It's perfectly human and grounded, which is sometimes dark and depressing. I thought it was a light yet somber tone throughout the entire film which made it amazing and made the ending more shocking and heartbreaking.

What I never understood is why can't Dave just say that "John has been a great help to everything and we couldn't have done it without him" the fact is this man's resources did help a lot with what was going on at the time. he was basically privately sponsoring US wrestling at the Olympics.
