Look for the VIN number stickers on the front fender aprons and in the rear hatch/trunk channels, making sure the numbers are the same. Also look for waviness in these areas that might indicate previous accident damage.

I have a 92 LX with 38,000 original miles . The car only gets used in the summer for shows., so it sits in the garage for at least 4-6 months out of the year. Because of this , I find myself having to replace parts just from lack of use . Air bag module , oil pressure sensor, fuel pressure regulator, the window & lock switches ..just to name a few. so even if you take care of it , the parts will eventually fail just from age alone . one of the pitfalls of lack of use.

First thing I look at when they claim low miles with a 5 digit odometer, if they’ve been flipped over 100,000 they usually don’t line up evenly, they will be all high low high low the more they flip the more they should show a flop :)

Here are the major indicators, if run hard and put away wet: Look at A-pillars (windshield supports), they are known to crack under the paint and can be seen in good light. Look at the B-pillars for twist/warpage from the front and rear. This is a unibody car and with 300 ft/lbs. of factory torque can twist itself apart. Look at the firewall under the hood for a crack. With a convertible, take it on a smooth road, and if the hood dances (cowl) shake then the unibody has been beat on hard, with no roof-line to hold it all together (alignment issues). Finally. look at the torque boxes where the suspension trailing arms are bolted to the underside of the body in the rear; if you see them torn, cracked or pulling away then the car has seen a number of hard launches. If you find one that has been driven sparingly and you intend to drag or autocross, you NEED FIRST to put a strut tower brace on it and good quality full length sub-frame connectors to keep the body from twisting and cracking; this is even more important on convertibles. If you see the issues mentioned and (I have) you may want to look around... Good luck...

All unibody cars will eventually crack at normal stress points. Even 68-70 road runners and chargers etc get small cracks around the windshield etc. Fox body mustangs are 30 years old it’s bound to happen.

I'm looking to buy a 1985 SVO. I've already heard one thrashing itself to death ticking like a clock. There's a 1985 model in California but it's advertised as a V8. The rear shows an SVO logo below the single spoiler (not the SVO's double spoiler) and you can see a cobra logo on the left lower front quarter panel just behind the front wheel opening. Custom tailights. I don't think I like it, this is to be an investment I can drive. I have property sale closing soon, then lots of time and money to find what's right. Can't wait for a restoration as I'm already 70. I thought SVO's all came in white, grey, or black?

I'm sorry the first thing you should have looked at is the speedometer 100% of any original speedometer and I've had many Fords all the numbers all the way across on the speedometer and on the odometer will be 100% precisely no deviation in a straight line. Once they rollover the 99,999.9 whether it's it's in miles on American or kilometers on a Canadian car or if someone rolled that speedometer back and they've got to be really really good to get those numbers back in line again 100%( and it's not like there's a lot of guys that are capable of doing this and the ones that are good are far and few between and costly) if they're not all straight that's the first indication that the odometer is on its second way around or someone has attempted to roll the speedometer back in the cases where there is an extra digit in the odometer. That's the first place to look if the numbers aren't straight don't even bother looking at it anything else that car is on its second possibly third or more odometer roll over, or it has been turned back. And I seen where even that's not 100% foolproof I've ran into people thad told me they've replaced their whole instrument cluster with one that they found out of another car that they were lucky enough to find at a scrapyard somewhere that had been totaled early on and it's life when it still has low mileage and correct numbers on the odometer, but those are far and few between the chances finding a Car where this procedure was performed is be like being struck by lightning.And then there is disconnecting the speedometer cable. Once you visually verify that the odometer numbers are straight then carry on with the rest of these procedures. but most of these procedures can all be circumvented by replacing, foggy headlights pitted windshields beat up seats carpeting door pins and all those other indicators of high mileage cars. It's always worked for me

@jpp9846
@jpp9846 5 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing, the oldest "aero" fox is approaching 32 years old. With a "5 digit" odometer, it's absolutely, most likely, rolled by now. The mileage on these cars were/are way too easy to mess with. It's very hard to believe any of these cars are sub 100k. I don't believe the seat test either, the passenger side may not have been riden in much. I may be wrong, but didn't the GT's came with the seats that had the extensions for under the thighs of the driver/passenger? The GT in the video 06:50 doesn't have them? This would tell me, they are aftermarket and been replaced, no? Anyway, with all the parts/paint/suppliers available today, it's hard, very hard to be sure what your getting. I'd say if the panels still line up & carry the vin's, the interior is not totally ragged out and the engine runs good and hasn't been modified beyond an exhaust and possibly an intake/cold air, it's "probably" a good car. There are other areas, if it has sub frame connectors, that's a good sign...being these are unibody cars, prone to flex. Check the pillars for cracks or bubbling...this is a sign of a body already flexed. Strut tower rust at the base, is a killer in these war horses. Mechanically things that will cost you a little time or money (or both), rear main seal leaks...very common. Look between the tranny and engine plate. Rack and pinions, Water pumps & heater cores go too. If these things were replaced, big 👍. I'm certainly not a know it all, but these are the things I'd look at, HARD, before purchasing a fox body mustang.
@nothanks5652
@nothanks5652 5 жыл бұрын
seats changed over the years the pull out thigh support ended in 91. Most of the things in the video can be fixed on the cheap, I've seen plenty of cars claiming low miles that you could tell where cleaned up trying to hide its past.. For me a huge red flag is someone who has owned a lot of them selling off low mile cars for high prices. They tend to be the people who have the parts to clean them up and look for suckers. It helps when you know all the little changes ford did over the production span of these cars but the easiest to spot is the wrong year seats in the car. For me if the body/chassis has to be good and its price ok its a good buy, I'm not a collector looking for profit so miles mean little to me. Plus a stock fox body gets boring as hell and I've owned way too many of them.
@corvettejimmy3323

I am the owner of the 93 and Those are the original seats; 92-93 sport seats do not have the slide-out thigh bolsters that the 87-91 models had. I believe this was done as a cost cutting measure, since the fox platform production was winding down. Another feature that disappeared was the large headrests from 87-90 cars. Lincoln mark vii LSC’s (the king fox platform car) had these two features vanish in 91 also. Last but not least, they went to a simpler tweed fabric without the colored horizontal detail stitching in 91 also- hope this helps!

@@nothanks5652 thanks for the clarity on the seats. I did not know Ford omitted that "thigh slide" from the seats. @corvettejimmy I wondered about the headrests on the seats too. Some great tips for a newer fox hardtop. I have an 85 GT convertible with 35k. Mint never restored or screwed with that I'm going to be selling. What are some things I can point out to prove it's authenticity to potential buyers?

Personally, I don't get the "everything has to be original" thing on cars this old. I mean, even if the interior appears to be in decent shape, it's still going to be old, and vulnerable to tears and deterioration when you touch it. Usually it's going to have a less than fresh smell, etc. I recently looked at a 67 Camaro that was all original, and in decent shape for its age. But to make it pristine, you STILL have to touch just about everything about it. So in other words, I would have rather found one in bad shape and saved the money up front. Unless someone preserves these old cars in a vacuum, they're still going to need restoring.

Hey man me and my dad are picking up a 1988 gt 5.0 mustang and it’s gonna be a project car for me but the thing is it’s been sitting there for almost 20 years and the interior is still fine and beautiful nothing wrong there it’s obviously used but not worn out or anything and there is a lot of stuff wrong with it mostly because it hasn’t ran in forever, any tips?

What i look for when buying a fox body....#1) Pop the trunk or hatch and inspect the lip for rust,then check around the key hole for rust...#2) Open both doors all the way,then lift up on the doors to see if they have any sag in them,If they sag, replace the hinges...#3) Inspect the bottom lip on both doors for rust...#4)Pop the hood and inspect the fender bolts to see if the car was hit in the nose,also check the frame rails...#5) Check the driver seat to see if it has a twist in it from a fat f*ck leaning to the right...#6) Check the headlight switch... #7)When doing a tune up,make sure you use ford motorsport parts...PS..Don't skip the spark plug on the passenger side against the firewall, it's a bitch because of the header, but just do it...#8) Check to see if the heater core hose has been by passed...#9)Put the car on a lift and check the torque box's...#10) Inspect the lip on the wheel wells for rust...#11) If you have a T5 and it has a problem shifting into second gear ,it's probably a synchro issue. But also check the clutch cable to see if it has been stretched out....#12) After taking the car on a nice long test drive,shut the car off and pop the hood then spin the fan blade,if it spins freely without resistance the the clutch fan is shot....#13) If you have any cooling issue's,replace the thermostat with a high flow 180 degree one..PS. Make sure you scrape off all of the old gasket before replacing the water neck,also take your time when tightening the two bolts on the water neck,The water neck will split if the bolts are over tightened........My current gt convertible has a canvas top and is slammed on chrome ponies , saleen whale tail, lx tail lights,shortened antenna,stalker front bumper,step down rear bumper...Good luck on finding a clean stang everyone...

I'm going to say anywhere from 3,000 to 5000 your going to get a beater that's going to need a lot of work anywhere from 6000 to 12,000 you're going to get an old man's car that's in good shape and anywhere from 12000 to the Moon you're going to get something somebody built the shit out of is probably really fast but won't suit you

blaine pond you fucking nailed it, I just bought a 1988 foxbody notchback and my price range was from $3,000 to $6,000, I ended up getting it for $3,700 & it for sure needs body work and other shit but for the price I got it for I think it was worth it

@@leonelchavarin1168 yes I am praying to stumble into a 92 notchback no power windows or power locks good luck there but I keep looking and my standards keep dropping back to a hatchback I don't want all that glass I like the idea of a trunk and I don't much care for the GT because I like the big stainless exhaust coming out from the back tire all the way to the back of the car from the side profilegetting to the point where I'll buy what I can buy and make what I can make out of it
