I discovered this original trilogy back when I was a teenager myself, back in the mid 1970's, loved it then and on many rereadings since then. Much more recently my (then) 14 year old read it for the first time and enjoyed it about as much as I did. It was real hard biting my tongue not sharing any spoilers until he got to the points where things were revealed and at last we could share our surprise at how well the surprises were kept from us despite some real clues along the way.

Ah yes, the review I was looking for! Asimov was truly a visionary, a great writer, scientist, historian. Glad you read it and loved it! I just recently read it and the plot twists in this and the following novels just blew my mind! There’s a new Apple TV series now, but I haven’t really checked it out, I heard they change many things in the plot.

This sounds like an amazing story to me. I don't care if it has action or not. I know I tried to read this book when I was a junior high schooler and it went completely over my head. I'm hoping if I were to try to read this book now I would definitely understand it. Not only understand it but enjoy it.

Most brilliant thing it does (and influenced) is imagining people far into our future, talking about their future.

Foundation was written in early 40's and published in short stories. It was published as complete books early 50's. I think Tolkien has way more influence overall if you compare Fantasy as a genre to SF taking into account every media, especially video games and books.

I started reading Asimov last year. The newest set of covers for the "Robot" and "Foundation" series is a big reason why.

Asimov's "Galactic Empire" books are worth reading as well. They occur in the same universe as his robot and foundation universe.

Awesome review! I tend to like action in my reading but I have this book kicking around and will give it a chance. You're lucky you got your hands on these back when they had the Whelan covers. I got the 2004 re-issue of the paperback and, to be delicate about it, the cover is absolute garbage. I am so goddamn frustrated with amazing classic covers being replaced by bland trash and the copy of Foundation I got is a good example of that. The Whelan cover is amazing, both in the art and the title layout. Don't even get me started on the new WoT or Mistborn paperback covers, *puke*

It was actually 1941, cause the stories were published in "Astounding Science Fiction" magazines first. But the aeries are really the best author's work, IMHO.

One of Asimov´s novels I have and will allways love. But it is NOT the true grandfather of ALL Space Adventures. " THERE IS MUCH MORE UNDER THE SUN AS YOUR WISE OLD EYES CAN SEE " can´t remember from what play the quote is but it fits here :) You really should digg deeper than Asimov. To Asimov himself. The book by Edward Gibbon ( 1734-1794 ) THE HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE was tha main inspriation to writing the FOUNDATION TRIOLOGY. To all those totaly desinterested in the subject History. THIS presentation of the Roman Age is really a mile stone in scientific writing. It was followed by tthe major works of other historians like the German THEODOR MOMMSEN ( famous quote " AND THE GERMANS HAD LEARND THEIR LANGUAGE ON A ROMAN EXERCISE FIELD - indeed many German verbs relate the the ones in the Latin Command Form ) Funny thing that Asimov´´s marvelous and exellent classic had almost the same inpact on Literature as Gibbon´s work in Science. So many authors between the Fifties and the Sixties went on th do the same. Here in Germany the PERRY RHODAN -Adventures are a perfect examples for this. Week for Week since October 1961 the adventures of Perry Rhodan and his friends are comming out; starting with finding a crashed space ship from Arkon on the Moon and having let so far to Multi Universe adventures through space and time. So far Earth had started out as THE SOLAR EMPIRE after unification and is now in a mulit cultural coalition with many species spanning through several galaxies. Me, I got into it even before birth if the theory is right that an embryo is influenced by what the becomming mother does. And my grandfather and mother were also big fans of this series. ( I was born in December 1961 by the way and nowdays I still collect those adventures ) Same with the original authors. So far the third of fourth generation of authors, partly even recruted from the fan base is writing on the Perry Rhodan Series. And this all because an ongoing Student and later Professor for Bio-Chemistry decided to follow his hunch that a Science Fiction Version of Gobbons´s book would be a good idea ::::) I think Asimov had made a very big impression with his great book. 4:28 WOULD I RECOMMAND IT TO TEENAGERS `? Depending on the interests. I know many of my friends and relatives comming from the PERRY RHODAN direction almost " digesting " it because they loved it so much already as youngsters still going to Highschool ( Gymnasium, Realschule in this neck of the woods ) But for a general audience not so deep into Science Fiction you are right of course. 6:12 But THE Foundation work. A bit overdrawn, I say. TECHNISCH-UTOPISCHE ROMANE or Science Fiction even started long before Asimov with Jules Verne, Hans Dominik, in a way Edgar Allan Poe, Hugo Gernsback as an author himself ( originally Hugo Gernsbach ) or even the Asronomer Keppler with his TRAVEL TO THE MOON story. So here I disagree with you. But I can understand you since every fan has his personal ZERO POINT as HEIKO LANGHANS had written in his German study about the FANDOM PHENOMENA.

16_06 HOW CAN YOU SAY SUCH A HORRIBLE THING !! The SHORT STORIES are Asimov´s best work They are great reading. If you don´t like them please don´t generalize it for everyone. Contray to you I recommand to everyone to read them . They also had a world wide impact on many authors. like WIHELM/WILLIAM/WIVO VOLTZ one of the main authors of Perry Rhodan in the Seventies. the thing with the name comes from the variations in Pen Names he had used among others

Asimov was born in 1920 so he was 31 in 1951. Tolkien is far more influential to the fantasy genre than the Foundation Trilogy is.
