Four Ontario school boards suing Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta for $4.5 billion

Four Ontario school boards, including three in the Greater Toronto Area, have launched lawsuits seeking $4.5 billion in damages against Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta, the owner of both Facebook and Instagram, for creating products that they allege negligently interfere with student learning and have caused “widespread disruption to the education system.”
Four separate by similar statements of claim were filed in Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice on Wednesday by the Toronto District School Board, the Peel District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, and the Ottawa Carleton District School Board.

The school board should be sued for its role in the unjustifiably long school closures during the pandemic. Those closures caused immensely more learning loss than social media ever could. And they also caused worse mental health harms than social media could do by itself. What else did they expect kids to do for over two years at home, isolated and lonely? That’s when social media had its worst affect on our youth. What a joke. And they still won’t ever admit how BS the closures were. They say “we didn’t know better”. That’s some really slick and spineless sophistry and hand-wringing (leftists are experts at that). Closing schools from April to June was somewhat justifiable but by summer 2020, the data from around the world was crystal clear in showing that: healthy kids had a VERY low risk from the virus and spread it MUCH less than adults. Yet the closures continued. As does the cultural pathology of coddling/safetyism/helicopter parenting, whatever you want to call it. This is just more of that. The new term for it is “gentle parenting”. All of this overprotection causes so much more harm than it prevents and just makes kids and adults more anxious. But Canadians are too complacent and feckless to want to talk about any of these. Instead, the youth mental health crisis (which started in 2012) to continue worsening. Canada has a history of poor youth mental health, scoring at the bottom of all OECD countries for our abysmal teen su1c1de rate. This is nothing new, but so many people are willfully ignorant. And our youth pay the price. I have a front row seat, as I’ve worked for 20 years in adolescent mental health and the last 10 at a kid’s hospital as a mental health professional. The increase is all types of severe mental health concerns is nightmarish. I don’t relish talking about this to people outside of my field but how long can we let this silence continue. It’s sad, pathetic and honestly, it’s evil. Sometimes it’s the spineless and hysterical bleeding hearts who cause the most suffering.

Oh boy are these people in for a surprise. It’s phenomenal that parents and teachers aren’t blaming themselves. If social media is so toxic, then ban children from using it. It’s no different than x rated material. Looks like a cash grab to me, and these folks are going to get steam rolled.

They refused to teach the students the historical and recorded history over thousands of years of Israel, and how she has always been under attack, how Israel wasn’t doing damage to Gazza until they attacked on October 7 with the terror organization governing Gazza, Hamas& they took hostages. The children are standing for the wrong things by emotional response, instead of actual knowledge, I wish I could post pictures here, you should’ve seen how absolutely beautiful Gazza was, even the people made magazines to send to their relatives afar to try and talk them into moving there. Who would invite a relative to live in an open air prison? I bet you none of the kids know that it was Hadrian in the first century that hated the Jews, who called it the Greek pronunciation of Palestine to insult the Jews over their arch enemy the philistines. Then Britain did the same thing until after World War II the rest of the time the land was called Israel (and since)Arabs and Jews live there together basically fine until the PLO ! I bet the kids have not been told that Jews were kicked out of Gazza in 06 in a land for peace steel, and they even had to take their dead from the ground with them into Israel (the rest of it) so there was no occupation of Gaza!

I read a piece about this on google ... The school board is saying there has been problems in the past 4 yrs. Ummm dont they remember kids were locked in there homes ! I think this is a way to try and get money. The government sure isnt giving enought funding to schools. I also think , how dare these school boards talk for me as a parent. Kids here all have there phones on parental settings and monitored ... Its up to the parents. I remember when schools blamed TV for the very same stuff they are accusing the apps for. This is a complete joke and unfortunately in the end the tsx payers are going to be footing the bills. We are already taxed beyond belief !

April 21,2020 I filed a report to school boards and police. Regarding human trafficking and sex trafficking of minors. They are trying to get funds to protect against some bringing some heavy evidence against them.

Agree. It's a sobering reality most parents are disconnected from their children's lives, exhibiting a lack of concern for their activities outside of school, social media consumption habits and their academic progress. They are lazy!
