I think this also shows why the injuries hurt United so much this season. They have almost never played with Martinez Varane as their centerback pairing. It's like having Arsenal play without Saliba and Gabriel for the majority of the season. You can't just compare teams and say ''they had injuries too'', because it's way more nuanced. Where are the injuries exactly? United still played without an actual left-back this game.

Martinez played 14 games this season, that's more than James and Nkunku and only 2 fewer than Chilwell. That's the new striker, the captain and the most expensive defender for Chelsea. Haven't seen many defending Chelsea's season with they had injuries.

I am ecstatic at that win, but I also feel vindication. Because I believe Ten Hag had the exact same plan 12 months ago, in the last FA Cup final, but when we conceded a stupid goal less than a minute into the game, the whole plan of patiently stopping City goes out the window, they’re happy to just hold the ball and see the game out with a 1-0 lead, United had to gamble and press which played into City’s hands. But this time, United got a bit of luck, they were much more stable, there were no silly errors, and United could just be patient and force City to try and win the game. Played into United’s hands, and I know people will say City were unlucky not to score from Haaland’s shot hitting the bar, or Alvarez’s near miss. But United were unlucky to have their goal ruled out and there were many times where United’s press was a fraction of a second too slow for City and they just marginally escaped a catastrophe. As a Man United fan. Honestly with all the crap we have endured this season. This game, this win, was a very special one. I want to give very special praise to a couple of players who could have flopped in this game but did not. 1. Rasmus Hoiljund. This guy is going to be our striker for the next decade. We just need to find him. This kid scored a few goals across the season living on scraps. He gets benched despite being the only fit striker at the club. Yet he does not moan or grumble. When he got on, he did exactly what the team needed. Chasing down lost causes, fighting for every ball, even winning 2 free kicks in dangerous areas. We need to support his growth next season. Still he needs a mature world class striker to rotate with which will give him time develop. 2. Sofiyan Amrabat. This guy just showed the United transfer window department how important it is to get a young, defensive midfielder who is inherently calm and responsible. The second goal was scored only because of him. No disrespect to Casemiro but if it was the Brazilian, he would not have taken those extra touches to help his team get into position while dragging other players towards him. The Morrocan still isn't the player I would go for as a permanent transfer as he can be a little clunky on the turn and not as press-resistant, however in this game, I felt apart from a couple of shaky moments, he was amazing; both in possession and defensively. 3. Marcus Rashford. The guy could have sulked and fail to turn up considering the fact that he did not make it to the England national team for the Euros. (Frankly I actually think it would be a blessing in disguise for him as he needs a good full off-season break.) I suspect that he was injured during this final in the early stages of the game but he stayed on. I say this because in the early stages he ran hard, press aggressively but after that he kinda was a little cautious in everything he did so I suspect he got injured. Still he played unselfishly for the final and set up the 2nd goal. I hope next season he will regain his form.

Great analysis. The "withdrawn 4-2-4" was a work of genius which, as you say, stopped City in the central areas. But I think one thing you missed was how this stopped Rodri performing for pretty much the whole game. This is a guy who had not lost in 90 mins for over a year. McTominay followed him everywhere - he probably sat beside him on the bus back to Manchester. Rodri dictates their play and United did not let him settle. He is usually able to break the lines in midfield in the W that you pointed out. However, when that is suffocated, Rodri is usually excellent at spreading the ball out wide to create space yet McSauce (and at times Bruno) did not allow him to do this well as he had little time to set himself, which is another reason City could not exploit the space out wide effectively. When Doku started the chaos on the left, the whole United side began to drift over to that side but McTominay stuck diligently to his task. The one time Rodri found space, he broke the lines when it was Mainoo who pressed him (meaning United were out of shape) and he then found Foden in a pocket to then set up that Alvarez chance. After that miss, United seemed to recalibrate to the City changes and did not look threatened again until Onana made that howler. Obviously it is not as simplistic as "Stop Rodri, you stop City" but if you can stop Rodri, you stop City...

What amazed me more thab anything in yesterday performance was from Man Utd after watching this analysis, it was not just Utd rode their luck to their win (in most cases when we won against them and yes Haaland hit the post and we got a break from their defender), it was just City were never close to scoring or a threat to Utd. KDB substitution says all about it. City were a better team in possession and no ever team in history will have more possession than them but Utd were just a better team in all other areas. It was a perfect execution my Utd team and in the second half, it was all about Utd hanging on, containing City and the difference to the last year final was Utd had a better bench with options even though not match fit. Ramas simply coming on to teplace Rashford says it all. Ramas was causing problems every time we went long. City couldn't come out all out.

Rashford's pass across the field in the build-up to the second goal is among the most memorable. The fact that he even dared to do so, in a pressure-cooker match with the stakes so high says a lot about his confidence. It could easily have gone out and leading to a City throw-in. This is very fair analysis of the game. This season couldn't build on the last because the two CBs that was crucial to their defense last season was injured. Ten Hag got both Martinez & Varane back in this game, and they won the cup. Ten Hag's game tends to also build from the back. When Martinez was out, he had Shaw to cover last season. He had neither of them this season, and that also affect the team in attack. Pep sum it up perfectly in post match interview that Martinez was making a massive difference in this game with his defense splitting passes...

We were so lucky that we had the perfect counter weapon for Man City's Doku.. Wan Bissaka.. undoubtedly the best 1v1 defender on that pitch.. if it was Dalot.. the result would have been different.. that's why AWB is a good back up right back to keep.. definitely when we require a specialist to nerf the opposition players.. like he has done to Sterling, Salah, Mahrez, now Doku.. ( btw that goal was due to Onana's mistake and the midfielders not closing down Doku quickly)..

Naah, Liverpool have one of the worst 1vs1 defenders in Trent and they still manage to go toe to toe with City. Another example is Carvajal at Real Madrid. @12:04: this has to be said, because I don't think Wan Bissaka gets enough love for this. If Jeremy Doku is THAT guy you want attacking the 1v1 on the wing, Wan Bissaka is THAT guy you want defending it. Best in the world specifically at 1v1 defending. In fact he had Doku completely handled (though he was testing Wan Bissaka) until Silva moved over there and overloaded that wing forcing Wan Bissaka to rely on his winger to help him defend (which then also swung back in Man Utd's favour when Mount replaced Garnacho because he's also better defensively than Garnacho is) Was a really interesting matchup on City's left when Doku came on tbh. Felt a bit like a tug of war between one of the best 1v1 attackers in the world and the best 1v1 full back in the world. I also don't buy into the whole "City weren't themselves" excuse people have been using They weren't themselves because Man Utd set up to make it so; it's more a testament to how tactically brilliant Man Utd were that game than it is to City having an off game

Something I have seen nobody say is that Diogo Dalot needs credit for absolutely man marking Bernardo completely out of the game. Garnacho also made Gvardiol his btch the whole game, the first goal was just the start. AWB put up a good fight against Doku, but ultimately lost that battle as he was allowed to put one in.

The journalists including former players hosting popular shows are on top of that pile. It took Klopp seasons before Liverpool could win anything and because they were at their lowest bottom, there were no expectations. But one look at the journey of what he was building and then it was realised what he was truly creating.

This was the first time I saw City helpless in the first half. They looked really out of ideas. United always had the same plan in previous encounters with City under ETH but the players were not brave and courageous enough to execute it. This time they looked brave and purposeful, they played like it was their last game of the season.

This game is why SOOOO many Utd fans are SOOOO upset/puzzled, yet happy and ecstatic about ETH. He goes and puts together this AMAZING game plan that is incredibly well thought out and gives his Utd team the best chance at not only defending against the mighty sh*ty team, but also the best game plan to create some goal scoring chances utilizing their two most dangerous players in Garnacho and Rashford. But WHYYYYY can't he do this all season?! That is the vexing part of ETH. We all know he can have amazing game plans and has genius in him. That's never been the question in his two years at Old Trafford. Look what he did at Ajax! More than half of his players from those years have gone on to bigger and better clubs and are fantastic players. What the question is, is: can he do it game in and game out, even without the entire team he really wants? And he showed he CAN in this game. So why not all year?! I know the injuries are a big part of it, but it's more than that. It feels like Erik just wanted to force a game plan, formation and strategy that WILL not work with the current players on Utd. And has been stubborn about it. When in fact, he should have tempered his expectations of what these guys can and can not do. It's abundantly clear, that a lot of these current Utd players can not play how Erik needs and wants. They're too slow, not smart enough, too lazy, etc. Only about half of this current team can do what Erik wants. Erik should have been coming up with game plans and tactics like this ALL year. And play the best way for THIS team. Erik needs to change his tactics and formations this coming year to the team Utd are playing until he can get an entire squad full of highly competent players that can and will play how he wants. THEN, he can dictate the style of play he wants. SUCH a frustrating season and a lot of it could have been solved if Erik would just stop being so stubborn and play tactics and lineups that suit the current team. Not what he EXPECTS them to be. But obviously he's not the only one to blame. A LOT of the blame falls on the owners and then the players themselves. But I think this huge win, and INEOS coming in (hiring and installing all sorts of great front office guys like Omar and Jason, with more to come) is REALLY going to help Erik and Utd become a much much better team sooner than later. I think 2-3 transfer windows and Utd could possibly be right back at the top of the EPL! Fingers crossed, haha

As someone who, by and large, thinks ETH probably deserves the sack overall this season, it saddens me to see just what he's capable of doing. I can't get my head round why he refused to move to a slightly less chaotic/suicidal system all season. If we had even played with a mid block and even slightly more compact this season we'd be talking about a contract extension and not a sacking right now. Such a shame.

I'm a massive United fan and I'm backing Erik Ten Hag. I'll try to defend him here What we played in the final is a counter attacking style which suits our players because it was used by our previous 2 managers. (Mourinho & Ole). Now I'm not saying Ten Hag just threw this tactics in there because the players are familiar with it. No, It's just that it's really effective against teams like Man City, that's why Ole won 4 times against Pep and Mourinho beat Pep 3-2 at Etihad. But it's also important to know that Ten Hag did tweak this counter attacking formation to match this CURRENT city not city from Ole's era. We are all aware Ten Hag is trying to make us a transitional team, and Ten Hag's Transitional style relies heavily on our defense. Especially Lisandro Martinez and Varane, with this pairing being out for the entire season it has disrupted this system massively. I know you mentioned mid block, you can't play a mid block whiles playing a high press. That will only work if your backline plays a high line. Meaning being compact in the middle and having your back line as close to the midfield leaving space in behind knowing your center backs have the pace to cover if anything. Eg. like Tottenham, Aston Villa But we don't have pacey defenders. Maguire, Evans, Lindelof and even Varane are not suited for a high line. They can't go on a foot race with pacey strikers. The only option for Ten Hag was to completely abandon the transitional high press style and play maybe a counter attacking style So why hasn't he played counter attacking all season? First of all Ten Hag is a coach that wants his team to have possession, he doesn't want to sit back and get dominated for 90mins, If we play a counter attacking system it surely will solve the massive problem we have now which is the amount of shots conceded this season. But in the long run it derails your building process. Playing a counter attacking system means during the transfer window you will have to change your transfer plans and go for players who fit that system over a ball playing profile of player. Mind you, Ten Hag in the long run wants to have a ball playing team who will possess ball like the likes of Arsenal and City, so if you play a counter attacking system for results now you derail the future progress and when you later decide to switch to a ball playing system you will find yourself with a squad full of counter attacking players which means you will have to sell them and bring in players that can actually hold on to balls and play splitting passes through defense and trust me by then you will start to underperform badly. Every rebuild is tough, It won't be smooth in the beginning as the player profiles do not suit what you've set down to do and we can all see how poor we are due to injuries and effect of bad transfer strategies over the last 10 years. We don't need a new manager, what we need is a good recruitment system and Dan Ashworth to come in a set out what type of team we want to be and what style of football we want to play. If we get these things right we will become a title challenging team. We have a good manager in our hands, Ten Hag has won trophies in every club he has coached and in 2 seasons here he has been to 3 finals and won 2 of them. We need to back him, and clear out the players that are not good enough we will win titles

This was the season he wanted to actually implement the style of play but unfortunately because of all the injuries it hasn't been successful. Do people really think he bought Onana to play long balls all season, lot of our players have very limited skill set. I seriously hope Ten hag doesn't get sacked.

@@Inside064 Good one and indeed. I think he mentioned it in his Neville interview. As it was the second season and with the signings made he wanted to start implementing his style. So long term get the players used to it even if that sometimes cost short term results. Because of all the injuries it was super inconsistent. Especially with the center backs out meaning the attack would still press while the defense sat lower because of lack of speed. So all that room in the middle came there. I think next season he will switch to a double pivot while still wanting to be more on the front foot. Instead of the singel pivot he tried this season. Probably the best balance. Then against the City's of this world can do what he did this match or similar.

@@okplld Last season was clearly adaptation and this season was implementing his style, exactly as you say it. And honestly I think it would have been Implemented or we would've seen glimpses of what is to come if injuries didn't derail our season. If you go back and watch our pre season match against Lens you would see what we missed in this season. Lots of great transitional plays and triangular passes made in that game. I hope he stays and gets backed by Ineos.

Actually if we study City's goal closer, we can see that Doku was 1 v 1 against Garnacho in the inside channel when he scored. If Guardiola had a classic system of FB hokding the width and Doku coming inside, maybe Doku would have won his 1v1's and they could've beat Man Utd. But Pep wanted to prove that he was Pep so he lost in the Pep way.
