(Spoilers) The Radio show had an even darker ending. After Crangle is shrunk, his bird bites his head, mistaking it for a nut. It brings a whole new meaning to the "Nut!" line the bird repeats.

They couldn't show Pete eating Crangle because it would be too gruesome for 1960s TV! It's better to leave it up to our imaginations!

I love the radio show. I know radio and television are different formats, but some of these episodes actually benefit more from Imagining what's happening through top notch voice acting and sound work. "Miniature" and "Stopover in a quiet town" are great examples.

This story was in an anthology I read for one of my middle-school English classes in the ''70s, or perhaps in one of those Scholastic books that were on offer. I didn't know, though, who wrote it, or of his Baltimore connection (he wrote for the Sun from 1943 to 1952, joining the editorial staff after that, and in1975 becoming the editor-in-chief)!

YESSSS! I’m SO Excited for Twilight Tober Zone and Four O’Clock is one of my favorite episodes. Love how Crangle is framed as threatening but the more time you spend with him, you see just how insane he is. I took it as a morality play against harassment campaigns/being a one man “justice” system that focuses only on punishment with no gray area. Plus, a brutal condemning of McCarthyism. There’s so much it could apply to: from false allegations, to harassment campaigns against vulnerable people, to a narcissist’s smear campaign for perceived slights, or an envious friend looking for an excuse to cut you out of the group. I LOVE how Theodore Bikel actually fought against McCarthyism in the 1950s and is having the time of his life playing this role that’s clearly one big fuck you to McCarthyism and other angry vigilantes who love to harass others.
