The $100 colorist offers you choices of what film look you’d like because those are all LUTs they’ve created. Then they slap it on your footage and tweak it. That way they can crank out 10/day. Problem is those LUTs are created for other projects.

And most of the time they apply the LUT the wrong way, like not paying attention to the correct color space settings. All the info that comes with the RAW footage.

Why some refuse raw footage? The only thing that differ from a log footage is that you don’t need to specify any input color space & gamma as DaVinci will handle it automatically. Of course you cannot change it, for good. But still you’re free to color in whatever intermediary color space that you prefer.

Hi There! I just stumbled over this video and decided to do my own grade with your shots. Are you still planning to do a video with grades from your subscribers? BTW: Love your Abandoned Cameras series.
@tysonbirmann Жыл бұрын
I have so many issues with this video. This isn't a critisizm of your work or your videos. My problem is you are judging a 'craft' without proper context or fairness to the artists. Not to mention a lack of knowledge of the work you are asking them to do. (and a drastic under valuation of that work). A.... Color correction and color grading aren't the same thing. Correction means simply taking log or raw footage and moving it into a viewable colorspace with basic tone changes to small elements like white Balance, Tint, saturation and basic Shaddow/Midtone/hightlights relationship changes. GRADING is actually creating multilayered and tracked eliments that can be manipulated seperately in order to create a dymanic look. B.... you obviously don't know what you are looking at. The $100 Guy did what you asked... you asked him to match the footage in order to make them look like they are the same. You handed him footage were ALL OVER THE PLACE. You basicly asked for a stylized look that matched and then critisized the work when it DID match your suggestion. You need to set realistic expectations. If you had a client ask for a basic interivew shoot and then got mad because it didn't look like a marvel movie. The lower priced people weren't given any real guidence. You don't shoot for a client with NO questions do you? You discuss goals and looks and expectations so you can deliver what they ask for. You can work with 10 DPs or Directors and have 10 opinions of what they expect. Not to mention that you are removing the need for intent in SHOOTING. The footage and the end goal need to align. You shot all of these clips with difffent settings, lenses, conditions... and expect a color grade to fix your lack of planning a shoot. (since it isn't 1 shoot). C... you need to conider the money here. 'You get what you pay for' is the obvious thing to say here. Let's just say that the average time (including project set up... communication and up/download time... you are talkinga bout a MINIMUM of an hour... and that is super basic work. So at $5 you aren't paying minimum wage. I'd say to do this work it would be a minimum of 2 hours to do a decent job. So if you are trying asking people with skills and gear and time invested... $25 an hour would be low. $50 an hour is more like it. So really the only one you paid a reasonalbe amount is the last person. Overall, You are misrepresenting what a colorist does and the value they should have.

the grading progression in this looked like the IQ bell curve lol. Awful at the cheapest and most expensive extremes, pretty ok in the middle. But the least these people could have done, especially the 50 and 100$ guys, would be to do the grading in Resolve. These are all obviously Premiere grades.

The problem is that these are all graded with LUTs. These Fiverr artists don’t have time to do custom grades because proper color correction and grading (it’s never just grading) takes a lot of time. The best they can usually do is to be sure they use LUTs which work well with the footage, and do a little bit of tweaking.
@redwanism Жыл бұрын
Not everyone uses LUTs, I start from the scratch and take enough time for this.
@joelmulder Жыл бұрын
@@redwanism are you a fiverr colorist? (Genuine question). In any case, if these people are doing custom grades, they’re not very good at it. Also, for such a low price, they’d be crazy to not use LUTs because obviously people find it acceptable and pay for it.

I'm very new to this video editing and grading but I feel like you should never change colours a lot because then it's looks shitty and anyone can tell that the colours are fake. Colour grading is about slightly changing the colour in a subtle look not just putting colours over and over
