no. this is horrible. commercial fishing damages ecosystems and if it doesn't stop, at this rate, by 2050 the ocean will be empty. additionally, commercial fishing leads to a lot of bycatch.

A friend of mine used to work on fishing boats he would go out on a unmaintained and leaky 32ft fiberglass boat from the 80s (no freezer just a big cooler), and every week it had to be towed back to the fish house or the bilge pump would go out. But he somehow was the best out of the about 30 men on 7 boat. And they used 100 pound boxes and where it was grouper they could up to 450 each.

I used to work with Alaskan fishing boats, from 20' mom and pop boats up to 300-400'. I've been on America's Finest a couple of times, it actually looks like this. It's way cleaner and fancier than most other fishing boats.

This is sickening! How many pounds of "bycatch" is killed for every pound of yellowfin sole they catch? This super trawler is depleting everything in its path all for that mighty dollar. The light at the end of the tunnel is the better they do the quicker they will put themselves put of business.

@Robert Campbell he made a point about bycatch which is a real and pressing issue. It's the reason why vessels are required to have an observer on board to monitor bycatch. Catching other fish and invertebrates can have a cascade effect on the ecosystem and food chain which is why it is so important. I'm a marine fisheries and biology major.

This type of fishing is the reason for so much of the coral reefs dying it’s horrifying so many species are on the verge of being extinct in the ocean but no one cares because we can’t see them.

Ships like this are the reason why "tried and true" fishing spots turn out to be empty of fish. They suck up all the ones there leaving none behind to replenish stocks.

They can only fish, so many days a year, they're not doing this every single day, they aren't allowed to do this during breeding season, just like crabs, lobsters, and shrimp, they only get so many days a year to do this, just so they all have a chance to breed and grow, like shrimp, crabs, and lobsters, they can only keep a specific size, if it's a ¼ of inch below, they get tossed back in. There's a reason why fish and game exist, if you caught fishing 10 minutes before open season, you can get a huge fine and your stuff taken, same for after, if you're caught doing this 5 minutes after the close of the season, you'll be fined and your stuff taken. Trust me, it's all regulated, unless you're Chinese, they don't care and don't have restrictions like we do, and most countries that do commercial fishing

@@lynnleigha580 In case you missed it, there was no measuring going on in that ship. They dumped the fish onto conveyors and chopped off their heads before a single hand touched them for sorting. Trawling doesn't distinguish between the fish you want and the fish you don't. It literally scoops up every living thing on the ocean floor. They didn't sort by species until after the fish passed through the heading machine, so no, they aren't measuring for legal size and they aren't limiting themselves to the fish in season.

Mike Rowe has great content...there are millions of us that work with our hands for a living & make good money. Kids need to understand this lol. Most of us have worked since we were youngsters, it’s better than college for many people. We own houses, travel, have families etc. The American dream! In my opinion the best thing you can do for a kid is to get him working by the age of 13, whether he goes to college or not

@@John77Doe A parent sets their kid up for success, most kids will work for somebody and maybe even in an office… But there’s a good percentage of kids that would like to work with her hands. The good thing is those kids, like me are able to get more life experience, better jobs and be independent. Ive worked in everything from fishing to owning my own business… Ive worked at offices, boat docks, restaurants & in other countries… Etc. I’m telling you, getting your kid into the workforce as quick as possible will help them to understand work ethic, the value of money and they will get in the real world experience. The college thing is ridiculous, you should only go to college for something where a degree is needed to be able to get into that specific field, otherwise you’re better off working your way up from the bottom… The reason being is that you are expendable and with the industry changes you can guarantee you will be changing your job every 2 to 5 years when the company automates or there’s a merger… Not to mention you all a lot in student loans most likely.

Only thing that I hate is I will see dozens of these boats pulling flounder for market but we as surf fisherman can only keep a slot fish for one month out of the year in NC. We have been throwing back about 100 flounder per trip since these rules as by catch with about 10% dying from swallowed hooks. But the people with rods are to blame for over fishing somehow still.

Most oceanic flatfishes taste awesome including the popular halibut flounder or sole. Sanddab a type of sole is also excellent. Plenty of Dover soles in the northwestern pacific too. But when I looked into the latest Orange Roughy quota n status environmentalists either say they are depleted threatened or at risk of extinction or undesirable for consumption due to high toxin levels; PCB mercury etc. I hope they make up more than losses to recoup to pay skipper expenses fuel etc with successful catches of yellowfin soles.

Modern fisheries science allows us to harvest large amounts of fish every year without hurting fish stocks. Alaskan waters are very well managed ans have been since the 1950s and they continue to harvest vast quantites without impact to the population. Seas in some parts of the world and in the past were and are overfished, but well managed fisheries like the one in Alaska can provide in perpetuity. These boats have extremely strict quotas from the state and federal government to ensure the populations stay healthy. Luckily in US waters fish are doing very well. I can't speak for other parts of the world.
