An Indian enthusiast speaking here. To clear things out, presently the original nibs in India are manufactured by 4 different companies to the best of my knowledge. Kanwrite is the most well known (they manufacture Noodlers and FPR nibs, if they feel different, that is because of tuning), Magna Carta, Ambitious and Acriv. The first and the last ones manufacture titanium nibs as well in addition to the steel. I have one from Kanwrite and it writes beautifully. Ranga recently offered one model with a #8 ambitious nib. A number of people are fond of them, so I guess they are not bad. The one I own is #6 size and I found it to be very plain, almost characterless. Most Indian manufacturers use Kanwrite nibs as standards (other than the three Germans) whether they admit or not.

I am an enthusiast of Indian pens, so I thank you very much for all that information. I’ll be looking out for these other nibs that I’ve never heard of.

Dear Vincenzo, thank you very much for this comprehensive overview which I really enjoy. I am deeply impressed by the number of "nibs" in your collection and can't wait for your review of the Pilot Custom Urushi, which I have ordered as well. However you missed a couple of important players: - Italian nibs: Montegrappa, Visconti - Japanese nibs: Platinum - German nibs: Graf von Faber Castell makes wonderfull nibs as well as Otto Hutt. Waldman is using modified Bock nibs. And not at least there is a gold nib from LAMY that fits on the Safari, etc. and is a joy to write with. I am looking for the grande finale in Chapter 5. Kind regards and many thanks for all your effort Dirk

Thanks Vincenzo, I enjoyed the video. I am a fan of "soft" or "bouncy" nibs, but not flex nibs. Of the pens that I have, my "bounciest" nib has to be the medium nib in my Pilot Custom 74. This wold be followed by the Soft Fine-Medium nib I'm my Pilot Custom 743. Also my Asvine medium nibs have a nice little bit of bounce to them.

PSS we both love stubs. That could be a cool 7th set. I keep hoping that more makers will make stubs, especially like the Nemosine 0.6 or 0.8 stubs. They are still some of my favorite steel nibs. Thanks again for taking a deep dive on nibs. I’m looking forward to the episode with your nibgrinder as I think grinds definitely take it to the next level, but realize that it can be a bit intimidating.

Interesting episode on one of my favorite topics - nibs. Amazing collection, but I would suggest you try some Platinums. The #3776 is a great nib, but even the cheap steel Prefountaine is a winner. Like other Japanese makers, they make their own nibs and have quality with reliable assurances. Pilot also has some cool nibs you might want to try. I like Japanese nibs since I like a more fine or European EF nibs. Goulet recently shared that that he sold more F nibs than anything else. You tend to go for juicy nib/ feeds, but I often find that many nib/ feeds are too wet for me. That goes back to the usual disclaimer that it all depends on your taste / style. I seem to like the feedback from some Japanese pens. In any case thanks much for your very thorough your nib explorations. Happy writing and FP therapy. Aloha. 🖋️

Hello Vincenzo! I enjoyed very much the series. I think your choice was very much to point, mostly when making a difference between "flex soft" and "soft soft" nibs. Very interesting & a joy to spend another 2 hours in your company. Thank you very much.

Hello Vincenzo, good to see this fascinating serie continues with more of your personal tastes. As a side note for Pilot Custom Urushi I really recommend Penultimate Dave's December 16th currently inked video. He mentions and shows sections custom made by Mike Green for JD Big Metal Pen that you also reviewed. This custom made ebonite section accepts number 8 Jinhao nib and 9019 converter. I'm currently in talk with Mike to order some for my pens, I know it cannot replace the original but as you can see on the video, I believe it enhances the existing pen tremendously.

I watched that video. I didn’t realize that Mike Green had actually developed those feeds. I did show in one of my recaps, a modification of an existing feed and how I adopted mike greens approach to fit in a number eight. I have to touch base with Mike and get to the bottom of it.

I am absolutely delighted with this entire nib series because it offers a, certainly subjective, but nevertheless broad-based summary of nibs. A guide for those who like to get some more input before buying something. It was also interesting for me to see where our assessments coincide and where our preferences differ. And the work load you had to master speaks for itself. You may also try the Kanwrite Titanium nibs, available in Jowo or Bock threaded housing. The Ultraflex nibs come with an ebonite feed, the Flex series is equipped with a feeder, sporting an extended ink channel for flex needs. I call them enhanced plastic feed. A fantastic alternative for little money. The only downsize is the housing, a very hard clear plastic material, not suitable for disassembling and re-assembling the unit as the housing tends to crack easily (as I had to find out). I suspect the housings are made in India, not produced by Jowo or Bock and are necessary because they have a larger internal diameter to accommodate the slightly bigger Kanwrite feed plus the Titanium nib.

I got to say, this is turning into a wonderful comprehensive compendium of pens and nibs, which I am becoming fond of. While watching these series of videos I have connected many dots and I had more than a few 'light-bulb' moments, while you've compared nibs side by side - no small feat and a very rare thing to see! I usually write with EF/F, but thanks to today's video I think my next pen will be a juicy Broad, just to explore the experience of this kind of writing :) Stay well my friend! Very much looking forward to see part 5 of these excellent series.

This video was incredible. What do you think is your smoothest soft/flex nib? I'm pretty new to the hobby but in my limited experience I have found most of the flex nibs I have tried to be really scratchy.
@StephaneDesnault7 күн бұрын
Hi Vincenzo, you should try the Namikis - I realize they probably come out of the same factories as the Pilots, but the tuning certainly feels different - they're the smoothest nibs in my collection. The ones I have are the mid-range Yukaris, so definitely not Emperor-size.

I think my favorite Italian nibs are the Aurora nibs. (Yes, expensive, too.) A unique feedback. Japanese nibs: I'll go for 2: The 743 (or the 912) Waverly or maybe the Sailor King or Pen nibs. Yes, the pilot FA is also great. Wettest? The Magna Carta Mag 600 and the Schon DSGN Monoc nib. Interesting video. Thanks.
