Wow! great explanation for a new learner. The graph charts of sticks and rotors were an exceptionally helpful visual. You nailed it for me as far as filling in the gaps in my trial an error process. I'm 62 yrs old and my older brother says my brain won't keep up with the speed these things are flying. As in I won't be able to process the speed of the drone quick enough to ever be a good enough pilot. I'm certain your vid and others like this will help me prove him wrong. Thanks bro.

I have the basic flips and rolls down, but I'm going to learn how to roll out of them slower now as per your video. One maneuver I do want to learn is when you see a pilot (and you do it in this video too) is a loop. It looks like the nose points skywards and the quad climbs vertical and comes over to do a complete loop. I can do those all day long on my planks, it's easy enough, but I'm having trouble working out how they are done on a multirotor. It seems to my mind, it just shouldn't work!
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
+mrmurder75 haha i know what you mean, and you do have to 'use the force' a little as you point skyward. But it's really about entering with a little forward speed, plenty of power and just enough back elevator, then keeping committed with the power/elevator until the inverted horizon comes into view, and yea it just feels unintuitive waiting as you come around, but it will be there and you will be lots higher.. Ill add this one to the list anyway :)
@mrmurder758 жыл бұрын
+NJ Tech that's great, thanks make. It's always helpful to us less skilled to see how the pros do it. I've just literally come back from the field. Really enjoyed it today. I almost got a loop out of it, unintended but a loop none the less. I found myself nose straight up and on the power, if I'd kept it in I think I would of done it (or crashed horribly) but I lost my bottle and pulled out of it. Maybe next time!
@mrmurder758 жыл бұрын
+NJ Tech oh, an as per your video, I taught myself to roll and flip a lot slower rather than just banging the sticks. Previously I was a little afraid to not do it quickly, I just wanted to get it over and done and get back the right way up. But today I've been rolling and flipping backwards and forwards, nice and slowly. It certainly looks better and smoother in the goggles that way, hopefully it looks good on the video too.

@checkeredflagfilms5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. In the trick you're rolling on the 'frame' axis. Do ever demo the same move by combining a bit of yaw so the you're rolling on the axis of the camera angle?
@NJ-Tech5 жыл бұрын
Yes that's possible and actually part of keeping a centred inverted yaw which I have a few tutorials on. The second of which I discuss more in depth. If you're feeling a little lazy there is a setting called camera angle mix which applies this for you on the configuration page, though there is a tiny bit of latency added, nothing you'll likely pick up on though.
@checkeredflagfilms5 жыл бұрын
@@NJ-Tech Yes, I've heard about that setting in BetaFlight. Are you aware of anyone that has done a comparison, real world comparison with/without that setting implemented?

Great vids to help us out thanks 😎 can I ask what cam angle you have ? As when I do a roll I end up like 90 deg from where I started ? Would this do with angle of cam ?
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
+rebels of the sky I use about 30 degrees up-tilt on my FPV camera. Rolls should actually be easier with 0 degrees up-tilt so im not sure why you are finishing 90 degrees off? make sure that you are clean with your inputs of the manoeuvre. If you are touching the pitch by accident during the roll, then that would cause you to finish in a strange position.

What are you using to get the overlay on the flight video? Would be nice to be able to do some post-flight evaluation of my stick throws.
@NJ-Tech6 жыл бұрын
its called bletaflight blackbox explorer. Your flight controller needs to have an onboard flash in order to log the flight info/inputs etc. You select it to record via a switch in the modes tab of betaflight. Then you can download the file from your flight controller and drop it into black box explorer along with a video file of the flight. You then line up the start of the blackbox with the audible arming beep from your video and youll see everything going on with the sticks as well as a heap of info about the PID controller over the top of the video. There are quiet a few videos out there on how to set all this up.

why not full throttle while flip? fc would give thrust only to right side motors and faster flip with some flying down of course for a while?
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
+FotoAmg AmgFoto the flight controller is acting like a mixer. If you ask for full throttle and flip it will be powering through the flip way off its axis. Much like a small powerloop. If you try it you will see :) to keep a tight flip close to axis you must bring the throttle down.

does a multirotor also get some extra lift when it is flying forwards?
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
multirotors have nothing aerodynamically to offer that helps with lift when moving. Like their helicopter cousins, they do become slightly more efficient in forward flight due to what's called 'transitional lift' across the rotors, moving into clean air. Hovering is actually the least efficient thing to do.

very nice tutorial, I am getting into fpv and it is very hard to look into the goggles and fly around. I wonder if it is better to get pretty good in acro in line of view then switch over to goggles. also what kind of mode are you in? acro or air mode?
@NJ-Tech7 жыл бұрын
Christian Bianchini both acro mode with air mode enabled. although it's a great idea to keep working on LOS skills, all it takes is time in the goggles to get used to it. start with good level circuits and just keep at it, it will get better with every flight I promise :)
@max2467 жыл бұрын
NJ Tech ahah yeah I am ok flying in angle , and getting used to acro. already smashed few props and having a go every day. I am ok flying high but want to get some fine motion with low ground and obstacles. let's see..
@BrigzyFPV6 жыл бұрын
Acro is Air Mode. If you switch to Acro it will display AIR on your OSD. I had the same question, I am also brand new to FPV and Quads. This is what I did and it worked great. Get used to your Quad in LOS (Line of Sight) flying but just in Angle and Horizon modes. Try some Acro but you will find it very difficult, I did. Flying Acro LOS is completely different and way harder than Acro in FPV. In FPV you have the advantage of seeing FROM the Quad so you can adjust attitude very quickly, not the same as standing there looking at it, that is very hard in Acro. Get LIFTOFF Simulator and practice Acro, then go out and lift off in angle mode, get moving and switch to Acro, you will find that after using the simulator it becomes natural and you will be surprised at how easy it is, must have some sim experience to work out how to fly Acro... I just did my first Acro FPV yesterday and it went much better than I expected, it's so much more fun... it's not that hard. Have a look if keen kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYfSe4RoobGEgc0
@NJ-Tech6 жыл бұрын
Actually no, acro does not mean airmode. Acro means the level mode is no longer engaged (the accelerometers) and just the gyros (rate mode is its true name) are engaged. Air mode is a selectable 'mode' you can have permanently enabled or on a switch which works together with rate (acro) mode to give you full rates (movement in degrees per second) on your sticks extremes on pitch and roll at all throttle positions. There are videos explaining this in more detail if you search in youtube.
@BrigzyFPV6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I know that but what I was trying to say was, when you select Acro/Rate Mode it usually displays as AIR on your OSD, not Rate or Acro. I switch to Acro and also switch on and off Air Mode to keeps my motors running at zero throttle, which is what you are saying about airmode. Cool..
@Sam-w9des7 жыл бұрын
i do have one more question bout this quad. on flight modes is it just like on a heli? so example lets say I put it in flight mode 2 or 3 does that mean its idled up and throttle wont change when I flip it or do high speed flying it just maily turns throttle into pitch control? THANKS
@NJ-Tech7 жыл бұрын
So the flight controller is in some way doing that, well actually its doing all the hard work! All the controls are active all the time. It's not like a Heli idle up where throttle is maintained at a set rpm as such but I get where you're are going with the comparison. When you front flip at a set altitude for instance, the rear motors are briefly spinning up faster than the front motors to bring them over the front (a front flip) whist the front motors drop rpm so as to not add resistance to that flip. When the flip stops they resume whatever throttle position they were at to maintain that set altitude. Now, conversely, say you wanted to do that same front flip whilst the quad was climbing at maximum throttle? This time the quad would see all motors are at max thrust so in order to gain that same front flip it can't generate anymore thrust from the rear motors so it just drop the rpm on the front motors to achieve the same thing. I hope that makes sense, but what the FC is doing is adjusting what thrust it has in any given situation to achieve what the pilot wants. Thats a very basic description mind, its infinitely complicated whats going on, as as well as that it has to maintain stability in the other axis and correct for external forces like wind etc. Its pretty amazing the more you think about it :)

what ya need elevator on a quad, I mean if u give it throttle it climbs right?
@NJ-Tech7 жыл бұрын
You need elevator (or pitch) for the same reasons that you need it on a helicopter. If you can't adjust the pitch of the nose you can't direct the thrust to move forward. Ever notice a helicopter hovering is flat, but then when it moves away its nose goes down to start moving forward? Pitch is as vital to how a quad flies as it is to all fling machines.

how do you feel about thumb vs two finger stick control?
@NJ-Tech7 жыл бұрын
I spent the first 10 years of my RC time using thumbs, I went to 'pinch' after that when I was flying 3D helis and have done it that way ever since. I just felt like it gave me more precision. Though I think its pretty 50/50 across all types of pilots and pretty subjective. Give both a good go to get used to them is my advice, you'll soon see which you prefer.
@airplanegeorge7 жыл бұрын
thanks, 50 % sounds good enough, after 40 years using my thumbs I think pinch might be a ruff transition. I've bean learning fpv drones and think I can see where pinch is more precise. maybe i'll experiment with shorter sticks.
@sgollega8 жыл бұрын
Hi NJ, I noticed that you are always moving forward without applying pitch forward all the time. Is that your camera angle or maybe your engines are mounted with some angle (lets say, 10 degrees?) I am asking that because I need to pitch forward more often to go forward than I have seen you doing. I am using 25 degrees on my fpv camera. What makes you keep going forward? Thanks for your help and tips!
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
Hey there, so in rate mode when you set the pitch forward it should maintain that angle and keep moving forward with just thrust to stop you sinking. If you quad is needing constant forward pitch and wont keep its nose down when you let go then your 'i' term is too soft and needs increasing. If you watch my PID tuning video i talk about how to tune your quadcopter to get this right. I have no angle mounts, and i run a camera tilt of about 25 degrees. Hope that helps :)

Hi! How come you are using 20A ESCs with these motors and props? Wouldn't 30A be more usable with this combination? Sorry for a nooby comment :)
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
remember they are 20a each so a combined 80amps nominal and can handle up to a ten second burst of 30 amps each for a total of 120 amps. that's plenty for a little 5 inch quad ;)

Thanks! I'm pretty new to the hobby and was just looking at the amp chart provided by Emax for these motors.
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
+Gregor Ambrozic you also have to remember static thrust tests aren't like they will be in flight because unlike the bench, the quad won't provide as much resistance as it actually moves with throttle increase in the direction of thrust which reduces the load/current draw
@itak19828 жыл бұрын
OK, that makes so much sense. Thanks again :)

Would it work with a mini quadcopter? let's say Hubsab X4 .)
@NJ-Tech8 жыл бұрын
there are plenty of miniquads on betaflight that fly fantastically. The hubsan no, mainly because its a self levelling quadcopter, there is not rate mode on it. Plus the ones with fpv are heavy, it just doesnt have the thrust, unless you want to get serious with your mods.

Very helpful, I am just starting with FPV and have just managed to get a grip on Acro, (just posted a new vid of it) and looking at how to start pulling basic aero's, chopping throttle in the roll etc is something you might not think to do instinctively but now I will when I try it. I have rolled in Horizon but not Acro, it's the thought of... "will I be able to come out of the trick in control" or not? With Acro it's so different, it won't (obviously) arrest the roll when level... I think I will do with some height until happy. Thanks again, really good vid, what is the program you are using to show us your video, it's a great way to display and explain your tricks. One question, is it common to have your Failsafe kick in when you are FPV'ing? Like when you fly slightly behind something solid? It happened to me twice the other day, both times it activated when I went close to out of sight but not fully. My latest vid has one at the start and one at the end, both show it Dropping and crashing, both Failsafe, just wondered if it's common? Or do I have a problem? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYfSe4RoobGEgc0 Thx again from Kiwiland!
@NJ-Tech6 жыл бұрын
you're welcome, yes failsafes can happen when you break line of sight to the quad behind some more solid objects, so fly cautiously and try to not put large objects between you and the drone as it can block the signal enough to cause a failsafe. Happy flying! The program is called blackbox.

I’ll have my walkera f210 by the end of the week and my plan is to only practice acro mode until I get the hang of it. I don’t wanna get complacent in horizon mode , I’m gonna take my time a learn to fly fully manual from the start. I think will be better for me. Thanks for the reply.

no worries! Yea just take your time and as i said in this video, nice and high so you have loads of recovery time. You'll be ripping in no time ;)
