If enemies aren't fooled by the robe and staff, then perhaps actually using a book to cast some magic might help. In 5e, you only need 13 Wisdom or Intelligence to qualify for the Ritual Caster feat, which results in you getting a book that you can use for collecting spells that you can cast (as rituals). Also, I've now got the mental image of a barbarian ritual casting Alarm, but instead of magically producing the sound of a hand bell, it's the barbarian suddenly screaming.

This reminds me of a story a friend told where he was part of a group of viking barbarians, and they were going to raid a monastery for loot as part of their invasion campaign. Only when they encountered a bunch of the monks and old men in prayers, were suddenly surprised when the old men squared up, took their staffs, and started attacking them! Running along walls and shit. It turns out, in the setting, monks are also *monks* .

@@markermage I ran a pure fighter build, but my fighter cast spells using magic items made by the artificer in the party. We would lure enemies close to him thinking he was a soft and squishy wizard or sorcerer. Only for him to open his cloak to reveal platemail and a mace.

I play a lizard man wizard with AC 20, high dex with shield(lizardmen can craft shields from fallen enemies and have no problem lore wise with using humans), and always prepped shield spell for an emergency 25AC when I need it. Really helps you get through the early levels.

Don't cry like a baby, it's a fair price to pay for potentially unlimited access to every spell in existence. I love Wizards. You just have to compensate in Constitution and Dexterity. It is not necessary to invest so much in Intelligence from the beginning, with only 16 at the beginning it is already too much. According to the rules of D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder 1e you gain 1 point for one of your basic characteristics every 4 levels... so starting at level 1 with 15 Intelligence at level 20 you could put your Intelligence at 19 and you would have access up to spells of level 9 (maximum), and from level 16 (raising your Intelligence to 18) you would access those of level 8. That is good/OP enough. All this without taking into account creating or finding magical objects that raise your basic characteristics, which in the systems I mentioned can raise a characteristic up to a maximum of +6. There is little point in starting at level 1 with 20 Intelligence and reaching 24 at level 20.
