Yes, I get a fragrance and boom, no more interest and then there I go to buy another one. Also, all the time I spend watching KZbin fragrances or reading in Fragrantica and going to shops to smell fragrances... I could use that time on improving my physical heatlh (much needed at the moment), or reading or doing a lot of other things. I own 65 full bottles, 20 or so decants and more than a hundred of samples. For what? And then reselling, feeling overwhelmed or guilty, ugh. For me it's a shopping addiction I have redirected to fragrances and the daily habit to spend hours within the world of these liquids. Best of all!

Great subject for discussion Claire. It's a precarious balance of living for the now and enjoying each day but not jeopardising savings for the future. I think having a sound budgeting strategy is key. Allow a set amount per month for fragrances/luxuries whilst still saving for the future. Having said that, it's all easier said than done so videos like this are a massive help!

I want to go on a low buy to save for other goals. I have a channel; but, I have only done scent videos twice because I know my personality and if I start with hauls as fragrance lover, it won't be good. Luckily I don't like most of the expensive popular common designer ones everyone pushes on KZbin. Niche ones smell nice; but, my budget would be blown with those ones. I only have five full size bottles and the rest are travels sizes, mini sizes, or body sprays.

The problem with perfume addiction It's similar to alcohol addiction because perfume is wine to the nose. The other thing is finding your fragrance holy trinity, that is a perfume that's tailored for your skin dna, you'll know it when you smell it. That's where the expense comes in. Best suggestions is to buy samples only, and really test them in hot and cooler climates of course see how the scent effects you and others in your scent bubble. Don't buy similar smelling fragrances waste of money. This is what I have learned over the years.

Thank you for this video. Particularly in the last year I shifted my focus onto frag collecting and although I can “afford” it its what I call stupid crazy… I think the whole FOMO and brands discontinuing lines and iconic frags adds to the hysteria…. Becoming a “collector” I had fo tell myself “no new frag houses” … many KZbin’s keep showing the “hauls” and don’t address the dark side of fragrance collecting

This is such a tricky subject. Perfume prices have gone up, social media encourages buying more. The deeper one’s interest in perfume, the harder it is to be satisfied with “lesser priced” options. Buying samples, to my mind, is silly. $60 here, $40 there, and you don’t like any of them so...money is “lost”. My solution for now, is staying away from IG, and as Andy Trauer says, “trust your nose”. I’ve gone into a bit of a bubble, not exposing myself to everything that is new, so as not to be tempted. I still read a lot about perfume on blogs and Fragrantica, but I have also found some “holy grail” scents, so I really don’t feel I’ll be able to find better than what I have.
@Smurfygurly

You are so right, the Instagram and KZbin stuff creates interest, some sampling options are so expensive but I usually don’t do expensive samples and stick to the good value ones (especially if they give you money off a full bottle). I’ve got to own it, I’m part of the problem!

letting go of reality when it comes to spending... this hit home so much ! i have always been so strict on my spending, but with fragrances i let go.. but i make sure that i pay everything off every month... rule #1... so true... it is an experience... a stimulation.. that's why i love fragrances... luckily i do not give in to the feeling of FOMO and wanting to have the same ones as others.. but still... i felt so disappointed at myself at the end of 2020 with how much i spent for the 6 months... and insane amount that i could have SAVED... "do i have to get everything i want?" - that is a question i really have to ask every time i think of adding a bottle. it is rather easy saying NO to everything else... i guess i just felt like i NEEDED to try some new things for the channel.. but really, this is the main reason why I decided to be on a no buy and to EDIT my collection and explore it more :) thank you for this !!!

Such an important video. The whole fragrance reviewer thing can throw you down a dangerous rabbit-hole. Especially because, as you said, a lot of fragcomm is about showing off what you have. It puts a bad taste in my mouth feeling pressure to show off, although I wouldn't describe myself as inadequate in any way - rather, I am hesitant to show my entire collection because it is by no means necessary to have so many perfumes. 🌹

Yes, that's the thing, us reviewers and serious hobbyists do amass quite a lot, but it isn't necessary. It's not necessary to have so many and it's also not necessary to spend so much on one fragrance. There are amazing fragrances out there at affordable prices, but when you fall down the rabbit hole you're done for!!

This is true. It’s only by Gods help that I no longer have a driving push to overspend on fragrances. Whilst I have a list, I’ve made a financial vision to utilise others, through events like birthdays, Christmas to get these fragrances and not break the bank. I’m only 17 going on 18 and I’m going to uni this year therefore, establishing discipline around spending money on things that I want will set me up for the future.

I'm planning to wait until after Christmas, when fragrances are on sale, to even look for fragrances (except at yard sales, estate sales, thrift stores, etc., where fragrances rarely turn up but can be a great deal when they do). Before Christmas, I hope to sell a few things (other than fragrances) I have sitting around that I'm not going to use but there are collectors who may buy them. Hopefully the proceeds from that will mostly if not fully cover the after-Christmas shopping. I want to basically convert assets I won't use into assets that I'll sometimes use.

I've got my spending well under control. I put heavy (sometimes ridiculous) criteria on my wish lists which brings it down to maybe a couple of fragrances I REALLY want. I think the people most at risk are starting KZbinrs who see the bigger KZbin channels do "50 fragrances in 5 min" and "massive £1000 haul" videos. This is an expensive hobby if you want new content.

It's a very great topic. Lately, I feel that I spend way too much on perfumes. I manage to justify it every time. I'm not in debt and anything like that because my number one rule is to pay all the taxes the day I get my salary. Although spending on fragrances, I don't spend so much on clothes and other stuff. Of course, now, during the lockdown, I don't need those clothes either. The biggest problem is saving for the future. I always try to put aside some money for big buyings, like an apartment one day. Still, I just don't manage to save a significant amount of money because some unexpected expenses appear, like repairing a car, etc. Or, when I do save more money, I spend it on holidays (when there is no covid, of course). It would probably be smart to put aside more, but then I should cut my expenses on frags completely. And then I have a mixed feeling. On the one hand, I want to feel safe about my future. On the other hand - why live at all if there are no little pleasures right now? I mean, the pandemic took away too many fun things already. So I see the only way out: try to find a way to earn more. Some freelancing, investing in stocks, etc. And when managing to earn more - not spending it on perfumes, but putting aside.

Some days the joy of owning a big, beautiful, expensive collection can be overshadowed by a feeling of guilt, at least for me... My advice would be to stick to buying samples which are way cheaper and get to try 10-30 perfumes in a sample haul relatively cheaply. You are then free to decide which scents you really love and save up to buy them. Fragrance is something that loses value instantly as soon as you unbox it, very few perfumes go up in value as they are a perishable product. Unlike someone who collects expensive watches that can go up in value over the decades.
@Smurfygurly
@Smurfygurly 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, which is why often I purchase second hand perfumes if I can to get them cheaper and if I decide to resell avoid much of a loss.

It was a way of trying to overcome the Covid situation while being locked🔒 at home. I agree that some people lose control of their budget and I think this is easy to happen. I have come to a point of asking myself whether I need to buy so many clothes, cosmetics and especially fragrances. I know I don't . Good luck Claire! I’m with you! Definitely on a low-buy this year. Last year I think I was shopping out of boredom when we couldn’t leave our houses, and strangely, anxiety which makes no sense to me because if things are uncertain than why would I dip into my savings and make them more so??? The brain does weird things sometimes for sure. I did fail at it a bit in January, having bought 5 fragrances that All came up at the same time, I felt guilty about that even though these were fragrances I knew I wanted and would wear, but pushing ahead with a good start to Feb. :) I’m thankful that I haven’t racked up debt, but I’m mad at myself for whittling down my savings and the headway I could have otherwise made on my mortgage in 2020. Lost opportunity. BUT onwards and upwards xx

It's a difficult call.. My dad was a financial advisor. He has always said, the cheapest way of ever borrowing money is a mortgage. I used to be in a club where we just invested in ten pounds a month in stocks and shares. Great fun. What I do is a couple of accounts which I put into, at the beginning of the month when I'm paid. One account for household bills. One for hopefully holiday and one for my hobby and one for emergency access savings. It's only small amounts and because the bank do it for me, I don't feel it, so to speak and it eventually mounts up. Good sound advice though, you gave 👍 I hasten to add, I know you wasn't telling us what to do but going by the comments, we all appreciated this video. I have come to the conclusion, that since I am not a reviewer, I have really no need to purchase more than I already own. Or at least not buy a lot more than I own. I do however have a list of fragrances I would like to own, but I don't know if I am ever going to buy them, but the list is limiting my impulsive purchases, since they are planed purchases. Luckily I have never taken up loans or spend more than I have. But I can see how it could be a problem. A good video again Claire. This is a great reality check for and by FragComm! Dang! This hobby can be so expensive! I sometimes watch haul videos and jokingly calculate the dolla dolla bills behind those bottles. Definitely recommend getting into stocks and consider robo-investing / automated management so you don't have to micro-manage your investments. One strategy to saving/spending, that is quite known but not as popular, is to allocate twice the amount of a purchase. This helps in determining if you can (wisely) afford a purchase and if you can, half can go to savings/investments and the other can go to the purchase. Thanks for touching on this topic, Claire! Cheers!

One approach I like to take (maybe I should ALWAYS only buy fragrances using this approach) is to sell something I already have sitting around, that is taking up space and that I'll probably never use, and use the proceeds to buy fragrances. That way, you keep your things tidy and efficient, and you don't have to dig into your bank account. You basically convert assets you don't use into assets you will sometimes use.

I started a stocks and shares ISA last year and it's the best thing I've ever done. I'm 36 and I wish I'd have started in my twenties. I do overpay my mortgage but I got scared when interest rates looked like they were going to go up in May 2019 and fixed my mortgage rate for 5 years (at the same time slashing the term from 18 years left to 10 years) so I can't overpay more than 10% of the total balance. Overpaying saves you sooo much money in the long term though so any amount is worth it. I work in science so my job is really unstable because grants are only ever for 3 or 5 years if you are really lucky, so long term planning and low spending is the sensible way to go...

Very relevant subject Claire. I've definately had to be more mindful of very careful and sometimes extreme budgeting since the pandemic started. The industry I work in has been practically shut down for a year. I simply can't afford the expensive luxuries at the moment and in the fragrance world have enjoyed discovering the cheapie gems if I've been in the position to be able to treat myself....and also enjoying the more high end fragrances I already own. It's easy to see how quickly the buying could get out of hand. Thank you for the upload as always. :) xx

@@Smurfygurly Thank you! ❤️ Good luck to you as well. I’ve sold three this month so far, I’m happy about that. I desperately needed to declutter. I want to get some money back into my pockets.

I think this video is so on point! That's exactly what my husband and I do with overpaying our mortgage every month, and it's helpful. :) I collect perfumes to wear, so I don't buy them very often, because I'm happy with the perfumes I own. When a fragrance I like is $200 and above it has to be extra amazing, at this point, for me to spend that kind of money. Perfumery is meditative and inspiring to me, it's not about showing off. And as much as I love it, I still don't wear it every single day, cause sometimes I don't like to shower. :) Thank you Claire for this insightful video! :)

A great piece of advice Claire and food for thought I think sampling is the best way to go once you have a good collection the thing is when most people here how fantastic a certain fragrance is well it’s only natural that you want it but as we know it’s all subjective so I try and sample the more expensive ones and try and be a bit more selective

Thanks and definitely we should sample first if we can, expensive blind buy fails are so sad.

Never ever buy a non essential on credit. I'm lucky that I have enough fragrance to last me a lifetime and more, so I am never desperate for a new bottle, but can buy when I want and when is sensible. I prefer looking at my savings rise, and with the current situation being furloughed from all of my jobs, it's sensible to hold back. I am medically very unlikely to reach retirement age, but those savings will be there for if I need them, or when I go, for someone else (to probably waste!). Samples, bargains and quality above it's price point is my way to go, when I purchase again. I do agree with testosterone flying around - it seems everybody is trying to out-do everybody. I'm happy with my large, albeit inexpensive/bargain find collection and nobody should ever get into debt for luxury. Happy Retirement in 11 years!

Excellent advice, Claire. One is never too old to start saving and investing for retirement. One of the best investment strategies is dollar/pound cost averaging, where you invest the same amount on a regular basis, in stocks or mutual funds, to smooth out the peaks and valleys, the volatility that can happen in the markets. You use your money to make money, and the funds will build in your investment account over time. Good luck to you!

It's a tough one. I have a bit of the opposite which is I rarely treat myself and that's also not good. I think there has to be a balance like with anything, but I certainly get buyers remorse with blind buys thus why I stopped it
