The bird, a moderately-sized Black Vulture, had demonstrated no belief whatsoever in a personal savior, and thus her next-of-kin wants everyone to know that, "She's dead now. She was alive, but that's no more. Deal with it." The bird's family, when asked, didn't even realize she was gone, and said, "To be perfectly honest, she's never here anyway." The bird, a five-year-old that, frankly, probably wouldn't have survived the winter anyway, was wanted for murder for pushing her sibling's egg out of the nest while she was a newborn, killing it instantly, just days before it would have hatched, something that is very common in the bird community. Many believe the bird may have committed suicide, but no note has been found. - j q t -

You can see one bird on the far left side and far right side and than another comes into view on the right. Was the bird sucked into the engine and displaced/fractured a blade? They do officially call it a 'bird strike'. All jet engines should be able to cut up birds into smaller pieces so it does not cause a complete engine failure. Why isn't a fighter jet have engines like the turbofan engines made by Rolls-Royce General Electric Pratt and Whitney and CFMI that are designed to not be a complete failure if struck by say...Canadian geese?
@carlpboyer
@carlpboyer 2 жыл бұрын
That bird looks like it might have been a vulture. Engines can only survive strikes from birds to a certain size. The T-45, unlike an airliner, is single engine so that is strike one. If the bird struck the intake or side of the aircraft causing more material to be ingested, that's strike two. They are already low and slow on approach, so even if the engine survives, it is not likely operating at max power any more - strike three.
@josephtovar1909
@josephtovar1909 2 жыл бұрын
Fighter aircraft have a low bypass engine which means most of the air that is sucked in is compressed by a several rows compression fan blades and forced into a combustion chamber. when fuel is introduced it combusts and the exhaust is used to power the fan blades and produce forward thrust. Each titanium fan blade is only about 1/8th of an inch thick and designed only to ingest air. Introduce anything other air into the intake and those fan blades will bend and rip from the core and shoot out, destroying anything in their way causing more fan blades to rupture and causing a domino effect known as “shellout”. As soon as the engine goes BOOM the aircraft falls from the sky like a rock due to the very little lift produced by fighter aircraft wings. -Your Friendly Neighborhood Crew Chief-

Those commercial airliner engines are high bypass - most of the air and thrust comes from air flowing around the outside of the compressor stages. Bird parts can bypass the engine. Some fighters are low bypass engines where most of the air goes through the full stack of compressors stages which means the poor birds tend to damage more of the vital components.
@lukelee7501
@lukelee7501 2 жыл бұрын
@@RealRavi Most turbofan engines on airliners today have a 12 to 1 bypass. But still a bird the size of a duck or goose will likely fod out these engines too if they get sucked into the intake...jet engines don't like to eat anything except air or water ,anything else gives it the hiccups for sure

Screens are used for ground turns (operating the aircraft on the ground for testing systems) but are not feasible for flight due to the amount of air that is cut off from just having a screen. It can reduce the airflow into the engine by more than 40%, and that is not something you want. Better off just hoping to not have a bird strike, as they're pretty rare.

If you're about to comment that "wow, how come a bird can take down a military plane? can't they do something about that?" Just stop. Go read about birdstrikes and birdstrike mitigation, spend a few hours reading about how jet aircraft work, spend a few more hours reading about incidents involving military aircraft and birdstrikes, and THEN come back and write your comment. Might be over-stating the price tag - tho admittedly it isn't cheap. There are also not too many bird-proof aircraft. You can get lucky. Sometimes it doesn't bring the plane down... but at jet speeds that's a lot of damage. Planes aren't built like tanks, or even cars - and they can't be or they won't fly. It (probably) wouldn't bring down an A-10 -but an A-10 isn't exactly a trainer and costs a lot more to operate.

How many times does this have to happen before they put cowling shields on planes? Like a conical screen with large mesh count that would defect an object like a bird away from the intake without impeding air flow. Seems pretty basic. It could even be retractable and only used at lower altitudes/on takeoff and landing.

then you will get a smashed metal mesh screen and dead bird sucked into the turbine....it is an amazing amount of force that happens, an aircraft traveling at plus 100 mphs and a good size bird smashing into it. If mesh screens could prevent it, those things would have been on jet intakes many moons ago.

I'm suggesting a cone with a small vertex angle thereby making the angle if incidence high enough to deflect the strike, not absorb it. You’re going from flying completely straight and normal to losing an engine at a thousand feet at low speed. There was about ~20 seconds between an emergency (which you can’t see coming) and the plane hitting the ground. In that time you’re troubleshooting, executing your EPs, and ultimately, making the (not insignificant) decision to eject AFTER you’ve exhausted all other options before you turn into a fireball. I promise, where the plane is heading is not something going through your mind in a situation like this. If the possibility of a plane potentially hitting your house is unpalatable to you, consider not living near the end of a runway.
