As someone who used to work in media production I wouldn't read too much into them deciding not to air something. Cant tell you how many things I worked on that were shelved for a variety of reasons. I do however think this really does illustrate how much the news media today is designed to entertain and not to inform.

I buy and sell real estate in the American Midwest and in my area individual buyers don’t stand a chance due to investors. I tried to purchase a home in a new development recently and within the first week, the entire street was purchased, prior to the development being completed, and over asking price. Now, was this technically “Wall Street”? No. But there are many foreign investors, hedge funds and otherwise, that are buying literally everything that goes to market here. They create small component companies under an umbrella, so some appear as small investors, but are actually large, out of state financials. I have personally spoken with their employees and know this to be the case. I asked how they discover properties and make offers so quickly and one of them told me that they created an “algorithm” that bids on properties and makes offers based upon locations, price-point and other data. Just ONE of these investment companies told me that they are purchasing 2,000 homes in the area within the next year. That’s just ONE out of state investment firm, in a small, Midwest area. I’m not sure if these companies technically count as “Wall Street”. That may be where we’re taking past each other.

Thanks Graham. Good piece. I had a similar thing happen when interviewed for a major news group. We did the whole interview and we’re positive about certain things. They found someone else who was negative about those things and ran that story instead. If things are ok and sensibly explained, there’s no need to tune in tomorrow….. and that’s not good for their advertisers…. Or their revenue.

I think a big part of the reason they did not air your interview is that no one wants to hear that now is a bad time to buy a home. We’ve all bought into the narrative that home ownership is the first step to building wealth, and it’s hard for people to believe that renting can actually be more cost effective at times.

It’s not just Wall Street. There are many foreign buyers snapping up homes as well. And there are other types of Corporate buyers (not part of the Wall Street machine) that are also snapping up homes and outbidding regular everyday people.

My parents and a few other people I personally know sold their homes during the Covid era. Each were made a hefty offer and never met the buyer, nobody did a walk thru. Seemed to me that the seller just wanted the property. I do believe that this could be the case that was happening to a lot of folks and wasn't just something people echoed because of a Twitter thread.

It also would depend on your market. No investor is going to buy property in areas where they won't make their money back so you really do need to break it down. I do think some of the markets have suffered from the rise of airbnb thus the city regulators stepping in in places like NYC.
