considerably. So yes there is a good chance DNA or other evidence can be trapped in the mud surrounding the bones, unless of course you wash it all away upon recovery.

I know you guys do this a lot, but you really need to not move things like that when you find them on land. That area becomes a crime scene and it needs to be as undisturbed as possible. Things you find in the water is already as disturbed as it gets but if stuff is spread around on land you should really not move it and definitely shouldn’t touch it with bare hands. You don’t need to collect everything for the police. If you see something like that call the police right away, crime scene investigators and forensic scientists will do that. (Even if they might be animal bones. Police will still be interested and come to check out the possible exciting situation.) now the fact that your friends are paleontologists definitely helps you not get in trouble for cleaning them, but it won’t help forensic scientists.

Please take a second to understand he is not a cop, or a detective there really is no way of telling if a bone is human or animal without being experienced in Human anatomy and physiology. I also want to clarify that this could have been a murder that happened decades ago or a simple drowning accident as tragic as it is the body had fully decomposed meaning this John or Jane doe probably had not died recently and was related back to a "Cold case", you also have to take into account that dead bodies are usually stored in a Morge that is keeps them from decomposing. (Below 90° F (32° C), the process of decomposition slows considerably) Also, the average river temperature is around 5-25c which means the body if it had been held to the bottom of the river where it's the coldest could have taken a few weeks or maybe a week to decompose (Please note I'm not taking into count wildlife such as fish that could possibly have sped up that process.) So, taking to note that DALLMYD had no clue he was about to find a possible crime scene. NOTE: this crime scene was already extremely destroyed by natural elements and eroded. Instead of blaming the destruction of the crime scene fully on DALLMYD take a moment to understand that the natural elements had already eaten away at the crime scene and instead be thankful for them because if they had just dismissed the bones instead of trying to find a bone that could be human this John/Jane doe they would have forever been unnoticed and forgotten also a high chance that rising water would wash away the bones. Yes, they should have called the cops after finding part of the human skull. however instead of shaming them for taking action and possibly providing closure for a family we should acknowledge the good they did. everyone makes mistakes but it's not right that you should criticize them for it so harshly for "destroying" something that had already been destroyed. also, majority of commenters don't even realize that the police and coroner aren't really bothered by the fact that they moved the boned and saw either. Also, big fan of this coroner explaining how to professionally separate evidence. If you're referring to the lady in the police section, she didn't sound upset at all. It was more than likely a mix of adrenaline and a whole sort of emotions rushing through. I didn't hear her yell at them, she was stating that because nobody in that situation is a true trained medical professional they can't positively say it's human and that's why they were calling the coroner to tell them if it was indeed human.

Those are 100% human bones (I went to school for forensic anthropology). Those marks may not be kerf marks, but the brief glance I had... they may be chew marks from the teeth of rodents...

Those jars were possibly witch bottles or another ceremonial offering. Most jars like this are stuffed with herbs and other offerings, and sometimes slips of paper with prayers, spells, curses, etc written on them. It's considered bad luck to tamper with/open them so...do with that info what you will! I hope the case of the human remains is solved and the family gets some closure!

Props to you guys for doing all this but maybe wear gloves if you encounter bones again. It might be easier to identify the body without your fingerprints or dna on it. Although you had gloves on at the end, I still wouldn’t of touched anything without them. I’m not a professional in any way but just a thought.

You know, if we cleaned up ALL the rivers the steel mills will be back in business. We've got to start somewhere. I began to magnet hunt for fishooks, ON and off the pier. and would finds hundreds over a weekend. Kids wade in there, you know....I might start doing that again now!
