As someone who grew up in Huntington Beach, this is just heartbreaking 😢🥺💔 I remember one time I nearly drowned by a wave that came down over me. I was brought further out into the ocean by the current and kept being pushed down by the wave. Luckily I was with a lot of people and someone swam over to me to bring me to shore. I have jumped from the balboa pier in Newport when I was 17. Went to the end and jumped off. My friends filmed it. I though I was the coolest guy ever to think of it and do it! After that, I began the LONGEST swim of my life back to shore. Part way through, I felt like I was going to drown with no life vest or anything. By the time I reached the shore, I was so exhausted I couldn’t even stand or breathe. The lifeguards read me the riot act and pointed out all the signs to not jump from the pier. I said I was so sorry and would never do it again. That was the closest I ever came to dying and I remember it vividly. And I was a good swimmer at 17! I’m very sad for these 2 people. Being 34 now, I can only imagine how they felt being in that water. 😢

I like the way this piece was put together. It didn't just report on the death of one but also touched on the danger of jumping off of a pier when it is clearly marked prohibited but obviously strong seas are not to be misjudged. The interview with the surfer who took part in the rescue said what needed to be said.. without ridicule, *respect the ocean and realize the dangers* of jumping off of the pier. At least the young woman was saved but the guilt and sorrow she must feel. Condolences to the family.

This entire tragedy could have been avoided if these siblings followed the instructions on the pier sign. 💔 Thank you to the two surfers who so heroically and selflessly did everything in their power to save both of their lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the sister, her family, and the two surfers that came to their aid. I hope that the surfers can let go of guilt and instead be at peace knowing that they did all that they could do to try and save both siblings’ lives. Rest in peace. 💗

It was only the sister that intended to jump in. He only did it to save her. It clearly states no diving off the pier. I wonder if anyone tried to talk her out of it. It was disgusting to hear the crowd cheering after she jumped. It seems like the crowd supported her decision. If so, they should be held accountable. All for what? Fame on YT etc?Very, very tragic all around.

From the LAT story and photos, I got a better understanding of what might have happened. Yes, I agree with everything you both said here. There's a reason signs are posted, but people choose to ignore them w/tragic consequences. This is why I re-took Lifeguard Training 30 yrs after the first time, just in case it's needed, but I can only hope I don't overthink situations and instead react as these surfers did. One of them, Landon, is also a trained lifeguard, and I'm sure this incident is upsetting to him.

The brother only jumped in to try to save his sister who made a horrible decision by not reading the pier sign and or taking it seriously... if you have a sibling and they were struggling, I'm sure you would do the same thing... atleast I would..

Very hard to save a drowning person, most of the time they take their saviors with them.. i hope he doesn't feel responsible at all, there is a reason why its prohibited. The surfer did not have to witness that, be better everyone.

Very risky to save someone panicking in water. You cannot communicate clearly and once they grab a hold of you, they are not letting go, they will try and climb on top of you... if they don't come down quickly, you'll be fighting for your own life. It is not that they are selfish or evil it is natural human response to drowning. Kudos to surfer.

Back in 95 or 96 I want to say it was 95 Naples Florida there was a hurricane on the way the oceans were rough the pier was under renovations I thought it would be a good idea to swim underneath the pier between the pylons and such the waters were rough they immediately started slamming me towards the pilings that were covered in sharp barnacles. Long story short always think before you go into any water I was young and dumb at the time thankfully I was able to fight my way out of there for my life I climbed up the sharp barnacle covered pilings all the way up to the pier there were boards missing cuz it was under renovations I was able to crawl right up through there luckily. My buddy said when he saw me emerge I was covered in blood thankful to be alive.

I'm from Huntington Beach and surfed the pier area for years. We were even known to jump off the pier a time or two. That was in the 60s and I was still a teen. People have no idea about what it takes to swim with heavy currents and rip tides. Huntington has a serious current! I can feel for these people but they had no clue. I have taken off in front of station 4 and ended up getting out by Tin Can beach. Even walking out into the shore break on a heavy rip day will take a person out to sea!!

The Huntington junior life guards used to jump from the end and swim back to shore and swim around the pier. The current around the pier takes lots of skill and conditioning to navigate.

Remember that her brother loved her so much that he jumped off the pier to save her, and more than likely would want her to be here. You went all the way back out there and bought his body back, you did more than enough Thank you sir 💯

I'm sorry to hear this story. I went under water once in the ocean as a 11 y/o kid. Came up for air and I was soooooo far out because of the under current. Never been so scared in my life. Was screaming and swimming for my life but no one saw me. Somehow I made it back and was literally EXHAUSTED. ALL I COULD DO WAS CRY. It was soooo hard to swim in the ocean, but I'm kinda athletic till this day so I guess that helped. I haven't been back in ocean water since. The ocean should be taken very seriously in my opinion.

@@nuclearmusic77 He actually did say if we consume his Body and Blood we will have eternal life. John 6:51-58 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”a 52 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. 54 Whoever eats* my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.b 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven.
