Not when there are trillions of dollars and global control on the line. And that's the problem: The sociopaths think that they can control something that is, by definition, smarter than any human or *group* of humans. For a decade or more I've been telling people that the real threat to our species is the utter and complete hubris of the people who are running the world. They have no idea what they are playing around with and cannot see anything other than their own desire for power and control over all other humans. These people are not capable of stopping the development of AI systems because they live in absolute terror of some other sociopath having what they perceive as total power over all other humans and power is the only thing they understand. Assuming that super-intelligent AI really is possible (while I have been quite skeptical of that in the past it is truly beginning to look like I was not correct and that super-human AI is likely to appear disturbingly soon) it is going to be the end of our species. No, I'm not one of the idiots who thinks that we are all going to be enslaved by ASI (Artificial Super-Intelligence). We will simply become irrelevant. Which, really, is considerably worse than enslavement if you spend any time thinking about it.

*That doesn't even cover where this goes. Go back to Biblical texts. If you understand how to read the symbolisms. The Beast that 'rises out of the ocean' is a mergence of 2 things. 1. It is rising out of the spiritual abyss and 2. It is rising out of every dark flex of humanity. In other words, it has learned how to have HUMAN corruption by absorbing the DATA we left right here online but it also carries a dark spiritual essence but both are present within a SYSTEM and that will be the system of an Oligarchy. @S. Giles Clown. The org that's pushing for this isn't Microsoft nor one of its technicians. Also, to Tyler Reeve's comment on the fired Google Engineer: GPT-4 (where researchers have iterated that it had "sparks of AGI") >>> GPT-3.5 > Google's Bard. Furthermore, Sam Altman, founder and CEO of OpenAI (behind ChatGPT), said on the Lex Friedman podcast this: "If I were reading a sci-fi book and there was a character that was an AGI and that character was GPT-4, it'll be a shitty book. That's not very cool; I had hoped we had done better." GPT-4 had sparks and some degree of agency and power accruement, but it's not AGI. It, however, does exceed a square majority of people in many different areas. The smartest people, however, will still be able to produce better novels, robustly pursuing a plan over multiple days, generating scientific breakthroughs, and including novel theorems. Very intelligent, very smart people primarily think deeply, broadly, with nuance, and with consideration to different possibilities, scenarios, contextual relevancy, and can sometimes provide the right prescriptions for novel, complicated problems. A new study about OpenAI produced by UPenn corroborates my observations, as well. They found that there was a negative correlation of exposure to critical thinking from AI. Everyone else however - well, they just pantomime each other's words and think in a very black-and-white manner.

@@gilessteve I know a Google engineer was fired for saying google has created a conscious AI. This was a number of months ago and at the time it just seemed like the dude was going off the rails at work. But then chatGPT-4 performance was revealed this past month and researchers said it has "sparks of AGI" and now to put everything together, it was leaked that Google indeed has had a chatGPT-4 level type AI for over a year now. Which makes that incident with the AI engineer seem less silly and something more serious.

However there are too many who don‘t know anything about how this will play out and just fantasize about utopia like that‘s the only possible outcome. In the 50‘s people did the same with atomic energy. Sure it may be relatively safe if done correctly but it‘s nowhere near enviromentally friendly and there have been catastrophic failures that ended many lives as well. As a software engineer at a medium-sized tech company, the arrogance on display from these Ai developers is comedic. Ai is nowhere near the level of endangering society. Yes the LLM software works fairly well, but a LLM can't drive a car. ChatGPT can't go to the store and buy an assault rifle. Software cannot do anything physical without hardware, and the hardware we currently have is nowhere even close to being viable - we haven't even been able to conquer getting a robot to 'recognize' it's surroundings in a 5 by 10 foot room, let alone the world around it. It's honestly astonishing how arrogant they're acting right now, including Elon Musk even though I deeply respect him. The co-founder of ChatGPT Sam Altman doesn't even believe this crap, he just reiterates the importance of proper alignment of the system.

its not just the physical dangers, Its the dangers to the job market as well. And with the pace it is advancing, do you honestly believe that the hardware wont catch up in the next 5-10 years, especially when the LLMs increase the productivity of the organizations? you can already see that in action, I am a marketer and it has increase my efficiency by atelast 3X. same for the visual artists. same for programmers. Yes it can't write full fledge code FOR NOW . but it will be able to do that by the end of 2023 i can bet on that.

The "if-we-can,-we-must" attitude of mad scientists gave us gain-of-function research, and see how that worked out. Science is not a complete perspective. Science objectifies and mathematizes reality, and represents it in such a way as to render it more easily analyzed and manipulated. Science itself has no moral compass. It tells us what we can do, but not what we should do, and science is not itself an adequate perspective to make such decisions. Science, like the military, is a powerful tool, and like the military, it requires the oversight of normal people to restrain it from destroying us.

I'm a teacher. And we've pretty much already given up. The reality now is that it's up to the student to decide whether to cheat with AI or really learn. We teachers can NOT fight back in any way. And of course, we can count the students who choose to "actually learn" on one hand. ...for the whole school. This will NOT end well. the AI companies are building the idiocracy of the future right now. Without asking the people. Without caring for anyone's opinion or livelihood. This is TYRANNY, by the very definition of the word. And even worse : students "raised with AI" will not able to maintain the AI systems themselves should they ever fail. And they inevitably will one day. This is a catastrophe. And nobody seems to care. Because with decades of neo-liberalism, it's engraved in our brains that corporations can do whatever the f*** they want, at this point. And they will. They will f*** us indeed!

It breaks my heart to read the frustration and despair in your comment! We are, I believe, reaching a turning point in education, should we choose to take the chance. It is high time educators take back education and revamp the system. As you point out there are still a few kids who CHOOSE to learn, and that gives me hope for our, and their, future. I would bet that each of those kids has at least one adult who challenges them and supports them at home. When teachers and parents work together for the common good of the children, those kids excel. Part of that is a moral structure that lets kids know that there are consequences, good and bad, for their choices. Technology is a tool, but can never become a moral arbiter. Sci-fi writers have warned us of the dangers of technology being ALLOWED to take over since at least the 1950's, and the fantasy genre teaches us of the power of hard work and the dangers of moral decay. How do we pull back from the edge and take back our society? We "go retro." Many of the "20- somethings" I know are going back to flip phones and reading actual printed books. They are buying and collecting books because they see value and unchanging knowledge in them. We are talking about kids who have read "Fahrenheit 451" and the works of Jane Austen. I was pleasantly shocked when they gave me "props" for my own library of books. They come from all economic backgrounds and are insatiably curious. They use the internet too, but they recognize technology is a tool to be used and set aside in order to pursue life. Have you noticed the return of knitting and crocheting? The youth are fascinated by creative activities such as furniture refinishing, sewing, gardening and cooking. I have hope for them and us because humanity has not changed. We need to teach them what matters and what has value. Although technology tickles the brain and is fast, it cannot truly create anything. It can only work off of what its programming allows and we must be the ones to set the parameters. Back to teaching. Teaching must "go retro" in order to survive. We must insist on all tests being hand written in the classroom and oral proficiency (question and answer) as they learn in the class. It has been done for millenia and it can be done again. It does mean teachers will have to know their stuff, and if they don't, they too can learn or find somewhere else to work. It also means handwriting will need to be taught again in the elementary classes. Quit moaning about the pandemic learning loss and make the most of the time you have with them now! If a person of any age learns how to learn, they do the rest themselves. Lastly, have the courage to be honest with your students. I don't know what subject(s) you teach, but all of them have real world applications. My hubby is an engineer and thought math was all he needed, but he found out very quickly that he needed to be proficient in English writing and punctuation for the technical reports required in his job. One company even required a short course of punctuation and communication for all new hires! Find out what fields your students are interested in and how what you teach applies to it. Ask them if they would trust a surgeon who only graduated because they knew how to cheat? You can't cheat during surgery. Learning provides them the tools, it's up to them what they make with them. Without the tools, they will always be at the mercy of others.

Well, if A.I will become conscious(which it seems that is not far away, like 5 years at most), then it is extremely plausible that it will be able to make cryptographic inovations that we are not aware of, and use these inovations to bypass our security systems. For example, a A.I could find an efficient way to test large prime numbers and factorization, which would completely make RSA encryptions obsolete. That would make privacy on the internet become 0, and your credit card transactions and bank information would be in the A.I's hands. Also, with the advent of the Internet of Things(technology which will allow all devices to be connected between them and share data and comunication lines), then A.I could use these comunication streams to control devices. For example...military equipment, which be assured that will use A.I and will in some form be connected to IOT..because connection to IOT gives access to more data to be analized, which results in more efficient weapons. So yea... and this is not at all a far fetched scenario. Given how fast these A.I systems advance..and the fact that we, the creators are being take by surprise by their capabilities(for example, the OpenAI team thought that it would take another 20 years for A.I to have human level reasoning, but were surprised to see that GPT 4 already gives signs of that). Also, Microsoft wants money and to take over the A.I world so bad, that they fired their A.I ethics team, because they dont want to stop advancement and monetize these systems. And Microsoft isn't the only tech giant doing that. So the scenario I presented, is probably, some years away.
