I have just made something similar in Korg's OpSix FM synth. In the the User Algorithm tab you can design your own operator stuff in a matrix. VCA's 3 and 5 and 2 and 6 are the same though. Got some cool sounds out of it. Never heard of the Buchla 700 before, interesting.

Great video, Aaron. I'm guessing the beating you mention at 5:00 is because the Drift knob (in the Master section) is set to a non-zero value - you want that on zero for pure non-wobbly FM.

Oh! That's good to know. I didn't even notice that knob.

A little drift is nice in pretty much any application OTHER than FM/phase mod! Also, the Sub and Super sliders are often really useful when doing FM.

@@CherryAudiovst Hello Cherry Audio! I'm loving Sines; someone on the Pro Synth Network group on Facebook suggested I check it out (knowing my interest in the Buchla 700).

cool, never heard of Buchla 700. How does this "Yamaha" FM stuff work? something like voltage controlled sine wave oscillators? Did you ever peak at the Akai MPC X? quad core, 24 bit audio, touchscreen. it has a plugin that can do a TB-303 but has more waves options using a knob, morphing waves a real analog vco can't do. also cool drum modelers that can emulate tr-808, tr-909, cr78, etc. best musical tool out there.

Very cool! Do you think you could do a video about pure data in this context?

@@Lantertronics Hey, no problem! I'm just starting out with PD, it's super interesting! I want to use it to experiment with physical modeling and reverb algorithms.

oh wow... how would you do phase modulation in a eurorack? I have 7 oscillators in my eurorack set up including the new tiptop buchla twin, and I am wanting to try out this patch. Thanks
@Lantertronics

I don't think most modules have a phase modulation input, but if they have a *linear* FM input you can very much do something along these lines. The thing you want to avoid is exponential FM input (which can be fun in its own right, but will give you all sorts of clangorous inharmonic sounds).

@@Lantertronics ahh ok, I have a doepfer thru zero oscillator with linear frequency input. I just need another three to make your patch lol. Thanks for the vid, really informative.

The Joranalogue Generate 3 has phase modulation (and linear + exponential FM). You would need 4 of them to replicate this patch though.

I've been playing with replicating Configuration 0 in Bitwig's Grid modular synth. How do you model indexes 3 and 6? I have them as an attenuator followed by an AM/Ringmod module and it does sound good but I wonder how close that is to the original model. I also played with adding a bit of skew and wavefolding to the oscillators themselves which sounds really good and I think you can do that in Sines as well
@Lantertronics
@Lantertronics 2 жыл бұрын
In may supercollider implementation I model them as attenuators going into a nonlinear wave shaping function. A wavefolder is one possibility. On the Buchla 360, 400, and 700 (and ID700) these are implemented with Chebychev polynomials. On old analog Buchlas like the 259 and the Music Easel the waveshaper is a fixed wave folder.
