Games in big trouble. Dillon is a lawyer first and foremost. Hes worried about legal action. Just set the rules and get current players to sign a waiver on head injuries. Make sure doctors are on top of it, medical retirements. Suspension for bad actions. Move on.

@samantha-jane4424 2 ай бұрын
@@imalwaysrightexactly, waivers are unlikely to hold up in court, and anything written into a contract still cannot circumvent the law of the land, which would arguably rule that the AFL as an organisation has a duty of care to the players if employs. This would probably come under both federal and state occupational health and safety law. People do need to accept the scenario of either having a financially viable game and accepting that things will change, or accepting a game burdened, potentially even crippled by the financial implications of the lawsuits that have already started, and will no doubt continue to increase.

Why isnt anybody bringing up HOW HARD THE GROUNDS ARE ?!?!? Is it because it's the only thing the AFL and its stadiums custodians are actually in control of? Grass must be half concrete if players are getting concussed from these impacts. I played local AFL for 10+ years, hit my head on the ground all the time and never got a concussion.
@christianhendry7136
@christianhendry7136 2 ай бұрын
Totally agree!!! The grounds are like concrete and there is so little grass coverage because they are going for esthetics on tv. Go back a couple of decades when there was more grass coverage and you had less concussion and ACL injuries. I'd love to see a study on the amount of these injuries at the state league level where the grounds are more lush/heavier tracks. They also generally don't share those grounds with cricket. I'm pretty confident that the would be less of these injuries on those grounds

@StuAus
@StuAus 2 ай бұрын
Its all about trying to prevent further law suits. They dont care if it ruins the game, they care about getting sued. Which is understandable because every bloke whos ever been concussed is looking for a pay out. Maybe players need to sign a waiver accepting the risk of concussion and acknowledging the AFL is not to blame.

@samantha-jane4424 Surely, though, there would be an implied risk. This isn't a normal workplace. The waivers I signed specifically detail that the sport poses serious risk of injury or death. This was for Speedway racing. I've never heard of a lawsuit in any motor sport.

@@Power_Prawnstar occupational health and safety law, the rights, responsibilities and duty of care don't really change. These are risks that can be mitigated. At the end of the day, if nothing is done to address concussions, the AFL will face even greater litigation and there won't be a game at all potentially. Players and the AFL need to sit down and come to some form of middle ground as to where we go now, but there will be change and people do need to accept that. We know a great deal more now about concussion, CTE and brain injury and the life-long effects it can have.

This was set up years and years ago when the intent of the player became secondary to the end result. Somebody gets injured so there must be somebody to blame. We are not far from suspending players who fly for a mark and make contact to another player. Was it Maynard last year got suspended when he jumped up to smother and landed awkwardly? Will Day a couple of years ago ran into a stationary Max Gawn (I think it was Max, my memory isn't great) and Max got suspended because Day was concussed. (I am a Hawks fan) I can make the same stupid argument if a player does a hammy because he is getting chased too fast. After all if he didn't choose to chase then the player wouldn't have had to over extend himself. There will be no more injuries once we ban tackling, jumping, running marking and kicking. We could take turns at having shots at goal to see who wins.
@ironmaidentragic
@ironmaidentragic 2 ай бұрын
So if the player that is being tackled contributes to the dangerous tackle in an attempt to win a free kick, which is what's happening and they get concussed, does the tackled player face suspension for contributing to his own concussion? Has any player been suspended for a dangerous tackle where no concussion has occurred? Or are we suspending players for the injury and not the intent?
@SpartanSteve-bq4ue

I don’t think any player would get concussed just to get a free kick then miss games with concussion and suffer later in life . Maybe trying to break the tackle could result in concussion but not on purpose as you suggest

If the AFL wants to make it easy for interpretation, and sanitise the game, they should include in the rules the statement “The players’ primary focus MUST AT ALL TIMES be the ball, NOT the man” This clearly defines a line for tackling and the paying of a free kick against the tackling or bumping player if their primary focus is not the ball. It basically removes the arms-pinned, holding the ball free kick because the focus is the man, not the ball. Whilst this is not what we all want, it would lower the incidence of heavy bumps and tackles applied without focus on winning the ball. This sort of statement is easy to understand and is something to which umpires, players and coaches could quickly adapt.

From a PR perspective its about protecting the player, in reality its about protecting the AFL cash. The only reasonable action is an impossibility and unless they have examples of what reasonable is then its not unreasonable. If they want to have a reasonable factor put up or shut up and admit its the cash not player protection thats driving this uncertainty.
@williamporter2867
@williamporter2867 2 ай бұрын
Most sporting codes where the head it at risk the head is protected by headwear. The AFL will not take the proper action to protect its players by introducing head wear. If they were really serious that is the first point of call for them to look at but they would rather change the fabric of the game than look at protection wear. Clubs should be proactive and introduce headgear protection for their players. You can't take head clashes out of the game so introduce preventative measures or change the ball to a round ball and play Irish not Aussie rules.

I think it was 2021 or 22' they had the opening month or so of footy and were suspending based on the action (it was sling tackles at the time) and it worked well, most people on the same page, you sling tackle you're out regardless of outcome. Then somewhere halfway through that season, they completely flipped it back to their usual outcome based system, and it just turned the whole thing into a laughing stock.

I can’t believe King is calmly saying the tackle is going as if it’s 1) inevitable 2) necessary. Society has a fetish with “health and safety”. This is what happens when women are listened to too much. It’s the maternal instinct that gave us lockdowns, but as it turned out it was also deranged to believe you can prevent a virus. Similarly, it is delusion to believe you can eradicate head knocks in football. There are certain values that eclipse “safety”. The reason football is loved is because it is heroic. There is nothing heroic about staying safe. Do we think Homer was immortalised in a myth because he stayed safe?

This is nothing but sensationalising crap.The slam your opponent into the ground tackle has snuck into the game.Back in the late sixties, seventies and early eighties, when I played.A period most would agree was nastier than todays footy is.In those days, if you wanted to hurt an opposition player, you hit him with a hip and shoulder.Of course, the hip and shoulder tackle was always a risk because he could dodge and you could end up hitting the fence, going A over T or making a fool of yourself.And if you missed, he still has possession of the ball.The other option and better choice for your team was to wrap your arms around him for a holding the ball decision or a ball up.There was no need to slam him into the ground.
