Members of the LDS Church will make sure you know that they are NOT polygamists. But if you question the validity or purpose of their ancestors practicing polygamy, they will defend it in whatever way they can!
Here I talk about four common defenses of polygamy you'll hear from believing Mormons and how all of them are, well, completely false.

I think it's really important to highlight the differences between why modern polyamory is socially acceptable to many and properly contextualized Mormon polygamy is not. In Mormon polygamy, coersion was a major factor. The issues as I see it are 1. age and power imbalances (plus the involvement of minors) 2. the dishonesty of the practice. We have records showing that Joseph married a girl as young as 14 while he was over 30. We have evidence that joseph gave promises of salvation and threats of damnation to pull in new wives and keep the old ones in line. We have evidence of Joseph sending men off on missions to marry their wives. Joseph was jailed and ultimately killed as a result of burning down a printing press to protect the secret of his wife-collecting. If you look at the evidence, the most obvious conclusion is that Joseph was a sexual deviant and criminal.

Great stories of your ancestors and historical people in the church. When you realize it was your relative that was impacted it can change your perspective.

Why do you call them "untruths" and not just "lies"? These are just plain ol' lies, right?

@@marije8562 Because they say these things thinking that they are true. They don't lie out of malice. People really believe these lies, so they keep spreading them. I wanted to make that distinction.

My ancestors were polygamists in southern Utah in the 1870s. I don't know a lot about them

@@nathanbigler Well, chances are, they were involved in the production and sale of "Dixie Wine." The Saints of southern Utah were known for their wine! So much so that at the last minute, they put some in the cornerstone of the St George Temple when it was dedicated. Those bottles were there until the remodeling a few years ago (although they had broken so there was no wine in them).

It’s funny people are ok with sleeping with 20 / 40 people and leaving the mess and kids behind, but it’s not ok to do it in God’s temples we’re thell love and honor each other promise to god virtue , raise honest kids that know the laws of god , and do it for time and eternity, this story holds no water

Joseph had painted himself into a corner with all his affairs. It was either 'Yeah sorry guys you got me. I'm an adulterous monster' or 'God has told me that Polygamy is his new will' and he chose the latter. I think it's as simple as that. After the indignant folks with some critical thinking skills, split, he was left with those willing to along with his nonsense. 'Sorry guys, now you'll have to sleep with loads of women. Not my idea, it was God that said so, and as for the women, well that's what they're there for , right?'

I am also descended from several polygamists. But why can't we just put polygamy behind us, it hasn't been practiced for such a long time. There is no reason to even think about it. It. Life was different in those days and we don't really know what it was like from their perspective. We have many modern day trials and temptations that they didn't have.

because it's a main rule in the rulebook and the rulebook says that it can't be changed so the chiefs can't change it even if they wanted - and you can be sure they want to because it's a major burden. you're welcome 😊

The current Mormon prophet is a spiritual polygamist. They don’t allow Mormon women to get a second celestial marriage “valid marriage” according to Mormonism, but they allow men if their wife dies. This teaching is still alive and hurting ppl

@@JLHoopes1In the rule book called the doctrine and covenants, it is part of the eternal marriage and promise of exaltation. Without polygamy, temple marriage is just like any other marriage.
