I've got a Basenji/Jack Russell Terrier mix that was a rescue about 3 years ago. From day one, he'd poke me repeatedly with his nose, and I couldn't figure out why, though eventually the penny dropped when I found out I was hypoglycemic. Turned out, he was poking me because he could tell my blood sugar was low.

Rat terriers are my absolute favorite ❤My Bestie gave me one when my Pomeranian passed to get me out of my depression. She was so tiny she fit in a coffee cup. Never one sick day in her sixteen years, EXTREMELY loyal to me and my husband. She had a brilliant sense of good and bad people and behaved accordingly 😂 she would put out cigarettes if people threw them on the ground scratching at them until the fire was out, she loved balls or anything that she could retrieve, we won many bets by throwing a rock as far as we could into the woods and she would bring back the same rock no matter how far you threw it and even in the dark. No rodents or bugs ever stood a chance around her, get the bug was her favorite thing to do😂. We miss her terribly😢 Rest in peace Marley Jean forever in our ❤️s

I do wish people would stop docking ears and tails, our rottie managed quite well with a full tail for 13 years. It does nothing for the dog only the owners ego.
@teresahaven9222
@teresahaven9222 2 жыл бұрын
I agree to a point. Docking only needs to be done if they are actually a true working dog, working at what they were bred to do. We have a pit, ears and tail are as they were when he was born. I have to admit, I have been injured more than once from that damn tail!!! And the coffee table gets cleared whenever he is around! He is STRICTLY a family pet
@DMarkAgostinelli
@DMarkAgostinelli Жыл бұрын
Almost all breeds are bred to do a job. Docking is done because the breed is meant to do a job. An example.. is with the fighting dogs, it would get bitten off. With search dogs the tail is used as a handle. Some dogs have long tails so it can be as a flag in the distance. Most rat hunting dogs have ears that are up because they will get infections from digging. Etc. Thus why they are docked . It has nothing to do with ego. I promise! In fact, it is considered irresponsible NOT to follow the instructions of the breed. It will eventually lead to the demise of the breed from improperly breeding and allowing emotions to get in the way. The emotions itself is the ego of the owner. So therefor the ego of the owner is in the way of properly breeding, docking and even training. Only because they think they are right when I fact they are not. Be grateful of our ancestors. They created all of these wonderful dogs. It only takes a couple of generations to ruin a 1000 years of research and breeding. Doing things like mixing the breeds and not docking etc. It all leads to the destruction.

It's actually illegal in UK, unless it is a rescue dog from abroad and has already had it done,or for medical reasons, docking dogs tails doesn't happen anymore, which I am pleased about as a dogs tail and ears are part of the way a dog expresses itself, and how it shows other dogs how it feels, also it's lovely to see a dog wag it's tail when it's pleased to see you.

I had a Spanish Podenco. What an awesome dog he was. Smart and easy to train, wonderful temperament, and sensitive to others - great with children. I gave my Rocky a big run everyday, and in the house, he was an affectionate couch potato after that, lol. He saved my MIL's life, alerting her to her deteriorating medical condition - all without special training.

After having many of the large breed dogs throughout my life I went to the smallest breeds. Why? Because in general, they live longer. Breeders…breed a healthy dog that lives a minimum of 25 years. I can’t take the loss of any more beloved friends. That’s it.🤷🏻‍♀️

As a child, one of my favorite books was my Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds. My favorite breeds are Australian cattle dogs, AKA Blue Heelers, and Papillons. Both highly intelligent, I had my heeler for 17 years. He was the cleverest, most loyal dog ever. They tend to be ‘one-person’ dogs, and require lots of exercise and/or a job to keep them busy. My blue heeler’s name was Cosmo. I picked him out of a litter of 15, a farming family was selling the pups for $150 back before they were entered in the AKC. I held several puppies before I got to him, and he relaxed in my arms. The farmer said “He’ll be a mellow one.” Over the course of his long life he was stolen and recovered TWICE, he saved another dog’s life and outlived every other pet our family had. He was a gift every day of his 17 years and he took his daily run every up until two days before his death. He didn’t have a long illness. I say he was a good dog to the end. I was older when my heeler died and I wanted smaller dogs which would be easier to care for. My papillons are brothers, same parents one litter apart. They are cheerful and energetic, affectionate and fun. Not to mention completely adorable. They do tend to bark a lot, and they need lots of early socialization to avoid being fearful. At 5 and 6 years old now, they are well-behaved companions. Highly intelligent, they’ve been such a joy. One is a service dog, trained to wake me from nightmares and sleep walking, and to comfort me. The other one flunked completely, lacks focus and is far less treat-motivated, and is just my pet. ♥️❤️♥️ Dogs are unconditional love incarnate.❤ In this video, I REALLY LOVE the Belgian Lakenois, the Cirneco Dell’etna, and the Pumi, but they’re all beautiful and fascinating. ❤❤

I´ve got a Bodeguero Andaluz Terrier unique to Spain. It somehow resembles Jack Russell Terrier or Fox Terrier (the ones that the British took to Southern Spain centuries ago) and that was crossed with local ratters. Bodegueros were and still are bred to hunt mice where wine barrels are kept. Nowadays it´s a unique breed and even in Spain itself many people are not familiar with it. They have a very high prey drive, are very athletic and fast and need tons of exercise. Ohio, my dog is 3 months old and I already love him too much!

I love seeing some of my fav sighthounds like the Azawakh, Scottish Deerhound and Sloughi but notice you used Saluki pics on the Sloughi section and most of your Scottish deerhounds looked to Wolfhounds. A Scottish deerhound is closer to a male greyhound in size than the Irish Wolfhound. We love the XL big boys who weigh over 90lbs. They make such wonderful, sweet pets!

Gazehounds are dog breeds that hunt primarily by sight rather than by scent: The Saluki is one the oldest gazehound breeds, going back nearly five thousand years. They moved from the Arabian desserts with their owners and spread north along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and then as far east as the edges of the Gobi Desert and China. There are several versions of these dogs that appear to have come out of Africa alongside human beings. There were early religious laws that 'allowed' people to eat the desert antelopes that the gazehounds caught but not anything that had been hunted by 'dogs'. The Sloughi was another early version of this African gazehound that has only recently been recognized as a formal breed of dog by various Kennel Clubs in Europe. There are also several Greyhound-like breeds of dogs that have been developed in India for hunting game. Next there were the gazehound breeds that were developed in the 'Middle Ages' like Greyhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, and Irish Wolfhounds. They were used to hunt Stags across Northern Europe and tended to be owned only by the rich and the 'royals' who were allowed to have these large hunting dogs that roamed the woods and pasture lands with their owners on horse-back to catch various kinds of deer. The dogs of the poor peasants were 'cur-tailed' - that is, they had their tails cropped short when they were little puppies. This was originally done to keep these dogs from hunting. With short stubby tails, the dogs couldn't use their tails to balance all the quick moves they would have to be able to make in order to catch small game animals like hares and rabbits or larger game, like deer. More recently, people bred small Whippets that lived in the homes of many of the coal miners in the British Isles. These little gazehounds were good at catching rabbits for the family stew pots and were later used as small 'straight- line racers' who were dearly loved and cared for in the miner's homes and trained to run straight in very short races. Families were quick to boast that their Whippet was the 'fastest one' in the village and more than a few bets were made on the outcome of Whippet races. Other gazehounds in Europe weren't formal dog breeds but types of dogs that were a combination of one or two other gazehounds, like 'Lurchers'. These were gazehounds that were often used to poach 'game' from the royal land preserves owned by the rich. They were kept for hunting deer and rabbits silently so they didn't 'advertise' their presence by barking and 'yodelling' like the Foxhounds that were owned by the 'rich' and the 'royals'. Hope this brief introduction helps anyone interested in a gazehound breed to find out a little more about these hounds.

I agree, these are ancient breeds. Now, some of them have been known to the community for 3000 years but to the AKC only briefly (azawakh recognized in 2019), but lots of the dogs listed here have been recognized for ages

@Roxanne Angelina In england that was considered either a Greyhound (or possibly whippet) crossed with a terrier OR a Greyhound (or possibly whippet) crossed with a collie Why the two distinct different crosses? I don't know. I speculate it was that the poachers or gypsies needed slightly different dogs for different purposes. Terriers were probably a good dog to mix in w When speed combined with digging and a real thirst for game in dens and warrens were around. I'm guessing the collie gave intelligence and bidability. This might be a better choice if you were having your dog dash in, snatch a chicken, and bring it back. I also wonder:. Did a poacher or gypsies have a couple dogs if each type? Or did one group have one type and just worked spots where it matched best?

I have several favorite breeds….. Great Dane, Shitzu, Bolognese, golden retriever, the bully dog breeds are at the top of my favorite lists. I would say the one thing they all have in common is responding well to affectionate Training, and highly resistant with negative results from physically abusive Training. I had one that had a strong sense of what was right and what was wrong. If you told him that he was a bad boy, he would be apologetic, and try not to do it again. But.! if he was innocent, and doing what he supposed to do, and told him that he was bad, he’s just as likely to growl at you. He knew when he was good, and he would not except being called bad when he knew he hadn’t done anything.

Actually children and dogs that could permanently disfigure or kill them don't belong in the same room together, and playing Russian roulette with an unpredictable animal is your decision not mine..... REALITY- From 1982 to 2022, Doberman Pinschers were responsible for eight deaths in the United States: Number of attacks: 23 documented attacks Number of deaths: 8 deaths Number of serious injuries: 12 serious injuries Doberman attacks often occur in the dog's home or yard, and children are often the victims.

I love gazehounds of all kinds. While they can be crazy as puppies, they mature into wonderful family dogs especially if you have a large fenced area for them to run in safely. They all require gentle, calm handling as they withdraw into themselves if they are ordered around. Since they were bred to be coursing dogs, they will chase and hunt and need to be well-trained as puppies about what they can chase and what they should leave alone. They all do best with other gazehounds as some never seem to think of themselves as 'dogs'. As adults they reserve their running for suitable places and are quiet company when they are 'at home'. They are highly intelligent but don't respond to any kind of heavy-handed training - a moment's bossy or forceful training will not be forgiven easily! As long as you don't expect an immediate response to your command to "come", you might love the companionship of a gazehound. They tend to be healthy and long-lived as their genetics have been stable for centuries - or as in the bloodline of Salukis, for thousands of years. Whippets can be the perfect dog for people with small apartments. They do well in a family situation and are happy to have a good long run once or twice a day befor retiring to their 'special chair' at home.

The Mexican Xoloitzquintle pronounced, "Show low eats queent lee" aka the "Mexican Hairless", was officially recognized by the AKC on Oct 26 1986. This primitive breed is known as the oldest breed of dog in the Americas, going back as late as 1500 BC in Mexico and possibly even as far back as 4,000 BC. It comes in both hairless (pelon) and coated varieties, and the largest or standard sized pelon version with top breeders papers has gone for $10,000 in the US. Don't feel too bad that you mispronounced it, as it is a Nahuatl/Aztec word......Xolotl being the Aztec/Mexica (Meh she' ka) god of fire and thunder, and itzquintle simply meaning "dog"....and then there is the Mexican Chamuco, meaning "Devil", that isn't recognized by any kennel club or organization in the world..... this pitbull derived monster is fearsome to behold, but because it was bred as a fighting dog, it is considered taboo.

I've always wanted a Mexican Xoloitzquintle From the first time I saw one, right now I have a Chinese Crested which I got 10 years ago on my 50th birthday when I saw a add out where I went camping it turns out the people who had him couldn't get their other dog to like him. He is not well and I have about 8 months with him if his meds keep working 😥 I love him so much 🤧 💗

I have a Malinois/Collie cross. He is probably one of the most intelligent dogs I've ever owned + the most energetic. It took me until he was two to completely train him. And he is incredibly responsive, if a bit stubborn. He is not vocal at all, you have to coax him to bark. But he is incredibly good at alerting me to someone around that he doesn't know. He has this low, very intense growl/huff that will raise the hair on my neck. That sound is only and always means there's a human near that he doesn't know. And he will lower his head and stare straight at it like a wolf. lol Late at night it can make the heart thump a little. It's also very intimidating when it's done in person. My friend takes him with her at night when she goes on a walk. She says that when anyone approaches he goes into instant guard mode and shifts between her and the other person with his head lowered watching them intently. He doesn't growl loudly, but it's intense, and that huff.... ooof. He's also the neighborhood kids favorite dog. He loves all kids and the littler they are the happier he is to be around them. He's very tolerant of them. I don't know which breed lends to most of his behaviors, but I love the mix and he's the best dog I've ever had as part of our family.

@@bartangel4867 it's always alarming when you see "factual" videos that get basic information wrong. I then question every piece of information presented in the vid. I once saw a "fact video" about leopards but would see a lot of footage of cheetahs throughout the video. Something so basic! As a BIG FAN of the Leonberger breed, I was thrown aback during that portion and very confused. I began questioning myself until I saw your comment. I didnt see any other comments pointing this out or pointing out many of the other inconsistencies in the video.

@@ebonimom6964 It has to be a leonberger ether that or Lion d Occatine but they are basically same breed except Lion d occatine is little bit bigger because it person who developed lion occatine believed that original creator of Leonberger made its maximum height higher than than the maximum height of modern leonberger. so she basically found largest leonbergers that she could find and started the breeding program. but regardless if it is a typical leoneberger or occatine type leonberger it is not pyrenean shepherd. it is a leoneberger. and those breed are only very slightly similar (basically they both have long hair) but the shape of the head the size they have nothing in common and anyone would be able to differentiate between the two. I don't know that much about lionberger but I know why it was created and i know it had Landseer blood and I think Saint Bernard. and I have basic idea about size but that is about it. it is a beautiful dog. oh and I think great Pyrenees was used as well.

In college years ago, I babysat for one of my professors, and they had a basset hound. I’d never seen one before. What a dog! Just hanging out, looking at the world. Out of the blue, he’d jump straight up and just zoom around the house and howl for about 5 minutes. I almost had a heart attack, thinking he was having some kind of seizure or something. I loved him after that. So great!

I just call it doggie glitter. 🤷‍♀️ I currently have a female who weighs on at 55 pounds and from a working line. She has jobs to do around the house. She guards, protects, and makes sure the squirrels stay out of her yard. If someone visits and throws her ball it's over. They have officially become her ball bitch.

And yes, the shedding is out if this world but i handle it! He also is allergic to everything but beef as the main protein and yougurt. No fish, fowl, pork is allowed or he itches like crazy and loses a great deal of fur on his underside, and his ears get clogged really bad. I give him supplements that help. I agree, stop docking tails. I have 2 Australian Shepherds. 1 has his tail but unfortunately my little girl, CocoaPuff was docked before we picked her up. They have beautiful tails and don't get in the way of anything like when they poo. My all time favorite dog is the German Shepherd. I have had 2 and they were the very best dogs ever. I would have gotten another but we are not out in the country on 5 acres anymore. Then German Shepherd needs that room to run. Fortunately for us and my Australian Shepherds we have a fantastic park here in Florida that we take them to. They are very loyal, loving, hearding dogs and also need to get much exercise. We paid $1,400. for each one. I also do work for the animal shelters. It's such a fulfilling thing to do. Please help your local shelters. They do so much and try very hard to get the dogs new homes. ❤❤

In Europe, the Malinois, Laekenois, Groenendael and Tervuren are all classified as a Belgian Shepherd. Here in the United States they are separate. As far as temperament goes, they are pretty much the same. The Wire Haired Griffon (Wire haired pointing Griffon dog) is a superior gun dog that is a very hard working & intelligent breed originally Dutch but many consider it a French breed. However, it originated in Holland.
