I will add the W201 190E 2.3 16 Valve engines. These things are just more fragile than they should have been. Lovely cars to drive and much sought after but my 1986 US-version had two engine failures between 1997 and 2004. Timing chain tensioner failure for one that trashed the engine and improper maintenance in the rebuild. Crankshaft has no keyway and must be tightened on a bench to 240 ft/pounds. Great video Pierre.

My 1982 SEC 380 has been updated with the dual roller chain and sprockets. It’s running very well. It will cruise at 80-85 mph on the interstate all day. This car was a bucket list car after I was T boned in my 1988 SEL 560. Check out my video if you want to see what happens when a modern car t-bones a SEL.

Australia here; I told my old school Mercedes mechanic to put a double row timing chain in my '83 SEC with 305,000 km on the clock. I know the terrible damage that can happen when these fail in my job as a diesel mechanic. He looked at it and said they had been replaced with double row. Good. I also keep an '84 SE 380, 195,000 km for spare parts.

Do the M110 caveats apply to the 185 hp Euro spec engines as well, or just the catalyzed low-compression US ones? I'm assuming just the US ones, since the Euro ones didn't have all the emissions stuff.

My W116 has an M110.922. It's a '79. Has 291,000 kms on the engine. Solex carb. I remember you mentioned in another video that's what you would own and love the noisey drive train. So i went out and bought one. Now i hear it's doomed.. Great! Some say they've seen M110 do over 800 000 kms... lets see what happens. Thanks for the insightful video

hey mate, I'm looking at buying a 116. anything I should look out for? just trying to get owners opinions, its either this or a w123 230e.
@omzysgarage93235 ай бұрын
Rust - in the wheel arches, the boot, floor under the back seat, doors, engine bay, hood, etc. Everything else is fixable. I've had the M102 in a W201 which is the same in the W123 230E. It was just a 2.0 litre not the 2.3. They will require a new head gasket at some stage.

@@omzysgarage9323 Hey thanks for the reply mate, I'll keep that in mind to look for rust. Would you say the w201is good daily driver?
@omzysgarage93235 ай бұрын
Yes, I daily dorve the W201- so much fun. Exactly what they're made for. However, not really suited for rainy weather as they have boot and door leak issues like other mercedes of that era.

Could you do a video about w210? Engine, electronics, transmission etc.... I am looking to buy one with around 200.000km on the clock.
@Alifarliam5 ай бұрын
If I may be so bold, he doesn’t work on/recommend w210 due to the excessive over complicated electronics/computer controls. They are however good cars when well maintained, I personally drive one. The m112/m113 has a reputation for reliability. These cars are still pretty common out in the world. It’s the last gasp of old-world Mercedes engineering, but definitely not an easily repairable mechanical vehicle like what came before. I enjoy my w210.
@trixie98675 ай бұрын
a 1996 w210 300d is very simple compared to 1998/1999 4 speed vacuum controlled transmission and less engine electronics. In 1997 it switched to a 5 speed transmission but engine electronics still minimal. 1998 was a different beast with a turbo - 1999 also
@slyscafe8 күн бұрын
I'd go for it. I have a m112 and 722.6 transmission, both passing 500k km
