I've said it before... you really are giving me confidence to take on our own foundation with our next build. We subbed out the foundation on our first shipping container build, we're on a hillside too, so it totally intimidated me. Thank you for sharing!!!

I have to echo the sentiment. I've had so many container ideas floating in my head, but creating a solid foundation like this has kept them on the back burner. I'm currently binge watching this build and they are really inspiring and reinvigorating my desire.

I'm not trying to through shade on what these guys are doing because it's quite impressive. But, I know how much $$ that foundation has to be and yet the containers are pretty rusty. In one of the videos, they show a shot from beneath and you can see light peering through many of the structural supports. That's through-rust and it is fairly extensive. I'm building with containers right now in 2021 and I can get well used 40ft High Cubes for $3200 and I can get "One trip" 40ft High Cubes, which are basically new, for $5500 (both include delivery). I'm personally using some crusty containers for a shop project, but if I were making a complex house, as these guys are doing, I'd be using the one trip units. I mention this to help others at least consider which grade of container to choose, based on its usage.

We haven’t had a chance to refurbish the exterior of the 1st level yet, but we’ve refurbished every other container. You can see how we managed the rust in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKqnY4qNnNCfb6s We don’t have any areas of the house where the rust has eaten through the structure, and if we did we would patch it up. What video are you talking about? With that being said, I agree that buying new saves a lot of time on refurbishment so if it’s in the budget I’d recommend going that route.

Hi, I live in SW Washington, and understand things in your build. Somehow I missed this video, and forgive me but I have a couple of questions for you. Living here in the northwest we live in a volcanic area (I live about 20 air miles SW from Mt St Helens), and along the fault plate underground. May I ask why you decided on the pillars as you did? I would think under certain conditions, wouldn't it have been more stable to use two re-bared foundation walls? My other question is not really as serious, but I would have left the Sonotudes in place rather than messing with removing them. Is there a reason you wanted them off? I'm getting ready to start a project like yours this spring. I have many options and haven't really decided on one yet.
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch Жыл бұрын
The reason we did the concrete piers was mainly because of cost, and it's also much easier to set up sonotubes than setting up concrete forms. There is rebar in all the concrete piers. Also, we removed the sonotube covers for aesthetics. Hope that helps! :)
@TheDukie54
@TheDukie54 Жыл бұрын
@@PacificPinesRanch Thank you for kindly responding. I know you guys are busy. The reason I ask about the pillars, is I wonder how stable they would be during an earthquake. The pillars might remain intact, but I would worry about the containers swaying on them, as opposed to being more stable on a wall foundation. As I mentioned my place is up by Mt St Helens, and while we were spared from the devastation during her 1980 eruptions, we did experience tremors during the first major eruptions. I am also someone who lived on Elmendorf Air Force Base, in Anchorage Alaska in the late 50's and early 60's, as well as have/had family who experienced damage from the 1964 earthquake. It's hard to un-forget those past experiences. I have always been a prepper and gun shy with somethings. Thank you for kind and timely reply, I look forward to watching as your build continues, and seeing your end result.

I'm the process of building a 16'x32' home 8 feet off the ground on piers. How can I determine the concrete pears, I beams or metal pipes to support weight. I have seen lots of stuff on KZbin like a 40' container lifted 10 ft with 4 pipes around 12" in diameter.
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch 4 жыл бұрын
Jorge Serna You’d have to calculate the live/dead loads of the house and find what size piers can support it. Also you would have to see if the soil you’re building on can support the piers & the depth you’ll need to reach to set them up. I’d highly recommend talking with an engineer if you’re wanting to put the house 8’ off the ground.

Can you provide more for details of the steel plates that were placed on top of the sonotubes. Were they wet set after the concrete was poured or did you place them in before? Did you weld the shipping container corner castings on these plate? What are the dimensions and thickness of the plates? How did you make the plate assembly? What was the most challenging part of making and setting these plates in place?
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch 3 жыл бұрын
We set them the same time we poured the concrete. The plates are either 1/2” or 3/4” thick and they have various sizes based on where they are being placed. Also they have an anchoring system that anchor them into the concrete. You can use a J bolt or threaded rod with a nut/washer, etc and weld them to the plates. They were pretty easy to make. Hardest part was setting them because we needed to be extremely precise in their placement.

Pacific Pines Ranch may I ask how much the foundation cost in total? I am currently doing a shipping container home and unfortunately there was a misunderstanding. My architect made my footings out of steel, and a steel frame. Meaning a lot of welding needs to take place. Unlike you I’m only doing one 45 ft shipping Container home. However it is hanging off a hillside, therefore 2-4 Pillars will need to be much taller than the back pillars, so 20 feet will be off the hillside. For the steel legs and frame they want 46k way to much in my opinion.
