Patch Notes:
I started putting the 'Fragments' patch together after getting Marbles (Cara) a little while ago (and Triple Sloths). I wanted to pair it with Sinfonion and my Ladik Skipper modules to create a generative piece that changes very slowly and subtly over a long period of time. While making the patch, I came up with an idea to create random evolving weather, which was going to be much more complicated but ended up being quite simple to patch, which I'll detail below. As some people noted, the patch ended up sounding similar to 'Waiting for Cousteau' by JMJ, one of my favourite ambient pieces of all time. Although that wasn't intentional when I started, it inspired a lot of my decisions. The patch took about a week to do, with most of that to fine tune many aspects, especially probability and setting attenuation and offsets to get just the right range of CV, so that things never became too dense and that there would be natural peaks and valleys throughout the piece (thanks to Triple Sloths).
Vector: Part 1. sends notes to Sinfonion Ch 1 out to DPO pitch input, gate from Vector goes to Ladik skipper (low probability), to Delta V EG, which opens filter on Vult Freak. No VCA is used, so that there's always some subtle bass audible. Decay on Delta V is randomly modulated via B-out of Ultra Random.
Pamela's New Workout: 6 channels of random, with very low probability (RSKIP set high around 92%+) go out to Bitbox Micro to randomly, and rarely trigger various pre-made samples (non-looped) with Toggle enabled, so that sometimes they may stop short but fade out slowly (long release).
Marbles/Cara: X1 into Sinfonion Ch 2 In - Out to Disting Ex 1/vct input 1. Marbles X2 to Sinfonion Arp In - Out to Rings v/oct input. Marbles X3 to Sinf Ch2 In - Out Dist. Ex Input 2, for 2 voice polyphonic playback of Spitfire Labs Music Box. T1 Out to Sinf. Ch2 trigger input, split to Skipper 4 input. T2 Out to Sinf. Ch3 trig. input, split to Skipper 3 in. T3 out to Skipper 2 in. Skipper 2 out (3 copies) - 1 RndStp input - 2 Rings Strum in - 3 Sinf. Arp Clk input. Trig Bias around 10 o'clock for more triggers to Disting Ex.
Ladik Skippers (2 of): probability is CV modulated (small range) by Apathy X output of the Triple Sloths (multed x4 for each skipper CV in). This is for slow, evolving dynamics of the bass filter EG, Disting EX Spitfire music box (uses two Skippers), and Rings. This way there would sometimes be moments when stuff isn't triggering very much, and sometimes the opposite.
Triple Sloths: Apathy X - Skippers CV in. Y - Doepfer dual VC CF ch1. crossfades between two weather samples. Intertia X - VC CF ch.2 crossfades between second two weather samples. Y - Dual VCA CV ch.1 Input for dynamic weather overall volume. Z - Ch.2 VCA for the second weather volume. Torpor X - Dry/Wet balance of FX Aid XL Blackhole reverb. Y - VCA in on Praga to control bass volume.
Assimil8or: 4x mono samples into Doepfer crossfader (light rain, heavy rain, rain with thunder, harbour sample). All samples on the A8 are looped and constantly playing.
Ultra Random: Ura A out to Delta V Attack. B out to Delta V Decay R Flux out to DPO Shape input.
Ochd: slow LFO into Arbhar Scan (all layers). 2nd slow LFO into RndStp ch1 Sample input. Ch 1 Unipolar out into Timewarp (for slew) Timewarp out to Rings Shape input for pitch bends. 3rd med-slow LFO into Rings position input. 4th fast LFO into Rings FM (vibrato)
DPO: Square+Final out slow LFO into Angle to 2hp Mix out to Vult Freak (Stabile Low Pass)
Rings outputs through Magneto for subtle delay, wow/flutter and small mix of spring reverb
Arbhar through E520 (Chowder Delay) for some occasional stutter/repeats and pitching
Lubadh stereo loop (improv with Wavestate) pitched down 1 octave plays constantly
Disting Ex Music Box samples through FX Aid XL (Blackhole reverb)
Recorded direct to DAW.
Video shot on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k with a Sigma 18-35 lens. Editing and colour grading done in Da Vinci Resolve.

We need a properly functional companion app, and it shouldn't be too hard to search by lists of search terms in the form of selected channel names. It's really all we need, as doing this will, in effect, exclude all the unwanted dished up crap we get, to the exclusion of what we most want.

The sound of robotic neurones firing. Calibrating to the frequency of alien transmissions. Futuristic space travel ambiance. Star language. Digitally accessing lost memories. Neurological hacking to delete harmful coping mechanisms. Blurry sporadic film clips of a distant past. The sound of everything and nothing, purgatory, the journey to rebirth, navigating from unconsciousness to consciousness. The sound of a higher being coding existence. Love this. Definitely evokes an emotional response and some interesting imagery. Excellent soundtrack for gaming, creative sessions, or fantasy/sci-fi reading. To me, this piece became quietly suggestive of danger, the unknown, instability, and determination. Crisis and Hope.

Finally, I "get it" from a big picture standpoint when it comes to modular. The idea of purely ephemeral pieces wherein the "patch" and the "piece" are one. Months of "programming" married to months of composing all with a view to something that can never be recreated once unpatched. Effing brilliant. Honestly, this is watershed moment for me; I don't know why I couldn't see it before this.

@@secondbeta9563 I can't imagine the absolute patience required to set something like this up. I create music KIND OF similar to this, but with just a MIDI synth keyboard. Im not well-off enough to afford tech like this. I can't read music, don't know music theory, and such...i just compose off the cuff, and once a song is played, that's it...it will never be played again, unless I record it. This music, however, is absolutely perfect. This is the music I hope one day I can compose. Because, look at all the POSITIVE comments about it.

He left out ambient engineering which shocked me for this style of music. Guess he just didn't want it? ...or possibly he's not well acquainted with it? This is so good! I am fascinated by the algorithmic approach to creating this piece with what I *assume* has been created using a battery of carefully crafted and cadenced looping CV and MIDI signals orchestrated by some kind of randomization. I've been listening for hours. I can concentrate on my work without distraction. But also there is enough space in the resulting composition that I can appreciate the details and nuances of the sonic texture and random melodic progressions developing without being pulled away from what I am concentrating on. Plus when I take a break it is interesting enough to just enjoy the piece with full concentration. Really cool on so many levels! The Algorithm did me a solid this time. :)

I have spent most of my life dreaming of making and recording music and I never successfully have. I went to school and got a writing degree which I have never been able to use. I work hard at my retail job and take care of my partner who cannot work. I have been burned out and depressed for a few years now, but I recently started my journey teaching myself how to make ambient music. I have minimal gear and only free software/plug-ins as I can find them. I have found myself among new friends who are doing what I have always wanted to do, and they are encouraging me along. They're good people. I hope one day I can have the hardware to make something on this level, but in the meantime, I am just grateful to have this to listen to along with just a tiny glimmer of hope for my own future. @@EddieKMusic That's debatable. Not only is "it's funny because it's true" is an entire category of humor but I'd even go as far as to say *most* jokes are "right". The point of a joke is to break expectations, though, so we might just be seeing two sides of the same coin here.

@Giovanni Macias Yes, the kind of thing that could drive one mad. People shouldn't use words in symbolic ways, or ironic. But who knows how to define witchcraft in absolute terms anyhow? Might as well ban the word. witchcraft: 1a : the use of sorcery or magic (b : communication with the devil or with a familiar) 2 : an irresistible influence or fascination magic: : an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source : having seemingly supernatural qualities or powers : giving a feeling of enchantment

I am so unsure of exactly what it is i have stumbled across? But for once, and i mean once, i owe the youtube algorithm a cold one. Now, onto what im seeing. Are you telling me, this pile of lights and wires, which could or could not launch a icbm strike, is making this music, by itself? Or has it been made by the human i see passing in front of it, and its on some sort of recording? Cause if this thing?( sorry i dont know WHAT it is yet) is just DOING this? Im throwing away my guitar, its all over. Then an all out campaign MUST be initiated to buy this device from the owner. Then we take it to Elon Musk. He figures out how to power the dang thing, put a transmitter antenna from hell on it, and shoot this wonder to the moon. The first true cosmic radio, transmitting this vibe for however long it can. Please let aliens here something like this, and not rap music...

Well it doesn't just DO this, without a ton of patching it up the correct way and setting everything right and placing the rules and scale that it must stick to..other than that, it's mostly spitting out random crap which is quantized to pleasing notes in the scale I chose.

I volunteered myself to set one of these massive Moog's for David Crowder's keyboardist at my old church. Some teenager asked me what I was doing and all I could come up with was, "You see that digital keyboard over there? This is that, except it's all analog and your imagination." He and 6 others watched me set this thing up for 2 hours. He had 140 patches.

Is it deterministic, or would it be different on each performance? I imagine you could create something pseudo-random, but complex enough to seem random, that could be reproducible in the same way each time when using a same set of seed values, but could be completely different over the duration with a different set of seed values / settings.
@stateazure
@stateazure 7 ай бұрын
This would be random, a lot of the modulation and notes are randomly pulled from noise. I'm sure you could make a deterministic patch of this style with the correct modules, maybe turing machines with lockable sequences/modulation. But those modules tend to loop over very short periods of time, so it would be noticeably repetitive.
@cvrart
@cvrart 7 ай бұрын
@@stateazuremakes sense. I guess one may need to use a software approach to really guarantee determinism in a single "performance". VERY cool, btw!
