I bet Canada would have loved to have the opportunity to underfish before their cod fishery collapsed and still hasn't recovered even though they have had a TOTAL ban on fishing for decades now. Same goes for the sardine fishery that was once sustained many fishing communities on the California coast. It is a little too late to decide to underfish to save a fishery when fish stocks have collapsed. If collapsed fisheries have taught us anything it should be that the precautionary principle should dictate every decision we make about maximum sustainable yield.

Over fishing for a particular fish is only part of the problem. For instance the striped bass pop on the east coast was decimated. Now they restricted fishing with bag and slot limits. One of the main things that helped though was the restriction on Omega 3 fishing boats. These boats catch the fish that stripers eat. If you ever came across one of the boats it would make you sick. You could follow the slick and trail of bycatch to the boats. Where there are menhaden, mackerel,herring, sardines and similar there are stripers and many times there were hundreds if not thousands of dead stripers every day from one boat. One day we saw over a dozen dead 40 plus lb class fish. These boats also had an effect on salmon, tuna and other fish that eat these fish. We pushed for years to restrict these boats and until we started filming it and posting videos did they finally restrict them. Most of the help came from local and national news, they were surprised this was happening right in their back yard

Did they say Chinook salmon were at healthy populations?!?! From epa- Declining Trend Salish Sea Chinook salmon populations are DOWN 60% since the Pacific Salmon Commission began tracking salmon abundance in 1984. Between 2000 and 2018, the total number of Chinook returning to the Salish Sea has shown a relatively stable trend. However, during this time period, we also see a modest increase in catch and a modest decrease in fish returning to spawn, particularly over the last few reporting years.

If you listened to the video they were talking about east coast stocks. Your stocks have been getting better due to the removal of dams that blocked the water ways where the fish have to travel to reproduce and due to hatcheries. Part of the problem is also the 'fish farms' that raise Atlantic Salmon in western waters, the pollution from this farms is astounding and hatchery fish don't reproduce

Right, as a recreational fisherman my whole life I can attest to the harm modern fishing methods have caused to local fish populations. Gov needs to rip off the bandaid and cut commercial fisheries off for 10 years to allow natural balance to re-establish and for scientists to properly gage what amounts can be caught “sustainably”.

“Stocks are called overfished if they're at low abundance, but stocks are often at low abundance, not because they're fished too hard, but because the environment has changed.” That is a nonsensical statement. If the environment causes a lower abundance, but fishing fails to decline accordingly, then the stocks are being overfished. If this guy is unable to understand the fact that the two cannot be separated, then everything else he says is suspect.

Claiming the U.S. fishing market is at an all time high is misleading. While that is true in terms of dollar revenue, it is NOT true in terms of fish populations, and fish density. Records have been kept since the 1800's which measure the tonnage of fish caught based on the size (area of a net) and the miles of ocean swept with it. This yields tonnage to volume of ocean swept with a net. THAT metric is more relevant than dollars, and THAT metric has drastically declined. Stating "The U.S. Seas are Underfished" is a very dubious claim

The only difference is one pipeline not being built, which was a completely unnecessary one that would bring absurdly expensive to refine shale oil to us. There’s a reason fracking is nowhere near as big as it was in the early 2010s, it costs ~$120/barrel to refine shale oil, so prices must remain high to make it a viable source, otherwise the taxpayer is footing the bill in subsidies. This is the same reason Venezuela’s economy collapsed in 2015 and onwards as oil prices lowered, while the Gulf states both in the Middle East and US were perfectly capable of chugging along.

I only came here because of the caption. WTH is "underfished"? Fish populations all over the have declined drastically. Even sharks that we do not eat(at least where I'm from) are still seeing decline in population. Sturgeon, salmon, cod, tuna, etc, all have faced great decline.

Oh I don't know if I agree with the premise of this expose. Am I to believe that the issue of rate of harvest has been solved. having worked for National Marine Fisheries Service a degree in fisheries aquaculture URII. Several questions come to mind. Such as the overall trophic profile of our oceans biological community When investigating the northeast coastline as the metric for oceanic health (its all inextricably linked) it sure doesn't look and behave like it used to.

Is under fishing a bad thing? Sounds like it would lead to having more fish next year.
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 2 жыл бұрын
I also would have liked a better clarification on that. But best I can tell, underfishing will lead to more fish next year, but not by enough to overcome the shortage now. Imagine a graph showing the amount of fish caught over the long-term. If you catch no fish ever it'll be zero, if you catch every last fish it will also go to zero, and in between the graph will make something of a rainbow shape. Overfishing and underfishing just describe which side of the peak you're on. Technically unless you nail it down to the kilo then you're somewhere slightly on one side or the other. But no one can measure this stuff very well so it's not that tight in practice. It's definitely better to be on the under side though, since you still get the same amount of fish (long term) as being over, but the excess goes to feed the rest of the ecosystem like sharks.

There's an interesting article about fertilizing the ocean with iron ore. Seems it can jumpstart the food chain from the bottom up. An experiment dumped iron ore dust into the deep ocean and saw a huge increase in fish the following year. Imagine if ships crossing the oceans had bags of ore slowly pouring out as they cross back and forth. Nutrient flow from rivers has drastically slowed as dams,cities and farms use much of the once mighty rivers of the world. Much iron ore comes from Australia and goes to China. Replenishing the ocean just on that route could help all the countries in the area. Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand,Japan, Korea, Cambodia and even Micronesia and Polynesian islands all could benefit. On the flip side real serious thought should be given to harvesting krill,small fish and even squid. Large commercial factory boats can deplete the base of the food pyramid and affect everything down the line. Much of it is ground up for plant fertilizer and pet food. If you want to eat yummy bigger fish you gotta leave the bait fish alone.

I’d like to see them try that in the Great Lakes, as lake huron had an ecosystem collapse about 20 years ago caused by filter feeding zebra mussels destroying the base of the food chain causing small shrimp and invertebrates then baitfish then large predator fish populations to all collapse

@@nickolaibuck9301 Gotta deal with those pesky zebra mussels. Start a rumor that they're good for virility like oysters. They'll be wiped out in no time. Seriously I wonder if a man made red tide could stop them. Just add fertilizer. Do it during the spawning cycle. Keep changing the water height to mess with them. Draw it down for a year so they're high and dry then flood it so they're too deep.

@@kanding3369 Iron ore replicates the sediments that used to flow into the oceans from countless rivers. The sediments in these rivers are now blocked by dams,diversions,pipelines and harbors,marinas and breakwalls. Less water is flowing because we use it all up. The little that flows doesn't have the velocity to carry larger particles or carry any far out to sea. This is good science and started when divers noticed more diverse life growing on steel shipwrecks compared to wood and fibreglass wrecks. Fertilizing does sound bad because of land based chemical fertilizer and algae blooms. Consider it organic fertilizer... nutrition. The life associated with the iron is different. It's beneficial, restorative and likely will eat the red tide bad plankton in the process. For over fifty years I have dived,surfed,boated,slept and fished out of the ocean. Imagine if we only had the wheat,corn,rice and veggies that grew naturally without and fertilizer, without planting seeds even. Just taking. That's how we treat fish and the ocean.

@robwerth

@@Dimitris_Half It would be a long elaboration. But for example, take salmon farming in Canada and the US. The Fraser River mouth has numerous salmon farms. Those fish are penned unnaturally in dense schools and this is an unhealthy situation for them. They have a high level of sickness and the pathogens from these fish blow off into the surrounding waters, sickening any wild salmon that pass. Been documented. To deal with the pathogens in the pens, the water is heavily dosed with drugs. The drugs blow into the surrounding waters and residue remains in the flesh of the fish. I've served on a research vessel that had divers researching these issues and seem the pictures that were brought back of these sick fish, the lesions clearly visible. Because their diet is unnatural, their flesh doesn't turn pink without the addition of a dye to their feed. And now this is the worst part. Salmon are a carnivorous fish. The pellets that they are fed are harvested by trawling the oceans, killing everything in the path of the nets, and turning the catch into pellets. Massive amounts of hydrocarbons are released into the atmosphere, and this a massively inefficient way of feeding the fish compared to wild fish which hunt for their food. The idea of aquaculture sounds great at first blush but in reality it is a disaster backed by lots of lobbying and cash spread about to the right politicians. There's more to be concerned about (like over harvesting of wild catch, genetic poisoning, etc.), but that's a long story. Bottom line: all is not well on the seas. See also Sea Shepherd, featured briefly, but unnamed in part of this report www.fraserriverkeeper.ca/net_pen_salmon_farming
