Uber, Lyft to leave Minneapolis by May 1 after ordinance passed

The Minneapolis City Council passed an ordinance that would give Uber and Lyft drivers a pay bump. This comes as both rideshare companies are threatening to leave the city on May 1 because of this ordinance.

These scammers are not going to leave , they make a lot of money charging customers $100 while paying the drivers$19 ,who do all the work and put gas in the car , have car repair and car depreciation , we have a lot of operation cost that this is not sustainable anymore ,while the apps keep 60% 80% of the fare , honestly drivers feel like we are just working to put gas in the tank and continue driving the next day , you would say why you don’t get another job ? If the ordinance is going to raise minimum wage for drivers to $50/hour, that's one thing, but if it is just going to give drivers status as regular employees rather than independent contractors, that's a different thing. Is it accurate that a RIDE FARE of say $50.USD, then approximately $20.USD goes into Uber management pockets. Then about $30.USD goes into the pocket of the Uber Driver who owns the car, pays the gasoline, and all the costs to run the car and maintain it, including a commercial insurance premium to protect the passengers and normal liabilities. Does this sound fair to the Driver and the passengers paying the high costs charged by Uber?

I mean. I always thought this was meant to be more of a way to earn a little money on the side not a full time job. That being said, all drivers are considered independent contractors, and they should be setting up business insurance so I would think that the decision to drive for uber is a business decision more so than an employment decision, and you should understand the risks involved with getting involved with the business. TO be fair though, the depreciation of your vehicle and all the maintenance and repairs probably completely outweigh the money you will make out of doing this, and I don't think Uber provides for any sort of reimbursements for maintenance/repairs. So Uber essentially has little to no risk in the business and all they do is sit back and rake in the money. So I think some sort of help to its contractors may be beneficial whether that be a minimum wage or reimbursements for maintenance, gas, repairs, or idk some sort of help with that. But then again, you as the driver should not go into business with Uber in the first place and if you're going to go thorugh getting business insurance might as well start up your own business and taxi service.

Commercial Insurance cost is biggest barrier to legal cash rides. The Feds, or any state or city can declare Rideshare a public utility, and provide drivers a state commercial insurance at reasonable cost that you can buy by day, week, month, or year; just like when you rent a car. This creates a legion of cash drivers and real competition for Uber & Lyft. The miracle of competition will LOWER rider cost & RAISE driver pay AND expand the market & services. The Uber Lyft monopoly is the problem and the ability of independent contractors to set the price.

The business model that has become the "gig" companies is falling apart. Without standardized pricing and realistic compensation the future looks to be in question. To achieve standardized pricing, companies will need to adjust how they calculate driver fares and pay. One important change will require drivers to adjust as well. Current mileage/fares are calculated from a drivers location. To achieve standardized pricing, companies will need to calculate rates from pickup to destination. Drivers could opt in for an acceptable mileage radius from their location (2,5,10,20..etc).

I used to drive for Uber Eats, and the pay is terrific, well in excess of $15 bucks an hour, because I could pick and choose the orders I take...that is a contractor by definition...not an employee.
