Good to know it's an improvement I'm tired of trying to convince people FRAM is more than fine with regular maintenance intervals I work with a guy who swears FRAM filters are garbage based on some obscure test he won't elaborate on that I suspect to be biased and outdated. He runs WIX XP filters and Valvoline full synthetic but he goes 4 or 5+ months between oil changes he just waits to hit 3K and then changes it. He short cycles it hard too, half a mile to and from work twice a day.

Champion Labs make Mobil 1 and K&N filters. They also make other brands. Pretty much any filter designed for synthetic oil will be OK. Personal preference aside, I follow the severe service mileage suggestions. The Boss is correct in saying that extended oil change intervals do harm, especially on boosted applications.

I was just wondering the other day who was making the motor oil for Fram. Now I know. Thanks Ford Boss! Also, I have to say from personal experience and I have been changing oil since I was a kid and I’m 52 years old. I also worked on cars and trucks for a living for 17 years and I’ve NEVER had a Fram oil filter cause engine problems or damage on anything I owned or anything I put one on. The KEY IS TO CHANGE THEM REGULARLY. I think any good mechanic will agree with me.

The Fram PH (orange can) was bad many years ago, but over the last 10 years on BITOG there have been only a few that have looked bad after an extended OCI, but none have "come apart" like many seem to still think. There have been way more Purolators and Motorcraft oil filters that have torn media posted on BITOG than Fram orange cans. And the Fram PH has an efficiency of 95% @ 20u, which is pretty good efficiency, and it has a silicone ADBV. Many PH filters cut open and posted after 5000 - 8000 miles of use that look fine. The "orange can of death" will never die, even though there's no real problem with it these days.

Rick, my perspective goes back to 1964. At 17 I used Fram filters and Havoline 10-40. Everyone back then said I was a fool, the filters were shit and the Texaco oil was shit..yada, yada, yada. I changed oil back the every 2k. Just regular college kid driving. NEVER ONCE HAD AN ISSUE, EVER on my engines. Now I know oil in newer cars are more critical than in the days of the SBC. I have a 20 year old Mercury and I use synthetic and motorcraft filter. I am too gimped up at 74 years so I hire the job out. I would drive this car anywhere. Of course I take excellent care. I have even been told by fan boys that motorcraft filters are crap. Yeah right.... Did you ever notice all these so called experts are not engineers? I change every 3k, because that is 6 months use. Yeah I could go 5k, but oil is cheap vs engines. This car will outlast me.

I'm not thrilled about the 'cardboard' substrate they use instead of the metal endcaps everyone else uses, and even Fram themselves use on their higher end filters. I read their reasoning on their site (it bonds better then the metal), which may be true BUT they when don't they use it for their higher end filters? Besides that, on these filter taredown videos I have always noticed the fram seems to be somewhat sloppy with it's adhesive compared to the rest. Sometimes the end caps are somewhat off center. Now perhaps that means nothing but it just seems to indicate that quality is not their strong suit. So yes they are around forever but I just don't like what I see in their orange line of filters. There higher end ones are much better though the amount of adhesive seems a bit messy, so again, it does make me think about their quality of workmanship.

I will not feel comfortable changing to another brand after having so much success with fram. I have always used Castrol 530 conventional until it was no longer made then moved on to 5:30 synthetic blend. Never had an issue with the engine and it is very silent can hardly hear it when it is on. I now change the oil between 5 and 6,000 MI considering I'm using synthetic blend. I would imagine that since a lot more engines are using drop in canister filters today in lieu of spin on filters a lot of filter manufacturers have had to up their game since they can't hide a crappy filter inside a fancy spin on canister. That being said I don't think I could ever bring myself to install a fram filter on any engine and trust it to do what it's designed to do. Years ago when the "orange death can" fram was the only filter they made I got burned by some quality control issues more than once and since then I just haven't been able to bring myself to use another one. Motorcraft, Baldwin, fleetguard, Donaldson, hengst, Mann-hummell and wix are what I get and wix seems to have gone downhill to the point I really don't want to use them anymore either. Honestly I'm really not sure it matters which one you buy unless there is some gross quality control problem as long as you use good oil and change it regularly you usually don't have many problems. Great video by the way! Very informative.

@GainingDespair2 жыл бұрын
Yeah "lets put the orange can of death on the car, cheapest conventional oil, 20k miles easy." later followed by "What has Fram done to my motor?!?!?!" A term often used in marketing isn't who can make the best product, it's who can make the best product at a certain price point. In other words anyone can produce an amazing product, the question is will folks be willing to pay for it. The goal with marketing is to be as competitive as possible, you do that by either being the cheapest, or you make the best possible product at a few different price points.

Thanks for the insight. I actually watched Whip City's video first, then yours. There is talk on BITOG that the new media is in fact cheaper, and being a synthetic blend, is prone to tearing. There is a thread on there where the Fram Ultra (and others) was tested by Andrew at Ascent Filtration Testing, with outstanding results. I was a regular user of Purolator Pure One due to the high efficiency, then went to the Boss, full synthetic, but has less efficiency. That test changed my opinion of Fram. What is your opinion on the likelihood of this new media tearing? I believe the older Pure One had a synthetic blend media, and had tearing issues about 7-8 years ago.

Then you are commenting on the new one I can't keep up with all the videos I have and I'm not even sure what the point behind this conversation is with me how do you spell the filters better and it shows to be even of they're quality If you're talkin about synthetic blend media being prone tearing then you're talking about 90% of the filters out there so you should be scared to use any of them I don't know i just try to help people the best I can to sift through all the BS that's out there that people put out because they're biased
@bobt8972 жыл бұрын
@@FordBossMe Seems to me the full synthetic media is flimsy and needs support, the new media has a more rigid backing not needing a screen backing. The additional room allowed more media, more densely packed to support itself. The rigid media being more perpendicular to the tube adding strength. I don't know the physical structure of the older Purolator Pure One filters with tearing issues, I'm presuming they were less densely packed. I see your narrative is directed at haters with blind loyalty to certain brands, that's silly. I was "loyal" to Purolator, as their P1 had excellent efficiency at a reasonable price, so it would make sense the higher end Boss would be even better. Not. The fully synthetic media with a poly screen has less efficiency, presumably to allow for longer drain intervals, which apparently is their selling point. I understand the sifting through the BS and opinions based on unfounded rumors and speculation. Thanks for the help!

Great video.. Even the cheapest filter and oil at 3,000-4,000 miles is better than going 20,000+ miles on the $$$ oil/filters, in my opinion... I just drove a coworker's 12 F150(to get our pizzas) with the 5.0 V8 and 118,000 miles and the dash was warning for an "oil change required" and according to the sticker he was over by 9,000 miles.. he told me, "oil changes are so expensive, so I go 20,000 miles now, this new oil is proven to last and save you big $$"... Yes, I feel sorry for that engine...

On a 2019 VW Golf R Wolfsburg edition, I put in a Fram Tough Guard oil filter lol. It had the MANN, but the Tough Guard just plain looks comparable? Put in Mobil 1 0W-30 ESP....and you know what? I don't like it. It's burning it with only 15 miles on that oil, I swear. Level went way down, and I made SURE it wasn't from the cartridge filter soaking it up. No. It's burning it. Now, I want to try some regular API Valvoline 5W-30 synthetic Extended Protection with Fram's Ultra synthetic or Purolator Boss before MI winter hits. I'm just not impressed with Euro oil. I realize 0W has more VII's, but ESP is supposed to be liquid gold, oil of the gods. It isn’t. The Valvoline would introduce Moly and boron that engine has never seen before.

Hey I have an off topic question about ford techs. Why is it so difficult to talk directly to the techs. I do most of my own work but on the few times I’ve tried to go, it’s been a little annoying. It always feels like I’m playing telephone and hoping the person at the service desks conveys what I need. For example, I asked them to do a suspension and safety inspection and sign a paper for a track day. It said any certified tech can sign off on it after inspection but the tech apparently didn’t feel comfortable. Initially, I thought he was being lazy and didn’t want to do the 24 point inspection they advertise as a courtesy. But, I think he misunderstood what the sheet was saying and was afraid of liability or something. Also, I was willing to pay hourly if needed but I got the impression they didn’t want to do it. I still don’t know why and when I asked for documentation of the courtesy inspection, I got no actual info. Any thoughts?

Sometimes the dealership is worried about the text not handling the customers with kid gloves and maybe saying something disrespectful most of the time it's because a lot of technicians don't like talking a customer but there's a handful of us that really do actually more than a handful but the dealership plays it as it's a safety policy security policy so nothing gets out of control

Anecdotal, but I did an oil change a week ago on my Town Car and replaced a Mobil 1 210A with a Fram XG-2 (both Wal-Mart purchases). I notice at warm, stoplight idle, I'm getting about 4 to 8 lbs. higher oil pressure with the Fram (28 lbs. at about 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit ambient outside vs. 22 to 25 with the Mobil 1 - have an aftermarket VDO gauge set up). I'm running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-20 high mileage. Again, this isn't scientific, but my theory is that the denser filter media is creating a greater back pressure of oil in the engine while its running, which results in a higher pressure through the valve train - a good thing. I agree the Mobil 1 is a terrific filter, but I'm also really impressed by the XG-2. The analysis of the filter media is spot on too. If folks watch your earlier autopsy of the Purolator Boss, the filter media was a denser synthetic media. Mobil 1 uses a lighter cellulose/hybrid. Every other aspect of the Mobil 1 and the Boss are identical (anti-drain back valve, relief, canister thickness..). Difference is filter media. I agree with your analysis, great channel (and thank you for your service)

I have no allegiance to any one manufacture of oil filter, I've used FRAM, Mobile, and Purlator in the past. I usually buy what is reasonably cheap (not necessarily THE cheapest), change my oil every 5K (I use synthetic across the board) and have never had any problems. I find these fanboy wars to be as amusing as the video game console wars I see go on between Playstation, Micro$oft and Nintendo.

Indeed, people will find a reason to attack for whatever reason. It seems that you get a group of people together; say more than 10; things happen. I've been messing with computers for decades and still see this behavior. It usually resorts to nothing more than mudslinging in a short time and really accomplishes nothing. It also seems (to me) that allot of people like to take their favorite person's account of something as truth, rather than researching it on their own.

Hey Rich, What's wrong with using Motorcraft filters and Motorcraft Semi-synthetic oil, Just traded in our 2007 Eddie Bower Expedition we bought new with the problematic, for some folks, 5.4 that never gave me any issues on a new F-150 XLT with the 5.0, I did the 1'st oil change at 4908 miles and will do my changes every 5000 miles going forward just like I did on our 2007 EXPY, I just thought it was strange that a Ford tech would be pushing other brands of oil & filters , What are your thoughts on MC products, thank you.
