How did the young, wealthy women of Ancient Rome spend their days? Meet Domitia and her sister Domitia and her sister Domitia and her sister Domitia. Ray Laurence sketches the domestic life of leisure that these young girls lived, despite little recorded information on women from this otherwise well-documented era.
Lesson by Ray Laurence, animation by Cognitive Media.

@@Jacksiloution Dude, I did brawl with some boys in kindergarten and elementary school. They didn't fight back, they started the fight. A simple "hey, cut it out!" from the girls would result in more pushing, poking, hair pulling, and skirt lifting. No way I'd just leave if my girl friends were bullied. Would be nice if they don't tease or bully the girls in the first place. What did the girls do to 'deserve' that? Play with blocks, dolls, or swings; read books; walk past them; heck, even just sit around without a teacher watching us may result in bullying. Things were better from middle school up tho.

Ashley L, well, it depends on the city state in Greece. For instance, In Sparta, the Greek women did a whole lot more; as most of the males were out and about in the military (as was the SPARTA! way). They even allowed women to do some business dealings. Which would have been anathema in other areas.

Roman Slave:My Master, one of your slaves has offended you, but I beg that you punish me in their stead. Roman Master: why should I punish you and not the one who has offended me. Roman Slave: Because I am willing to take the pain of others so I do not need to see them suffer. I am a Slave and that is what I am meant for, but I am a Roman slave therefore I am Roman making me courageous and just, so I will take this burden as a true Roman. Roman Master: Then I shall punish you, but not harshly. For not many True Romans would do a thing. In this I admire you in courage but despise you in stupidity. It is not your place to take the punishment of others, but I will make the exception this one time. Old Roman tale that I remember as a kid.

Siblings in Roman times were often named after numerals in order of their birth. So I guess that these sisters actually were called Prima ("first one"), Seconda ("second one"), Tertia ("third one") and Quarta ("fourth one"). And it was also possible to call an older sister Major ("big one") and a younger sister Minor ("little one").

Unfortunately, this video is replete with modern stereotypes. 1. Women's names could vary somewhat: Domitia, Domitilla, Domitiana. Additionally, upon marriage they could add the genitive of their husband's cognomen e.g. "Domitia Phileti." That's basically what we do today. 2. Not EVERYTHING that we have written by the Romans was written by men (Footnote 2). 3. Nude co-sex bathing is now thought to have occurred through most of the history of Rome. (Footnote 3) 4. Women could indeed go into the Forum....How else would they shop at the markets there?...A huge piece of the Pompeiian Forum was donated by a business-WOman. 5. Women did indeed exercise a role in public--even political--life, even though it was thru the men she could influence via campaign advertisements, dinners, etc. Why only thru men? Because they were the top-members of the social units. In a non-electronic society, social units (families/estates) have representation--thru their top member--not direct voting. Also voting this early was an expression of military (exclusively male) & land-owning (mostly male) clout. 6. Women weren't voiceless over these mores: History records certain patrician women slapping other women for getting out of line (e.g. Footnote 6). 7. I've been in the top of the Colosseum. You're close to the fighting. Its back row is twice as close as the Ohio State Football stadium's. Now for what's not said, but implied: 8. YOU JUST DON'T SEE ANCIENT WOMEN ANYWHERE AGITATING FOR POLITICAL RIGHTS!!!...To imply that they should've (based on our modern context) is to totally put made-up words into their mouths. Indeed, voting In Rome was so rare & often so insignificant in the things voted for, that most males didn't have the right, and even when they did they rarely travelled to Rome to exercise it. @Zakeamass

You are incorrect. 35 is the average, due to high infant and child mortality. If you lived past 10 you could easily live into your 50s and beyond. 15 is only young by today's standards, standards that have only come about in the past half a century.

Unfortunately this video is a little generalising in terms of information. The title should probably have been "four YOUNG sisters" as it fails to recognise some of the liberties of women during ancient rome. Though I'm not entirely sure if they spanned through to the the installation of emperors, Roman women were allowed to work and own their own businesses as well as become matrons (female patrons). Compared to other ancient cultures, such as the athenians, Romans were actually quite progressive in their own ways. Though it is true that women were not allowed to hold political power in the senate.

They did have their birth order to help things out; if there were only one or two daughters, they were given 'Elder'/ Major & 'Younger'/ Minor, as devices, ie. Antonia Major & Antonia Minor, the two daughters of Marc Antoni (also related to mothers & daughters, ie, Julia the Elder & Julia the Younger, the daughter & granddaughter of Augustus) - with more than two, they kept it simple, with numbers: Prima (first), Secunda (second), Tertia (third), Quarta (fourth), Quinta* (fifth), Nonia (ninth) & so on - Brutus (yes, *that* Brutus) had three half-sisters through his mother's second marriage to Decimus Junius Silanius, all named Junia; while little is known of Junia Prima, her sisters were more prominent- Junia Secunda was wife to Lepidus, of the Second Triumvirate, & Junia Tertia (also known as Tertulla) became somewhat famous in her time, being sister & wife to Caesar's assassins Brutus & Cassius, respectively- & the fortune she amassed, by outliving her male relations. * also feminisation of the name Quintus

Much thanks to Mr. Laurence and the TEDeD animators for this and the boys' video. I'm using it to teach my Korean students about Roman history, and the simple style, the focus on youth, and the closed captions is absolutely perfect for my needs.

Since we only really focus on the grander parts of history, it's easy to forget everyone had their own daily lives.
