The fact that Todd didn't know what was happening, and the gradual change of his facial expressions kills me. He goes from happy as ever, to looking confused, and then to sadness and being scared. The idea that you will never see the person you love again, even though they are alive, is perhaps even worse than having a loved one die.
@ryanridder45762 жыл бұрын
Ive been sad and crying sometimes nowadays about a girl I like that I may never see again and although I didn’t know this girl until almost a few years ago, I technically do feel like she is a loved one for me and I’m sad I may never see again so I feel like this similar scene, very sad

Yer I mean scenes, like Bambi's moms death and Mufasa's death are all sad and what not, but I think people need to know that in death there is freedom of some kind and thus no suffering on ones part, where in scenes like this where characters are forced apart because of a misunderstanding are more saddening, because in real life we all would fight to keep them together and Fox and The Hound is the saddest because there is no reunion after that.

After thinking about it, I realized something. This could be one of the more iconic tear jerkers in Disney movies, simply because no one died. Todd and Tweed were forced to separate solely for the former's safety. Think about this: Yes, deaths are incredibly sad, but other permanent forms of separation can feel equally as tragic. Tweed having to set Todd free is relatable to someone going into witness protection. You have to sever all ties with literally everyone you know, including your closest friends (and in some cases, family), you can never have any contact with them ever again. Which is as close to being dead as you can without actually being dead. And in some cases, you may have to literally pretend that the ones who went into WP actually are dead. But the worst part is you know they're still alive. You know that things can't be how they were, but somehow you can also feel the pain that they know the same holds true for them. And yet, it all happened for one reason: everyone's safety. Knowing someone's dead and gone and accepting it in time is one thing. But being forced to separate and essentially pretend they're dead or never existed, but knowing they're alive, is on another level. Similar things could be said to apply to other scenarios, like someone you love going to prison for life, or losing children through CPS investigations if you're innocent. Just a little food for thought. But after thinking about it, this is in my opinion what makes this scene particularly powerful emotionally.

Ok, let’s be honest. I’m a man and sometimes I want to cry… but I can’t. So, I’m here because I know of the one thing that will get me. Works every time.

It is my belief that one of the main reasons this scene is so sad and powerful is because of how universally flexible in how relatable it is, you can feel identified with either Tweed or with Tod or maybe even with both and whichever way you approach it... it will get to you. Most people tend to identify with Tweed. Anyone who's ever had to part from a beloved pet or has lost someone very close to their hearts, either by death or through separation brought upon by the circumstances in their lives will be able to understand and thus empathize with what Tweed is going through in this scene. However, if you've ever felt alone and/or abandoned or just simply hate loneliness, then you will identify with Tod. This particular aspect is accentuated in the ENTIRE film through perspective. This is also why we can also be affected by the fact that Tod and Copper can no longer be together and by extension why Tweed can't keep Tod anymore. Through his entire life Tod has been faced with loss and loneliness. It is his mother's death (and possibly father and siblings who may have died before the movie even started if you consider foxes are monogamous and give birth to liters) what left him alone and vulnerable, yet this is also how he got to be adopted by Tweed. It is loneliness what made Tod meet Copper and become best of friends. By the point in the movie when Tweed has to leave Tod in the woods, life has forced separation and loneliness once again on Tod, He can't meet with Copper anymore and Amos Slade wants him dead so badly, Tweed just can't keep Tod anymore. Seeing Tod's face you can see that he is confused, yet caring about his owner, then he is left alone, confused, sad and afraid while the old widow is left heartbroken and alone as well. All of these emotions and our knowledge of what happened before then add together to make this the saddest and most powerful moment in Disney films. As for me, I've felt what both of these characters have gone through, I've always hated loneliness ever since I have use of reason, I always were a crybaby whenever I was left alone when I was very little, over time I've met and been separated from a few friends very dear to me, I've lost beloved pets and close relatives, I've been abandoned by my father and I've developed a strong connection to my aging mother and I KNOW it will break my heart completely when the time comes to say goodbye, I guess this is why I identify far more with Tod than with Tweed, 'cause up until around this point in the film it all plays too close to home for me. This song however emphasizes the importance of our memories and our hearts, because it is true that nobody I've loved has ever left my heart and that's where they'll remain until the end of my days. Which is why I don't regret to say that I'm as of now a 26 year old guy and I've wept through this WHOLE movie from beginning to end, sparing those very few happy moments. It will always keep a close place inside my heart.

I had to say good-bye to my pets before I moved to Vancouver. I couldn't take them with me, because I wouldn't been able to afford for food and so on. It was especially hard to say good bye to my dog Muffin. I miss her. But she's happy living with my parents. After I left, my dogs would stay by the door waiting for me to come home. Especially Muffin. My bearded dragon wouldn't eat much till I got home. My birds wouldn't chirp till I came home. Whenever I came home for a visit, the house would be alive with happy pets.

I watched this movie again, some years after I lost my first cat. When I got to this scene, my emotions took over and I started crying. It reminded me so much of the last drive I had with my cat to the vet, where she was put down.

I had to one day take my dog since childhood to the vet to put him to sleep. He looked at me so happy and he was very lovable and leaned up beside me the whole way. He was 17. The whole ride to the vet this song played. As I tried my hardest not to cry I couldn't help it. I hugged him one last time and that was it. That was goodbye. And yes, it seems forever. But she will always be in my heart. We will meet again one day.
