I’m very surprised how good the boiler is at the firebox end and with none of that mysterious grooving effect in either the inner or outer firebox wrapper which can happen just above the foundation ring. Also a big surprise that an ordinary freezer can reduce a pin by even a thou or two. Terrific work.

What amazes me about this series, is not only the engine itself with its thousands of juicy details, also the amazing collection of tools ("with the right tools, we move mountains") you have at your disposal, and of course, the skills to not only know you NEED such a tool -- also the SKILLS to use the tool to the desired end effect. Wonderful video !

Smarta arse Q. The rivets that held the plate @ 5:21, will be replace how. Love this series. I have reached an age, where I can not play anymore restoring a Marshall Roller. This is my therapy. Well done, Boys 'n girls. edit. The "Stay Tap", we have, has about a 8" lead, tapered reamer as the lead to the tap threads. The tap threads taper also is longer. Allows threading to be relatively easy. It could be just comparing with the video that is out, but a longer taper would definitely help.

Thanks Mark! They won’t be rivets. They will be patch screws. We did consider riveting the two new plates together first and then welding them in, but the general advice was that patch screws would be a better route to go. It’ll all be in one of the next films 😁

Hey up! Great video as always! As someone who is filming and building a 7 1/4” gauge loco I completely understand with how difficult it is to do both! Surely they didn’t hand drive those taps when they built that thing? Would it be possible to tap the plates on the radial arm drill then put the stays in as it went together?

How do you assure the old and new threads are aligning while tapping? I thought I've read somewhere that you should tap stayholes, in this case, from the inside to use the old threads as a guide and eliminate the risk of chewing them up

The tap has threads near the end that engage before it starts cutting the new threads on the outside.

@@sjv6598 so the threads on the inner firebox are of a smaller diameter than the ones on the outer firebox? Otherwise the major diameter of the tap wouldn't fit trough the minor diameter hole in the outer firebox to engage with the inner firebox threads. Or am I completely off?

So, I’ll go through that in detail in the next boiler film. But essentially there are no significant threads left on the firebox plate, the holes have been drilled the minimum size to clean them up. We are re-tapping all the holes, inside firebox included to the next size up. Then we are bespoke machining the new stays to an exact tight fit thread size on our Swiss CNC bar feed set up so that we can ensure they are a good tight fit into the boiler. 🙂
