With all the news reports about school buses being off the road, I have to wonder if a major part of the problem is the US school bus system. The buses are bought and owned by the local School District, they have to have all the services, maintenance and costs paid for by the School District, along with the large support services and facilities the buses need. That's a lot of expense for buses that spend the majority of their time not being used because of the limited usage the buses get. Here, in Australia there is no dedicated school bus system like that, either government or commercial bus services provide dedicated school bus runs at the appropriate times and most of the buses are doing normal commercial operations at other times. The result is the costs are spread out over a much larger number of operational activities, and the services operate at a profit while most school runs operate at cost only. We don't have the issues of large numbers being out of service because the companies can't afford to have a lot of their fleet out of service, so they do a good job of maintenance on them. Overall, I suspect the problem in the US is due to a system with under utilized assets not earning their way while being looked after by overpaid bureaucrats resulting in a service that's too costly to function well.

Ernest Bywater A Lot of bus systems are operated by 3rd party company but it’s cheaper for a school district to run their own buses.

I used to be a teacher at East Paulding HS. Auto Shop. Why can you not have the ASE certified teacher's at the HS's start checking out, inspecting these bus"s that are behind, using the senior class to help with checking light's, taking the tires off and looking at the brakes, going under the bus, doing a inspection of the exhaust system, hangers, clamps, leaks, ects, is this too simple or too free???????

probably because they don't have the right union cards or don't work for the right government agency.

APS is a bus contractor as far as i can research, so their fleet wouldn't necessarily even be on school property and the buses not board owned.

Only ones who benefits are the private tow services. Especially with multiple calls per day.

This story should really be bigger than a volunteer parent doing all of the work. I'd like to see the money trail here. If there is not something crooked going on then there are just a lot of people who are horrible at their jobs. Btw, daughters bus is 30 minutes late today as I sit here waiting. Status update is, maybe one of two buses will pick her up. Haven't seen my daughters ACTUAL bus in almost two weeks.

Does mr. Franklin think naming every group that's concerned about this problem in anyway mitigates it? This is typical political speak. It's all about the government. You go into a Commercial Business and employees are expected to perform their jobs well. Or they don't have a job! Frankly these seem to be simplistic problems and simply require effort to be expended to correct them. Any quality manager that I have ever met would simply take off his suit coat go down in the garage is of these places and kick some butt. Although, part of it has to be unaccountable as far as I can see expenditures on what and how are things being done in the public school bus fleet. Are the mechanics that managers Etc Union employees? I asked that because their manttra seems to be a union manttra which is...... we are still looking for someone to blame! The gross negligence of these employees is mind-boggling. What efforts have been expended to correct these problems since they were first reported which seems to be quite a while ago? The answer appears to be... None

Its these new age school bus built in third world countries with shitty parts then shipped over here. Back in the old days school buses were American made and rarely broke down now things have changed they want cheaper and this is the result of cutting corners
