I'm a fairly good size dude. I'm about 6'3" 215. I don't go looking for trouble and I am very humble. It's just not worth it nowadays. I'm 36 years old so I grew up in a different generation where you would often see people handle conflicts 1 on 1, no weapons, shake hands after. It's not like that anymore. People will pull a gun on you before they will fight you one on one. I know some basic fighting techniques and submission moves, but I am far from an expert. I just avoid conflict unless I have no choice. You have to check your ego at the door.

Being able to fight in these types of circumstances where you're dealing with potential criminals who have done hard time doesn't really matter. That's because if these guys are about that life they're probably going to go very quickly to weapons. Wrestling, jiu jitsu, kickboxing training etc. Isn't gonna help you deflect a blade or a bullet. If anything having expectations of hand to hand combat is probably putting ones self in a more dangerous and compromised position. So my uncle who is a trained MMA fighter for the last 15 years and his best friend is a sort of body builder (he just doesn’t do any competitions or post online as he doesn’t care for it). They always banter with one another they have about 20+ years chemistry together. I had a similar situation at work a few years back. There was this big black dude who always got into arguments and fights with people at work. He had been to prison and everyone was scared of him. Not gonna get into the specific situation that started our argument as it wouldn’t make sense unless you work in my industry, but the altercation went like this. I was about 15 ft away from him at least. He said “get the f*ck outta my face with that shit”. I know I didn’t give the context, but I was absolutely heated at this point. So I said “what!?” and he said it again. So I said “I’m not in your face”, so I walked right up to him, and said “NOW I’m in your face, what are you gonna do about it?”. He said “we can step outside if you want to handle this”, which was weird because we were already outside, but he meant outside the “yard” aka off the property of where we work. I immediately said “alright lets go, and took off walking towards the gate”. He hesitantly followed after I took like 10 steps, but we got about halfway and he stopped and said “man screw this” and turned around and walked back. I simply said “yeah that’s what I thought” and that was the end of that specific altercation. In that moment I was absolutely ready to lose my job because I was so pissed off that the only thing flowing through my body was adrenaline and rage. He didn’t stay at that job very long after that. Doubt it had anything to do with our altercation though, but glad he left. He was a loudmouth trouble maker who just was extremely obnoxious constantly. Anyway, the point is, there’s a lot of people whose bark is all they have, they have no bite. And it’s typically in my experience the bigger dudes and the more intimidating looking ones that don’t actually wanna throw down when it comes down to it. Because they’re used to nobody ever actually wanting to fight them and just being intimidating enough to scare people into submission.

This event reminds me of a situation involving myself and an Olympic power lifter in the 80s. I knew his girlfriend and was happy to see her for the first time in a few years. The powerlifter was not happy, in his eyes he was looking at a skinny weakling. He tried to intimidate me, he was unaware that I was a welterweight kickboxer, with a background in grappling. When he tensed up like he was going to strike me, his girlfriend told him that I was a fighter. Little did he know, I had sized him up and was ready to take him out. Just as he saw me as a skinny weakling, in my eyes he was a fat slow strongman, in perfect position to be KO'd. Muscles do not equate to being able to win a fight,, especially a street fight!!

Running security is 99% diffusing and avoiding any potential threats or issues. Im 6'2 170 I ran security for 10 years at some of the biggest clubs in Baltimore and DC and the reason I was good was because I'm a good talker and I know how too calm people down. You're point Shaun I precisely agree with from personal experiences. Every fight I've had which I didn't instigate rather I accepted begrudgingly I then went on to win by domination , well 9/10 occasions.
