Just found your videos and they are great! While I do think the FM3 is a step up in many aspects, I prefer the POD GO. It is easy to get overwhelmed with all the options in a modeler so the fact that the POD GO is limited works in my favor. I also like that it can work as a standalone unit with the extra buttons and expression pedal built in. The POD GO sounds pretty good and just makes more sense for how I use a modeler.
@arnolddealiii42594 жыл бұрын
Very good video! Playing is top notch! Here is my two cents :) Ultimately the modeler never sounded like the Marshall in either case. You were able to dial in the FX3 to a slightly closer sound, but in reality it the Pod Go and the FX3 sounded closer in sounding alike. I would give this a win to the Line 6 boys. FX3 has gobs of amps, cabs, and other feature compared to the Line 6 Pod Go... but I believe that's the point of the Pod Go. Pod Go isn't really a Helix because it only has one of the processors that the Helix has. It also doesn't do a lot of the stereo effects that Helix can do. The reason behind this is because it was not designed for guys like yourself, the tweaker. Guys that want to tweak would imho be disappointed with the limitations of the Pod Go, like yourself. It is my opinion that this is Pod Go was designed for guys that don't like spending loads of time dialing in tones. Guys like me. I want a simple interface that I can work with and make quick simple sounds. I'm not interested in trying to duplicate a real world amp tone, because I don't have the options to play my real amp out in the world that often. Lastly, again I admit FX3 has more features... but with all the extra things you need to buy with it, it looses it's flexibility for live situations fairly quickly. With the Pod Go setup is relatively easy. Power plug, instrument cable, out to audio source (amp, mixer, or usb) to me that 6 connections by my count or 3 cords to plug in. With MIDI you can easily add 4 for the in and out on both sides plus a power cable making it 12 connectors to plug in. In a live situation you don't always have the luxury of setup time. Unless the FX3 and the MIDI are on a pedal board you're kind of hosed. So to me doesn't it make more sense with an FX3, doesn't it make better sense to go for the full sized rack gear with controller rather than buy the FX3 and all these extra little things? From a tweaker stand point yes, it does! Pod Go is simple, small, well constructed, and easy to get going on. It's a live rig you won't spend more than 5 minutes setting up, and it's all basically self contained. So that is why in my opinion you would pick a Pod Go over the FX3. Cost, size, efficiency, ease of use.

The sound quality is so high or close to each other that for myself the unit I would want would be the one that is most simple user friendly and reliable/ durable. I am not into lots of FX. Just simple to use and program about 6 patches. With a all in one unit I would not use an FX loop. Just guitar in, amp out and a IR DI out to record or front of house. I would choose the POD.

Leo - You make the best, objective, informative, and useful product comparisons I've seen on KZbin - simply outstanding! Personally, I'm not into physical Amplifiers. But, I do care about sound, versatility, weight, size, physical and digital interface, and price. So far, the Pod Go looks like the best choice for me. How good is it's Expression pedal? Based on the User Manual, it looks like if a USB MIDI "Controller" was connected to a computer, with the Pod Go connected to the computer, then the Controller could be used to adjust features on the Pod Go via MIDI. The computer would be acting as a USB Host. Thanks

I just received my invitation to buy the FM3... ...so of course the "cheap guy/second-guesser" in me decided to jump on these videos - just in case I can be dissuaded. I will be the first to admit it may be a ridiculous exercise to question my decision to purchase a good modeler, as I play in wedding and cover bands - yes, even in these crazy times - and I also teach online; so of course any of these will be a good decision. :) In my opinion, this is the most comprehensive comparison video I've seen yet regarding the FM3. I'm still reticent to pull the trigger due to my cheap tendencies, but your videos have helped me tremendously. I particularly like the quick comparisons and helpful graphics. As for the supposed latency: while quantifiable, it's just not a major concern when we're dealing with modern (2020 and on) modelers. Thank you, Leo!

The modelers sound the same between different units, but tube amps don't, namely due to valve gain and its change with age. So, I think you have perhaps chosen a too bright tone, possibly a bit out of "normal" range of usability, so the modelers are not very good on that. To emulate it better they should have a lot less low end before the distortion, which can be achieved on both FM3 and POD Go with EQ before the amp. So, either the modelers are weak at this point or your amp is out of normal characteristics. Anyway, I have enjoyed very much your video, because we always learn something. Regarding the latency you can record simultaneously a guitar direct signal (via a DI) and each of the modeler outputs. A short "click" is enough and easy to spot. Then, just use the DAW in seconds and read the time difference. Note: you can do the same with the analog path, except for the IR on the DAW whose latency will probably only be noticeable on the output and not on the recorded track. Note that 1 ms of latency corresponds to the sound travelling 34 cm through the air. So if you are used to play the real deal at about 3 meters from the speakers, that corresponds to about 10 ms "latency".
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hey Antonio, thank you so much for your message and your suggestions! I think your approach for measuring the latency is pretty clever! I will try it and post some videos in the future! Thank you once more!!!

Hi Leo, I think you have to put the IR the Daw for all three devices because i think the FM3 and the POd too sounds differently from the real amp in the same way. Probably is due to the fact that they manage the IR differently to the IR loader of your DAW.
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hi Giuliano, I've used the same IR for all the units: for the amp, the IR is loaded in the DAW using torpedo wall of sound; for the modelers, the IRS are loaded in the internal IR loader of the modelers. I prefer not to use the IR loader of the DAW, in order to let you know also how the IR loader sof the modelers behave! Thank you for your comment and for sharing your opinion!!!

Most Notably plugged in with 2 cables or 4 cable method using high quality cables on the amp gain channel. I don't even use that much gain. Is this the nature of a digital product? Is this only my unit? This does not occur with another or digital pedals. To omit ground loop and rf interference using a a powe conditioner and everything plugged into the same outlet. Try 2 cable of 4 cable method. Turn gain channel on set amp or pod go volume low. Listen for constant flangin' or chorus'ing effect with high pitch frequencies underneath the natural hiss noise of the amp. I do not get the same thing with separate digital or analog pedals. Same cables same setup tested through 2 different amps Thoughts? This is with even All amp simulation and fx disabled. It is even worse even with just a USB to my pc and with all other peripherals disconnected, without an amp. Since these are basically little digital computer effect modellers, can you do a test for digital interference the device may give off to some level?

All modelers seem to sound great these days. The biggest difference is the way they respond. The POD GO, in this example seems to have the same thing I didn't like about my POD HD with the dynamic range. In your example, the other two units seemed to have three different levels. Where as the POD only had two. There's pretty much only soft and loud without much in between if that makes sense.

There are several additional adjustments that you could have made on the FM3. For instance, the presence control might have helped you match some of the high end you were hearing with the real amp. I would have also checked what effect the transformer match and the bias controls in the other menus of the amp block would do to help match the sound and response more closely. Overall, both units sounded good.

Yes, you can set the Fractal until it sounds like the real amplifier but that means that every time you want to sound like the real amplifier, you need to have it next to you for to do the matching. Then.. Why do I want a device with which, I need to have a real amplifier to match the sound? Because watching this video, not even the potentiometer configuration is similar. When I buy a Fractal and pay 1300 euros I want to think that I don´t need to have the real amplifier next to me for to looking for the sound, something quite impossible with all the amplifiers that comes with fractal. I think it's better to look for the sound you have in mind instead of looking for the real amp sound. If you want a real amp sound, buy the real ampplifier!. Nice video!

Firstly Leo these videos are not just enjoyable but educational. Also you play so well with great feel and methodically explain thing 👍🏻 I'd have to agree with getting lot with modelling gear. I have modelling gear and software and you can end up in tweak and preset hell. Sometimes I just go into a few pedals and then into my Vox, the immediacy of this approach is great. That said being able to reamp is fantastic. The biggest difference in my opinion is using good quality IR's. I cant recommend OwnHammer IR's enough 👌🏼

Wow! this format of review is really nice. The Fm3 sounded really good, closer to the highs of the amp, but the POD Go seemed a little bit more natural, less compressed or lively? (i don't know how to describe it), at least from youtube jaj. Some extra digital compression may be affecting my perception. The amp feel seems totally different form both units but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps an overall comparison of the effects quality (in categories) can be a nice addition to the comparison format (considering that the effects are what the ear may notice a little bit more on the mix and that both are effect units and not only amp modelers). But I remember from the individual review that you were satisfied with the FM3's delays. Now having a better idea of the sound I'm thinking if it's worth...more than double price and the long long waiting. In corona times there are no gigs, but if we have some hope... 3 footswitches :'(. Thank you Leo for the great work and the great music and playing!

Thank you Alvaro, both for sharing your opinions and for your really great compliments! I really appreciate them!!! I do agree: a comparison of the effects would be nice...but for sure we would need to select few of them and I have also to figure out how to do it...in fact, for instance with the amp sounds we have a reference (...the real amp), where for delays and reverb it's more difficult to find a reference. I like FM 3 effects, and they are considered first in class also by some great guitarists (one for all...Steve Vai)...also Line 6 effects are nice...but Fractal effects are just a tiny bit more "aligned" to my taste... Wonderful comparison and even better playing! My FM3 should arrive the next week but after hearing the real Plexi I’m not that excited anymore 😉 I guess I will keep both the Helix and the Kemper, however, because I’m a nerd, but at the end of the day they’re all nice toys...ehm...tools 👍🏻 Knobs position will always be different from the real deal because of the tapers that may vary between units. In this respect and from a nerd standpoint, I prefer Kemper’s approach, which basically let you post-process the profiles with a “smart” eq, so knobs are just Kemper’s knobs, nothing to do with the real amp. All that said I’ve watched your other comparison video, with the Kemper and the FM3, and I was surprised about how bad the Kemper sounded vs the real amp (bad profile?).

PS: su Helix metto tranquillamente i delay in parallelo, su Pod non so perché mi manca 😉

I guess the one you should get greatly depends if it's available, uh? The FM3 is better but you can't get one (new) right now. You can go buy the Line 6 basically anywhere / anytime. ( at the time of this post). I bought my FM3 on Reverb at a premium. However, I will not compromise the tonal difference between Fractal units vs all the others plus i wanted mine now.

When you compare gear using IRs you should use the same IR loader. Same IR will sound different in Fractal's software vs Wall Of Sound by 2 Notes. So, for getting the best comparison, dont use IR blocks on the devices, rather only as a plugin.
@damiendelvallee72564 жыл бұрын
That could be interesting, but i also want to know if the ir loader of the device is good.
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hi Damien, you've read my mind: that's the reason why I preferred to use the internal IR loaders of the modelers. Thank you for your message!
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hi George, I see your point, but this time I wanted to let you also hear the differences of the IR loaders of the modelers. Actually it's not 100% sure that the differences are coming only from the IR loaders, but they are a part of the equation, and I wanted to try to you give you an idea of the whole behaviors of the modelers... But for sure your approach would have been another test to be done...but the video was becoming way too long. Thank you for your message!
@giominor884 жыл бұрын
@@LeoGibsonGtr Agreed. My point is that if we wanna test how close they sound to the "real deal" we must use the same output source (IR + IR loader). Otherwise, I do agree.

Leo - Do any of the Line 6 or Helix Effects Processors have a setting that will "globally" account for different types of guitar pickups? I have a guitar with Humbuckers, another with Single-coils, and another with a Piezo. Do I have to modify individual patches to suit each type of pickup, or is there a way to adjust a global setting? I see that the Pod Go does have a "Global EQ" but it is not a "saveable" setting, and is intended to adjust for various room/venue acoustics. I think it be a good Idea if there were at least a few saveable Global EQ settings to accommodate different guitars/pickups. But, maybe I'm not thinking of this in the right way. I would appreciate any insights you have on the subject. Thanks

You could make one general patch and then modify that patch for each type of pickups you will use

It's not nearly double Leo, it's at least over double & possibly 3 times the price. And that's before you factor in the cost of an external MIDI controller with footpedal so you can gig it! In the US Pod Go is around $449.99 (Sweetwater etc) - the FM3 USA pricing is unclear - back in April it was being predicted at Direct Price: $999.99 (List Price: $1399.99) but I've not seen this for sale yet with any clear current pricing. Also, Pod Go is NOT a Helix so its a bit of a meaningless comparison when you're comparing features - it's like comparing a £20,000 Ford with a £45,000-60,000 Mercedes or BMW and saying the Merc or BMW is better - there's a shock - doh!!! C'mon Leo, I love your vids but I think this is a bit of an odd comparison - at least compare it with something like Helix LT or even the dual chip Helix Stomp. The Pod Go and FM3 are aimed at completely different market segments and use. Personally I think the Pod Go has stood up very respectably indeed and is infinitely better value for most users!!
