As an aviation refueller, who has also worked in bulk fuel storage facilities... You've got to keep on top of water in fuel. No questions about it. Water has air in it. Microbiological growth, aka algae, will breath is air, feed off the fuel, and it will breed. So you end up with a layer of water on the bottom, a layer of growth in the middle, and your fuel ontop. Condensation in the tank heating up during the day, and cooling down at night, will suck in air, through the tank vent(s). This air heats up during the day, forms moisture on the walls of the tank, and it slides down into your fuel, sinking to the bottom. A tank full of fuel will suffer less because there's a smaller air pocket. Think long term storage of your gear :) Regularly "strip" or drain a sample from your tank, drain your fuel water traps*. Water is HEAVIER than Diesel, Petrol etc etc. Water sits on the bottom of your tank. Also.... If microbiological growth is happening in your yard's fuel pod / fuel tank stand etc etc.... it can transfer over into your machines when you refuel. So you've now got a growth problem in your dozer or truck which you won't notice until it's too late. If you're fuel stinks, has an organic "off smell" to it - you have microbiological growth, or the start of it. A quick test, get a clean glass jar, pour some fuel from your source, give it a swirl, look through the side of the glass - you can see "particulate" swirling around if it's contaminated. If it's from a tank, machine, or delivery vehicle - get this from the low point drain or sample point. You want this sample to come from the very bottom of the fuel container. I comment in length because as a rookie operator, 2 years now, no one drains their fuel supply regularly to check for quality. No one takes a mason jar, or glass jar, sample of fuel from the fuel delivery guy to see if he's pumping your storage tank full of contaminated fuel. *By drain your tank - all your storage tanks should ideally have a low point drain on them, at the lowest point of the fuel holding compartment. When you drain a tank, you want to allow at least 1 or 2 buckets of fuel to come out, this will cause a suction effect in your tank, sucking all the heavy items (water, debris etc) to strip off the bottom of your tank (it creates a tornado like swirl). Check the fuel in the bucket... is it like milk? If it's milky that is the start of growth occuring. Water will form a layer on the bottom of the bucket as globs or even form a full layer under the fuel. Drain until the fuel is clean. In Tropical areas - you'll be draining regularly, at least once a week. When I was operating an aviation fuel farm / fuel storage i was regularly draining over 500 L of fuel every day across all my storage tanks, pipes, low point drains etc in the tropics (so weather similar to Florida) Ok, that's my 2 cents... i had to give it my all... this is my manifesto...i wasted 10 years in the military for this moment 🤣🤣🤣

The company I worked for we had a rental fleet of Kubota mini excavators. It was constant fuel issues from customers. I had a 12 volt pump with a long suction tube I pumped many 5 gallon pails of schmoo out of fuel tanks. Customer calls we put regular gas in the machine it quit running. Get out there they've put damn near 40 litres of gas in the machine. Flush out the lines change filters pump out the tank. That one machine plagued me for for well over a year constantly changing out fuel filters. The other machines it was gas can itis. Water in fuel, bugs in the fuel, clogged fuel lines. On the 690ELC we had it had buggy fuel sh*tty John Deere filters that were a bitch to change. The ZX200 fuel cap lock, water would leak through turned the fuel filters into greasy snot. I always kept our tidy tanks fuel filters changed regularly on the fillrite pumps.

I bought a $26000 ambulance, with a "junk" 6.0 in it, for $2000 It had no cap on it. Turns out it wasn't head gaskets. Wasn't a blown EGR. It was water in the diesel.

One of the operators left the fuel cap off of a Cat 374f at the landfill I wrench at, then proceeded to run it for two days, despite the water in fuel warnings popping up on the cab display. How we didn't break anything is beyond me.

@Nunya Business not sure we're ur at but operators here make easily 6 figures we are close to that as well if u actually have experience and know what your doing not an excuse to neglect or mess up extremely expensive equipment you either own or are intrusted to run if people don't like there compensation find another job either they aren't good at there job or work for a small company I think people closing caps checking fluids isn't a difficult job its called being lazy

@@hawkins8765 I get the sense you either A. Don’t do excavation/construction as a profession or B. You’re pretty young. If you’ve been around in the trades it doesn’t take long to understand people are just shit bags sometimes. There isn’t very many people who actually give a fuck and want to be there. Most of the guys know there’s a higher paying job around the corner. I was about 29-30 when it finally came to me. There will never be a perfect crew where everyone is mentally present and care about the job they’re doing. You’d think they will just move on. Some of them are perfectly happy doing a half ass job and staying because they know they probably won’t get fired because it’s hard to get anyone to want to do some of this shit now days.

They probably forgot to put the fuel cap back on, left it open over night in the rain. I've seen it happen a few times down on the ports lol. The worst is when they leave the fill hatch open in the rain on the fuel truck. Nothing but the best HDs working at the ports hahaha

Had a terex power screen with a no start the other day. Cat/Perkins engine Filters were obviously trashed, past the water seperator we found a chunk of latex glove in the fuel filter. Turns out they crew running it lost the fuel cap a while ago and used a latex glove as a cap. Found the rest of the glove jammed into the inlet of the fuel/water seperator preventing the machine from priming

Today I worked on a pc360 komatsu. Diesel tank had crazy amount of water in it. Drained from sediment clean out drain. Then a rotary broom with a fuel leak easy fix replaced a weep hole plug on injection pump. Then finished with a DT 466 with no oil pressure. Turned out a piece of shmoo was blocking the sensor. Easy fix’s all around. But it’s the easy jobs that make up for the difficult ones.

Run in this problem a few weeks ago with my D-39EX-23 mind had trash in the tank stopping up the fuel line. Now it's sucking air somewhere between the tank and fuel filter primer. I have to prime it every time to start it now. Many ideas?

Is the primer bad unhook line from tank to primer blow air in tank an see if you get fuel flowing then try an crack lines at injection pump an start it see you get any fuel

Check for debris in the primer if you had it in the tank, could be holding it open letting it bleed away prime.

Buddy my truck has an open hole just down to the tank. Every truck I’ve owned was like that. I been running equipment for 15 years and if I can pull that screen out I will. Just got to remember to put it back 😂 It will stop the auto handles and it’s nice to see in the tank. I know it’s playing with fire kind of but my truck is open to the bottom so what. I’m a big fan of using the little chain to the cap though! I’ve ran a bunch of equipment guys have forgot to put the cap back on. The one time this happened to us we changed filters and drained the water out of the bottom of the tank until it looked like mainly diesel 😂. Ran fine. The field mechanics where I live are basically sensor changers now. That and they swap a lot of dpf coolers.

So... What do you recommend when someone put about a gallon of hydraulic into the fuel tank before noticing?
@chris6200

Depends on the size of the fuel tank. A little bit of hydraulic in a lot of diesel is not going to upset a diesel.
