Merkel declared that she would not run again about a year ago. (Although she would probably have won.) She kept moderately quiet in the election campaign, not using the power of her job to influence the election too much. When her party became second (in a 6 party parliament) by a narrow margin, she started taking Scholz to big international meetings, because it was expected that he would become the next Bundeskanzler. When she moved from her government office to a smaller one (which she can keep as long as she wants to), she declared that she will not publicly comment on politics, but she is always available for the next government to get help or suggestions. This woman has style.

We don't have to glorify her. Her party has consecutely been losing votes in every election (European parliament and on the state level). The candidate the CDU (her party) sent into running for chancellor weren't that popular und Party internal dissent made the party in total look like a total mess. Democracy in its current form in America is teetering on the brink. It is perfectly obvious that a huge swathe of the American voters are ready to embrace an Authoritarian figure. The cause? The manner in which successive administrations have allowed politicians to be swayed by big money. Multi National Corporations in search of bigger profits have corrupted the American body politic. Resulting in weak social programs and huge disparities in life chances in competing social and ethnic groups. DJT is not a cause. He is both a symptom and a product of system oriented too much toward profit. A practised wheeler and dealer, with little respect for law or order, he nourished his ego and greed for power by exploiting and capitalising on that which already existed. He pushed on a door, easily opened to welcome something nearer to the Chinese model. Probably with a watered down version of The Constitution for the sake of appearances. There will certainly be tougher rules and regulations on social media, free speech and demonstrations. Social conformity, and strong policing will be the name of the game with tough sentences for rule breakers and radicals. Perhaps that is what Americans wants.

The manner in which successive administrations have allowed politicians to be swayed by big money. Multi National Corporations in search of bigger profits have corrupted the American body politic. Resulting in weak social programs and huge disparities in life chances in competing social and ethnic groups. DJT is not a cause. He is both a symptom and a product of system oriented too much toward profit. A practised wheeler and dealer, with little respect for law or order, he nourished his ego and greed for power by exploiting and capitalising on that which already existed. He pushed on a door, easily opened to welcome something nearer to the Chinese model. Probably with a watered down version of The Constitution for the sake of appearances. There will certainly be tougher rules and regulations on social media, free speech and demonstrations. Social conformity, and strong policing will be the name of the game with tough sentences for rule breakers and radicals. Perhaps that is what Americans wants.

My crystal ball has been pretty accurate in the last few years, but it's not 100% spot on. As a German I was very surprised to see such a long segment on Germany and Stephen doing a great job pronouncing German words. If you'd make the vowels shorter (yes, consonants win) it would sound even better ;)

Isn't the tree a tradition stolen from Saturnalia or some other pagan holiday when the Church moved Jesus' birthday around to park it on top of someone else's holiday for marketing purposes? yup thats a pretty well documented history fact - though as the name suggests, the saturnalia are not pagan, but roman which at the time was very much a dominant religion and that move was to make it easier to convert people from the roman religion to christianity, because the people in power saw monotheistic religion as the more useful tool than a polytheistic one
