You have addressed a problem that has had me getting up from the ground and looking around to see who saw me clumsily fall. I think for me new forks with a bit more rake or angle. Thanks. Frank

I liked this video. If toe overlap is a problem when there are no fenders, then the situation is much worse with fenders. I had this problem on my touring bike set-up. The problem was solved when I changed to a fork with a slightly larger fork rake, or offset. The resulting longer wheel base made for a better ride too. Thanks for the video.

The solutions start at 6:49 Now il thinking of changing the fork, I don't mind if geometry change. I've been riding a bigger frame for years. Now I have a smaller frame. I need a longer/bigger angle fork what do I need to look for?

Well ... in spite of the nay sayers... (really makes me wonder why some folks just take the time to comment that they do not have this issue!) this video was indeed very useful for me. Have this issue on a properly sized bike and although i generally ride it in open roads not requiring sharp turns i have to get out of the city to get there ... and in doing that i do have sharp turns to manage. Caused me to crash twice. Changing the crank length is not an option for me due to the fact that they are actually a power meter. Changing the fork... well cannondale supersix evo black inc. you do not change the fork on that.... but the shoe... did not think about that. Long story short... changed the shoe (not size) and problem solved😌. Very useful video.thanks for sharing !!!

Although i ride size 50 frame, i wasn't having toe overlap before (crank length 167.5) until few days ago as i experiment with very rearward cleats positioning (almost mid foot) PLUS i put the cleats more toward the outside of the shoe (on narrow q-factor BB30 crankset) making my shoe much closer to the wheels. My long ride endurance improve by that cleats position which unload my calves but now i have to be careful when i do sharp turn. Not sure if it's worth it.
@ghcheong3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you use the bike for. A midfoot clear position is sometimes compensated/ paired with shorter cranks to a) avoid toe overlap & dangerous slow speed turns b) put the rider lower on the bike (slightly more aero and lower seatpost) But imo, most importantly, takes the calves out of the equation in the pedal stroke. This may or may not be a good thing for you, but a triathlon racer will appreciate slightly fresher legs off the bike into the run. *Disclaimer, I do bike riding most of the time and know nuts about the dynamics of triathlons,but it's my 2cents to my friends who wishes to compete in triathletes. * but similarly, if you are going to be walking quite alot off the bike, your calves will feel fresher, same goes for if you are doing big endurance rides/ touring/bike packing where time is not of the essence . The main disadvantage is that your peak torque and by extension, the number of revolutions you will need to get up to speed will increase significantly both due to the absence of calf participation and the shorter cranks.
@benjaminurzua8100 Жыл бұрын
@@ghcheongOr train really heavy the calves so one day they can withstand with ease the loads, and use them, the second heart, to help pumping blood to the legs.

First if you can turn on a roadbike left e.g. your left toe goes up an crank arm is in vertical position, and not in horizontal so overlap should not be a problem. Second i have long torso short legs and arms find me a safe and no overlap size frame where standover height is also ok....

+Mauricio Alsina Lee that makes absolutely no sense. I've been a roadie for over 20 years. I have a size 12.5 foot. It's a complete non issue.
@MauricioAlsinaLee8 жыл бұрын
My Own Spaceship It's not when you know how to ride. Mountain bikers tend to turn the front wheel side to side instead of just lying the bike when sprinting. When you do that, overlapping becomes an issue. But this new issue is because that biker do not know how to sprint. Believe me, I've seen riders falling because of that.
@NotALizardPerson818 жыл бұрын
+Mauricio Alsina Lee even if that's true, it shouldn't be a consideration when sizing a bike. There are far more important considerations. Kind of like how bike manufacturers design bikes with low bb drop just for newbies that don't know how to time pedal strokes. But hey, who wants a bike that feels stable and planted.
@maxrei6 жыл бұрын
Toe overlap on CX bikes pretty common due to the short wheel base and 'snappy' geometry, also confounded by cleat placement behind the ball of the foot. If you have large feet and shorter legs this will be ever more of an issue. That being said, even a big toe overlap isn't much of an issue unless you are trying to do a quick 180 on the trail.
@moniquevanwijngaarden31263 жыл бұрын
Xbery clear, thank you! My toe overlap is about 6 cm, I use it in both city where there are many traffic lights and also countryside because I live in Amsterdam. I have a fitted hand made titanium bike, could this overlap be solved in any of the ways you indicated, or is it too big and should I sell it. You told that the bent of the forefork changes the behaviour of the bike, I’d be interested to learn in what way. The steering is also fidgety, could this be improved in stability by a forward bent forefork as well? I would really appreciate your advise. Thank you! Monique

I think you are correct... I commuted quite a bit on my cyclocross with lots of toe overlap and it did not cause me any trouble once I knew it existed. If I am turning that sharply, I probably have my outside foot down and not pedalling. If I am pedalling with such a turn, my pedal force and cadence is likely extremely low. I did not consciously avoid it.

@nwimpney7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that fork is offset to the rear. That's just a visual effect. The fork will be sold with an offset, and that number is really all that matters. A larger offset will give more toe clearance, but will make the steering way twitchier too. In most cases I don't think toe overlap really matters. you learn fairly quickly to reposition your feet for low speed turns, and at high speeds you're not likely to ever turn it that far.

i don't really think this is an issue, all my bikes have this to some degree. it is only a problem when going very slow, like turning sharply through a narrow space. when moving slightly faster you just don't pedal for a moment. most agressive bikes have a short wheelbase so this is just part of the mix. my advice is it is not really a problem. many more things to worry about before this

@laszlozoltan50218 жыл бұрын
toe overlap can be dangerous when climbing steep sections, you might need to quickly swing your front wheel to keep from toppling over- catching the toe at this time might have serious consequences
@mindciller8 жыл бұрын
At 1-5mph I doubt it'd be serious, mostly just frustrating
@laszlozoltan50218 жыл бұрын
mindciller no, topple over at low speed, you put your arm out which risks collarbone/shoulder injury- all because toe overlap stopped forward momentum

I hate toe overlap and one of my friends actually crashed in the parking lot because of this! During a low speed turn and he had to go to the ER. Seems a bit extreme on my road bike (Cervelo S2 size 51) where my toe overlaps by about 2 centimeters at 3 o'clock crank position (170mm crank). My Cervelo P2 (same 51) doesn't seem to have the overlap! It actually has about 1.5 cm of space between a turning wheel and the same shoe at the 3 o'clock position.

Toe overlap to me proves how stupid some engineers and builders can be. Toe over lap can make you fall on a bike unexpectedly. Yes you can have the leg down when you take a sharp corner, but there is going to be some situation when you unexpectedly hit. Just hope that when it does it does not hit at some dangerous situation and make you go down. I may sell one of my bike frames. I did get a awsome deal on it and is practically new and has a complete Campy Centaur gruppo. So I may be shopping for a good frame >>>
@SurpriseMeJT5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what kind of riding you do. If you are riding with fewer stop and starts, then wheel overlap isn't as much of a big deal and the handling of the bike will feel nicer than a bike that is longer, which will be more comfortable riding in urban environments with many stop and go or tight manuvers.
@Exgrmbl2 жыл бұрын
It's not about "stupid engineers". Reducing it to that shows stupidity on the other hand in not understanding the factors in designing a frame, it's a balancing act.

I made a sharp turn last weekend, hit my toe, fell and broke my hip! Not safe. No bike should do that to you. I have about 2 inches of overlap. I won’t ride that bike again. How do I find a bike with adequate toe room?
@LinhTran-gf5yv3 жыл бұрын
2 inches overlap is too much, either your feet too big or you got the wrong bike size.
@zuraganeko773 жыл бұрын
Buy a bike with longer wheelbase, or change the fork with more rake. Usually endurance bike or touring bike has more wheelbase.
@brauljo2 жыл бұрын
Toe overlap is so dumb, bikes could just have slacker headtubes to lengthen the front center and eliminate toe overlap, then also have increased fork offsets to keep the trail constant across sizes. Fortunately, increasing fork offset also reduces toe overlap, so the headtube wouldn't even need to be much slacker.

Crank length...
@jeffbrunton32917 жыл бұрын
Great advice. But please focus more on the wheels for shorter riders. . If you are 5’2” or less and buy a bike with 700c wheels, you will probably need a 43 to 48cm seatpost bike, and will probably have toe overlap. A common problem with kids using small adult bikes. Or because you have added mudguards, or have enormous feet or extra long cranks. Not a big problem, just be careful going slow doing very tight turns Or, the real solution for shorter riders, get a road bike with 650c wheels with shorter cranks. Sadly no quality CX bikes / tyres with 650c wheels. Maybe some of the new 650b wheels and tyres will work Cleats should usually be put at the back of shoes, so is not the cause / solution to toe overlap. You need a certain amount of your foot on the pedal, so don’t use that to reduce over toe overlap

That's what I think, it can often be a sign that the wheels are too large for the frame you're using. I think the secondary cause is cranks that are too long for the size of the frame as well.
