There is definitely an audience for your videos on CDs. I myself used to have a turntable but then, due to space, had to convert my music to digital files. Now I listen to CDs and music files, hi-res music files whenever possible. Your channel is valuable to anyone who loves music, period, one of the reasons being much of the music you talk about is also available on CD. Therefore, more videos on CDs would be welcome, no doubt. Love how you talked about Red Clay. It's a masterpiece. If you haven't heard Milt Jackson's album Little Sunflower, also on the CTI label, you should because it's a special album. The entire album is good but the highlight is their rendition of the Hubbard classic Little Sunflower. Great stuff.

I don't own a CD Player or a turntable anymore but I download many of the albums you recommend and have been discovering so much music that somehow has escaped me over my 62 years. You are a fount of knowledge and the impressive vinyl lining the walls gives you an air unquestionable authority. Thank you for what you are doing. You are doing a real service for jazz lovers. All of these except for "Giants of Jazz in Berlin '71" are available on Apple Music. The Giants of Jazz only has a few of the tracks available in the US.

Brother Kenny, since I have 1200 CD's and 650 or so albums, I have to give you some props for diving into this forgotten subject. You are spot on when you mention that there is some fantabulous music out there that is not widely seen on Vinyl as opposed to showing up on CD. Yes, CD's can sound a little compressed at times compared to vinyl, but for the most part, I'm going to drop that compact disc into my machine or carousel, and clean my dishes, my house, shower, watch some great KZbin videos. CD's will always have a place in my life, so will vinyl, but thanks for spreading the good word that compact disc's are here to stay! Just bought Red Clay and Giants of Jazz on the E Bay, lol. Thanks, as always for the great recommendations!

Grew up in Los Angeles (family had a relatively well know restaurant, "Ship's Coffee Shops") and went to the Manne-hole often enough to appreciate the venue. But my best memory of Shelly Manne, though, was following him around with Buddy Shenk, Ray Brown, and Laurindo Almeida in a band they named The L.A. Four.

There is a double album called “California Concert: the Hollywood Palladium,” on LP, that has most of the same artists with Freddie Hubbard - George Benson, Hubie Laws, Stanley Turrentine, Ron Carter, Airto…etc. In addition to Red Clay, they play Fire and Rain, Sugar, Blues West, and Leaving West. One of my all time favorite jazz LPs. My copy was destroyed in a flood, but I was able to find another copy at a used LP store…

In addition to Red Clay, Freddie Hubbard recorded another album with CTI and sort of the same players including George Benson titled Straight Life that IMHO is just as good. Thanks for sharing and keep it up.

Thanks for giving CDs some love! I still enjoy physical media and CDs are my primary way of listening to music. Digital technology has advanced to to the point that CDs sound pretty amazing these days, especially paired with a good DAC. Plus, since I'm on a budget, they are way more affordable than vinyl. For me it is still all about the music and not necessarily the format.

My Jazz experience is somewhat bittersweet. I've seen some truly great artist back when I was in college. I saw Freddy Hubbard (Wichita KS), Dizzy Gillaspie (Tulsa OK) and Count Basie (Lawton OK). I knew I should go and see them because they are great, but I was younger and was still learning to understand the music. To this day, I still struggle to understand some of it, Free Jazz for example, is hard for me. I never meant to be morbid, but when the artist is older, I made more effort to try and see them. I enjoy your videos and your take on this great music, no matter to format.

Kenny Definitely keep the jazz CD suggestions coming! I stopped buying vinyl around 1985, so I have a large collection. I subsequently started buying vinyl again and I enjoy both formats. Recent vinyl reissues have piqued my interest, but the cost is prohibitive. A good example if Sonny Rollins Way Out West. The CD version was very reasonable in cost, and I must say, they were very well mastered and the sound is outstanding! I also enjoy the older RVG CD reissues, such as Soultrane. Keep it up.

One of my all time favorite albums is Heavy Blue by the Larry Willis Quintet. At the time he was a member of the Jerry Gonzalez & the Fort Apache Band. All those albums are worth a listen. This album has most of the same personnel. Larry was a great piano player, very expressive. This album is some very cool jazz., Jerry on Trumpet and Joe Ford playing some very nice saxophone.

A couple of CDs that I don't often see mentioned that are incredible is the album by Shirley Horn called you won't forget me, she has some amazing guest artists like Branford marsalis and Miles Davis in an acoustic setting. Amazing performance and amazing recording all of her sessions on verve in the '90s were amazing.

I buy a lot more CDs over vinyl only because of the price. So, I enjoy the CD videos. The vinyl ones are great as well, so I can know what is out there in the fomat. I wish I was born in the first vinyl era, my era was Cassettes in the 80s and 90s with CD getting more popular eventually and vinyl no where to be seen in my area. Around 2014 I started to get into vinyl and haven't stopped since haha

I have Red Clay and looking forward to checking out your other picks. For phenomenal sound and music (on a cd) you might look for Olu Dara's, From Natchez to New York. Some jazz, some blues, vocals and a nice inclusion of Olu on coronet. Exceptional.

Kenny, thanks for giving some love to the CD collectors like myself. I watch videos for the music. I know I'll see some artists that I haven't heard of. I'm very interested in the Trainchia. I have never heard of her. I do have "Red Clay." It's a masterpiece. I haven't seen that Bill Evans CD before. I have some "Giants of Jazz" CDs. I don't believe I have that one. I just listened to the, Freddie Hubbard (Red Clay) album and the (Giants of Jazz 71). I like both, and the (Giants of Jazz) album probably suited my taste more. Hahaha, Freddie Hubbard kind of reminds me of Stanley Turrentine a bit. Actually, I never really hear album reviewers talk about Stanley Turrentine much, but I really like his version of (Sunny). I used to request it all the time on my community radio station.👍

Kenny: Great review. I've got all except Traincha and I will check her out. But I would add one you omitted. McCoy Tyner, "The Real McCoy" on Bluenote. Recorded at Van Gelder's front room studio. Everybody is on fire! With Tyner, Elvin, Ron, Henderson. And supremely well recorded. I have on both vinyl and CD. I don't think a SACD was ever produced.

Hello Kenny, Amazing find, especially since the name of the singer is not Traincha, but: Trijntje Oosterhuis, a well respected Dutch artist. Trijntje is pronounced as "traincha"in English, and in putting the prononciation instead of her name on the cover on this cd, Blue Note has done Trijntje, in my opinion, a big disservice. So if you are interested in her as a singer have a look at trijntje's other cd's.
