FPX finished first both regular splits, they shouldve versed iG in spring finals but Zoom said no, imp was on form and mLWXg was getting caught a lot. And the sad part is they put zoom on tank duty when jdg vs iG. But thats a massive what if fpx vs iG in finals. FPX were designed to beat iG, if fpx beat iG. They couldve went on to MSI won it, atleast not lose to TL and then no one complains.

But IG then stomped through the MSI Group stage and beat everyone, yet G2 won the entire tournament. If u think going 9-1 in groups is better than winning the title itself then FPX might be the better team over the the whole year. But if the title is worth more than G2 definitely is better since they only lost 1 bo5 in the whole year and won everything there is.

FPX was the best team in S9. 1st in the regular season in spring in the world’s best region, and it took Zoom having the series of his career-the rest of which is quite great btw-to stop them in playoffs. They do even better in summer and only drop one bo3, and then they run through playoffs to become champions. Follow all of this by winning worlds. I really think they only look weaker from a few bo1’s in the Worlds Group stage.

LoL is just weird. Somehow both of these Statements are true: Samsung White was one of the most dominant team ever. And: Samsung White wasnt even the best team overall in Season 4... But in hindsight almost everyone forgets, that SSW was only truely dominant on one patch. Which is always the story of Worlds: The team that figures out how to play on that certain patch, wins the tournament. And that team often times looks insanly good, even though they didnt do much all year... This is actually a real problem. Because being good in Spring doesnt help you much, when the Worlds Meta can look completly different...

@@ajmamora6332 especially when you are SKT... They tried to power through after Season 3 Worlds, played a perfect Winter and then basically collapsed in Season 4. Ever since then, they often time take of entire Patches during the regular season... and only won Summer twice since Season 3, but reached 3 World Finals, winning 2. Once when they went into loadmanagement mode with Easyhoon... the other time after finishing the regular season only in 4th place. Just remember how often SKT finished like 4th during Summer Regular Season and did just enough to secure their spot at Worlds. I always believed, that that was somewhat intentional. Like I actually remember SKT completly sucking for an entire patch in 2016, randomly loosing to bottom LCK teams all of a sudden... and everyone was like "What is wrong with SKT?" and I was like "They are taking their anual break from mastering the game... That was the phase when Wolf even forgot how to pick a skin... and yet they won Worlds a couple of patches later... So yeah, SKT used to be the best team at getting themselve into peak form when it matters, but laying back when it didnt.

Gotta disagree with the IG take on s8, they went 18:1 in both regular seasons and stepped up in worlds. The kt bo5 was close to a 3-0 sweep and the only big lose they had was against fnc in groups, but after groups they looked miles ahead of every other team.

It feels odd to me to just hand G2 S9's team of the year considering their inability to play against Chinese teams; you could definitely argue going into MSI finals that had TL not upset IG that IG would've been favored to beat G2, and you could also argue that IG wasn't even the best team in China, and got lucky that JDG kinda fluked a Bo5 win against FPX in the semis of the LPL spring playoffs. LEC titles have always been worth less to me than LPL and LCK titles throughout the years (being as there were only really 2 great teams in LEC, and 2019 FNC was a shell of the 2018 LEC rivalry teams, despite making quarters, they did it over Clutch gaming, and an RNG team that didn't look great to me). So while G2 has the "results" to back up being team of the year, having won LEC Spring, MSI LEC Summer and 2nd at words 2019; There was little point that year that I felt as though they were undisputedly kings. MSI was tainted by them going 5-5 in groups (losing 0-2 to PVB and IG no less) beating SKT in a close 5 game series that imo could've gone either way, and then beating TL, who ALSO didn't do great in groups. The teams in the finals of that MSI combined for a losing record in the group stage, with 9 wins 11 loses. That doesn't scream to me the level of dominance that I would expect from a team of the year that had so little discussion revolving around it. Couple that with the fact that G2 may have won both splits, but beating FNC 3-2 twice in summer also wasn't exactly a display of dominance of their own region (in spring G2 hard bodied OG, dominance displayed) The issue I have though is that I don't know what other team could be in the discussion; FPX won worlds (Beating G2 VERY convincingly in the finals); but ran into JDG's miracle run to the finals in spring, in a format which allows a team to build momentum before ever facing an opponent which I think can lead to more upsets than a standard 1st place plays 8th place bracket; which robbed them the chance of cementing themselves as the team of the year by winning MSI; they didn't even get the opportunity to. However they were the number 1 team in the regular season, and were the favorites going into playoffs. In summer they absolutely RAN the LPL, going 29-4 in regular season and only dropping 2 games in playoffs for a final record of 35-6; they then had a shakey group stage but still came out in 1st, and then ran the worlds bracket, smashing griffin, beating the defending world champion and dumpstered G2 in the finals. It feels very odd to me that in some ways, both G2 and FPX had 1 "bad" series the entire year, it's just that FPX's cost them the chance to go to MSI, while G2's cost them the world trophy; but G2 gets very heavily rewarded in this scenario, despite looking worse overall looking at the composite of every B05 the two teams played on the year. G2's B05 game win rate on the year was 66.6% at 24-12 (as a result of them winning 3 separate series 3-2; and losing 0-3 in the finals to FPX). FPX on the other hand had 20 wins and 8 loses in B05's for a win percentage of 71.43% (They lost 1 series 2-3; and won every other series 3-1 or 3-0) If we only count their series wins to show how "dominant" they were, G2 was 24-9 and FPX was 18-5, so G2 had a 72.72% winrate and FPX had a 78.3%. In terms of total game count (regular season MSI and worlds all included); FPX was 82-22 on the season, while G2 were 62-25, so FPX had an overall winrate of 78.85% while G2's was 71.26%. In the end It comes down to how much you weigh MSI appearances and winning; especially if you think beating the tournament favorite counts for "more". G2 competed in almost inarguably a weaker region, fought a weaker region than they should've for their international trophy; avoided the "dominant" region of the era until the finals at worlds, and then lost there. In a year where they failed to win a single game against what was perceived to be the best region in the world, it feels strange to me to name them as the "best" for the year, and slightly disingenuous to just how good that FPX lineup was throughout that year. If in the end you still think G2 ends up with the crown because of the MSI win then hey; fair enough, but I felt as though the context of that FPX team deserved to get talked about a bit more; and honestly that would be a deep dive topic I'd be interested in hearing more about.

This sounds a lot like the tennis ATP ranking system where winning a grand slam doesn't necesarily make you number 1 in the world. Instead number 1 position is determined by the accumulated results over the past year compared to other players. We need more international events. Maybe riot could add a pre-season tournament and/or a champions league. also for international experience it would be beneficial and interesting to see events for the mid table teams similar to the uefa to see how they stack up against each other.

I think I have a different opinion on best team of the year for s9. Id actually have to agree with the level 1 opinion of FPX being the best team for the whole year. They were a pretty dominant team for both spring and summer regular splits. They choked a close 3-2 best of 5 to JDG during the spring finals which kept us from seeing them at MSI. And remember, fpx was a much more stable team then IG. I think if fpx went to msi, we wouldn't have seen that team choke to team liquid. That best of 5 is the only series they lost all year. Plus the fact that they so utterly fucked G2 in the world finals means Im pretty comfortable putting them as the best team all year. Im not comfortable giving it to a team that FPX railed in the head to head just cause they lost a single best of 5. I get you could argue that G2 only loses the head 2 head cause of a bad style matchup to FPX, but id still take fxp over g2 in a bunch of matchups against other top teams that year. I know fpx also had a weakish groups showing, but id just insert the normal groups excuses (bo1, new meta and tourny, hiding shit, not taking it seriously, bla bla bla) Still, its not outrageous to want the best team to go to g2

The irony is that the finals was the first time that year that FPX had gone 3-0 in a Bo5. Sure they were regular season monsters in the LPL, but the main criticism / talking point about them was whether or not they'd choke under pressure. Historically DoinB teams have had a tendency to do this in the LPL, get to playoffs as favorites/strong contenders but not win when it counts. Like you said in spring they were upset by JDG, and then even in summer they didnt play clean series either. Even at worlds they never really looked like a dominant clear favorite until game 2 of finals had been played. They dropped games all over the place, losing to J team of all things in group and having to tiebreak splyce for 1st.

@@ZimzamsXD I think this argument is a little disingenuous. FPX went 3-1 vs rng in china amd 3-1 vs ig and fnc at worlds. I get that they never gave off overwhelming dominance in playoffs. But i feel like that perception is due to 2 things: their dominance in regular season and their playstyle. They didnt have a faker or caps or uzi, but they had some of the best skirmish and midgame decision making id ever seen. Like doinb had problems in past teams with bo5s but to say fpx was pleagued by them feels wrong to me. And also remember that all the top teams that year had things you could point out as "looking shaky". Skt had moments where players wouldnt show up. G2 loved to int every so often, rngs mid was kinda shitting the bed, and ig had a bearly sentiant ward in the jungle (for a top team at least). I still think I can call FPX the best the that year

@ZimzamsXD 4 жыл бұрын
@@thunderbolt1213984 Well the point of "they didnt have a top player" when we are talking about the best team in the world, isnt exactly a selling point is it? Id agree it is hard to argue that FPX werent the best team at worlds. That YEAR you can then start to formulate an argument for G2 through their clutch factor etc. But again, this is an odd case where , while fpx were certainly strong, the stars also aligned perfectly for them. They had about as easy a groups + bracket draw as you can realistically get, they lucked into a very favorable meta, there was no uber strong seemingly unbeatable opponent, and they had the worlds song buff (lol). In other years you could change some of these factors and the best team would still probably be the best. Not so in 2019.

You mention teams getting lucky brackets, but totally ignore that for G2 for season 9. The only reason they won MSI is because they didn't face a Chinese team in the bracket. Hard to pick a team of the year for season 9, but if it's a team that went 0-5 against Chinese teams and 0-2 against Vietnam teams, that's a pretty sorry format to decide the best team.

This is the reason why in after the last 3 worlds all I was feeling is: "Is this it?" I often don't even watch finals live as they almost never contain the two best teams and have one huge favorite. It is becoming more and more obvious that the format Riot is pushing onto us is unsustainable. God how great would it be to see the playoff teams play 3 tournaments instead. How many great matchups would we see? How dominant would a team have to be to win them all? What adaptation would come out of certain teams? What storylines of certain team matchups would develop?

MSI is just trash for setting these things up though... I agree with everything, every pick except IG. They go 18-1 in Spring Regular season, lose 2-3 to RNG in semis who won MSI dominantly. They lose in the 3rd place match in a meaningless game, then they go 18-1 again in Summer, make it to finals and lose 2-3 to RNG again. These guys were two games, not series, games from ending the entire year in the strongest region in the world 40-2 (those are all series, not games) and being Spring champs, MSI Champs and Summer Champs. And you say there's NO way they were the best team in the world after beating KT G2 and Fnatic... They were my pick to win worlds going into the tournament and I don't pick upsets. Almost definitely most dominant team of the year, maybe RNG but idk MSI just needs to invite more teams for this conversation to mean anything at all.

This is a weird argument, since in many sports we see teams win the biggest tournament even though some other team(s) were certainly better or more dominant throughout the whole year, or season. But regardless, before I watch, here's how I look at it: - Season 10 best team was Damwon, won Worlds. - Season 9 best team was G2, didn't win Worlds. - Season 8 best team was RNG/KT, didn't win Worlds. - Season 7 best team was Longzhu, didn't win Worlds. - Season 6 best team was ROX, didn't win Worlds. - Season 5 best team was SKT, won Worlds. - Season 4 best team was SSB, didn't win Worlds. - Season 3 best team was SKT, won Worlds. - Season 2 best team was M5/AF, didn't win Worlds. (Didn't watch season 1) Edit: Holy shit, agreeing with Thorin feels weird :p

I can see where Thorin is coming from in this one, it makes sense that just winning one tournament doesn't make you the best team in the world, however, i would counter that just by saying that the entire system of league torunaments is just beyond retarded. Yea IG in 2018 didn't play MSI, but that's because MSI only allows the winners of each respective region to play. If the system wasn't fucking idiotic, maybe IG make MSI, and then WIN IT, thereby having the only two international titles available in the given year, so even if they can't win domestically, internationally speaking they'd still be the best team. The lack of international play in League is a massive issue imo, and potentially the main reason developing regions like the South American ones or the CIS can't hit their peak, because they just never get to play some of the world's best

no way s9 best team was G2......... according to your own logic they were not even best team in 2018 MSI, they were only better than SKT or they know how to counter play SKT or TL. They even lost both games to Phong Vu buffalo and IG. IG had the best result in MSI and were able to beat SKT in record breaking time. G2 never won IG in MSI(IG 9-1). G2 in worlds that year same story, they were thrown down by Griffen, again they were able to beat SKT( only real achievement), lost to again chinese team. If they would have meat IG instead of Damwon gaming story would be so simple and easy. G2 was the luckiest team in 2019. G2 only showed up in play offs, there over all performance of that year was just above avg.

WTF did I just watch... Saying IG wasn't the best team in 2018 just because they lost the 5th game to RNG in lpl summer final is just dumb, even through the eye test, IG was able to play carry style through all 3 lanes while RNG was only able to play through bot with UZI which was very exploitable as you can tell when they get hard camp bot at worlds. FPX bitch slapped G2 in one of the quickest bo5 series at world and were extremely dominating in LPL and you still count them out.

IG was easily the best team of 2018. Did you see their record post season? Or the fact they couldnt play The Shy in 2018 summer playoffs...... Fpx Almost annihlated 2019 spring and and then did summer season. They lost in 2019 spring playoffs in an upset.......Onto 2020. Its stings but TOP/JDG was definitely best of the year but damwon was the defacto best team in worlds. If not for MSC and damwons change of approach towards the game I think Worlds would've turned out vastly different. In my opinion both JDG and TOP slumped, along with sunning over preforming hence the results of the bracket. The meta favored JDG's playstyle heavily yet they failed at quarters in a serious upset....

As usual G2 biased video. I think FPX was really good entire year even if they didn't win Spring, this is because Thorin doesn't even watch LPL regular season. FPX and IG are still better teams than G2. How is wrecking LEC even impressive when competition in LPL is way tougher? I see no world where G2 beats IG, even slumping IG, when G2 always loses to teams with better topside, meaning top, jg, mid. If that guy, GRF Sword can fk Wunder on the arse going 7/0 on Jayce, what would TheShy do to him? oh right you think with your biased brain TheShy is shit, and Wunder is somehow a "God". Even Gimgoon was better than Wunder in the entire Worlds run. G2's weakest players at Worlds has always been Top and Jungle, 2 years in a row. Not even Perkz. I mean ask Rookie who even said the same thing. Just watch Wunder play Camille so averagely, always carried by Caps TF (which is supposed to be a busted duo Camille TF, watch and compare him to Zoom and Bin Camille, not even close) and how bad he played Renekton 1-4 at Worlds, losing on winning match ups vs Gimgoon and Nuguri. Wunder becoming so useless once DWG banned tanks. I haven't even started yet on Jankos, he was jus uncomfortable on all carry junglers and carried no shit, it was still Caps. But of course, your biased anti Caps brain, will always think every G2 loss is somehow on Caps.

@@thestealthgirl3231 its funny, the main point to this video is that the best team in the world doesnt always win the championship. Thats means it could be true for G2 in s9 as well. I probably shouldnt argue since you seem to not speak with any nuance. Like i wish I could talk about how its close between g2 and fpx. Butbased on the language you use, your probably not even open to the discussion which is especially dumb. It most certainly isnot a clear cut case of g2>fpx (also the same for the other eay around). Ill try to convince you this take is bad with just one example. Just know theres a dozen things that go against your point. Something thorin didnt point out in the video is sometimes the best team on the world can have a Achilles heel in the form of one specific team. If the best team faces that Achilles heel in the quarterfinals and the winner of tournament ends up coming from the other side. Say that team that wins the tournament doesnt even end up playing the Achilles heel team to win the championship. Say the team that won got stomped by the best team regionally every time they played. Are you really going to claim that the team that won the tourny is the best team in the world. Nah
