I think the training aspect was a good idea because you never know what can happen, but the bus should have been turned off, and the keys removed from the ignition.

I don't think it's wrong to teach the kids how to open the doors. But make sure the engine is not running and the handbrake is on. Definitely don't tell them how to use the clutch or shift gears. And, of course, first get parental consent.

If you have an employee that has a health issue that driver should have an adult escort trained to deal with any emergency that may occur.

I hear a lawsuit. I was a school bus driver and had an medical emergency but I parked the bus and called for another driver. I would never have any child in the driver's seat. All my students knew that if I was unable to drive they could pull the steering wheel to the side of the road and pull the air brake and use the radio to get help. Never in the driver's seat. They can call emergency number if needed they all have cell phones. So I don't know why they had any child in the driver's seat.

If you search "Student stops bus" on KZbin there is several videos that show cases where bus drivers have suffered random medical emergencies while driving and a student had to stop the bus. No school district has enough funding to additional staffing on buses just in case the 1% chance that the driver has a medical emergency.

There was a bus driver with no pre-existing health conditions that had a medical emergency. A boy came forward, pushed the brake and steered the bus to the side of the road. That was a boy who had farm experience.

The vast majority of school districts don’t have another adult on the bus. I can see special needs buses having an aide, like in my area, but there is absolutely ZERO need for any sides on regular school buses.

I trained my students to push the emergency brake button, which locks up all the wheels at once. That is all they needed to know.

I think this situation sounds alarming but is minor. The driver is likely up there in age and felt comforted empowering the students with knowledge. Better conditions should have been met for that noble purpose. Glad everyone is safe!

Anyone w/medical problems should not be allowed to do any job that can lead to danger periiod there are other professions. Im epileptic by the way and dont care. If u take a job like this and something happens u should be charged w/attempted murder

This reminds me when an airline pilot let a child in the cockpit to fly the plane only to crash the plane (not intentionally but accidentally). If an adult is going to let a child use transportation for practice, use some common sense like taking the key of the ignition or disable it so it doesn't cause any accidental harm.

It’s actually not uncommon for this to happen. Many students over the past several decades have had to take the controls, and stop the bus. I can think of a couple that recently happened in the past few years. To the parent who doesn’t feel comfortable with her child on a bus during an emergency, where another student is driving, get realistic. No one knows what he or she would really do if it was all on the line.

I'm a bus driver. I don't do it, and it's definitely not allowed.... but I know a lot of drivers will let the students play in the driver's seat while waiting to unload students.
