Enjoyed the information shared here about raising the ceiling. Nice quick hits as well with the framing square angles and the jig for cutting the collar ties. The difference is always in the details.

I never thought about doing it that way, not a full cathedral but higher is what I need. Plus, this will support your rafters and side walls.

Great idea about pre-framiing those spaces for the new windows. I've never had a contractor do that. I've heard you can raise the ceiling joists on a rafter system as long as it isn't a 1/3 higher than the total existing rafter length, is there any truth to that? Nice detail work! All looks so clean. @@patricksimone1238

Noob here. Can this be done on a hip roof? Also, for collar ties, can the original ceiling joists be reused (pending good condition) since they will be shorter after raising them? Would use one single new collar tie then cut the old ceiling joist out and replace the next one. I would not remove them all first! Also, I realize consulting a structural engineer is required but I'm contemplating purchasing an older cottage style house with 7' ceiling. Thanks! Great video!

Great video! Doing a little research to see if we can get our ceiling raised a foot. I was concerned because we had 2x4 rafters but that seems to be what you’re working with?
@patricksimone1238
@patricksimone1238 4 жыл бұрын
Lucas Rayala hey buddy,In my case I had existing 2x8 rafters and also had engineered blueprints.you should be careful if you only have 2x4 rafters because you will be adding additional stress to them Good luck! And thanks for watching

Raising the rafters this way, do you have to add braces down to the top sill plates? I’m renovating my living room, house was built in 1947 and has ~7.5 ceiling I’d to raise atleast a foot, maybe two. I had originally thought about doing it this way, but wasn’t sure if it displaces the load differently than having them sitting on the tops of the walls.
@damionbrooker715
@damionbrooker715 Жыл бұрын
This method transfers so much weight that WAS on the top sill plate and down to the ground NOW all that weight goes directly to the roof decking frame - not good.😬

There are plenty of videos of people raising the ceiling by modifying the trusses. My situation is different. I haven't put on the roof yet. I want to stack 2 more feet on top of my 8' Walls. I wish I could find a video about this. This is just a shed or garage.

Rookies are fun, I had a guy one time that had degrees in everything, very smart, but everytime I gave him a measurement he would cut the siding wrong, so I threw pieces of aluminum down to him to with measurements on, he still couldn't cut them to right length, so I said it isn't working out.

@@HulaShack1 Well, that is a bold statement... Talk poorly about our future generations.... or, teach them like someone most of us. It is a fact that generations have said this about the generations after them for centuries. But, somehow we are the smartest, most advanced people since recorded history, and this continues... All I know is my daughters are skilled at things I couldn't even dream of as a child.
