@fizzywizzy02 жыл бұрын
@@robertnagy3942 numbers 80+ are kind of weird, 80 in french is quatre-vingt (which literally translates to four twenties) and 90 is quatre-vingt-dix (which is four twenties plus ten). The Académie Française is definitely not going to change how these numbers work as they have always worked like this. They aren't trying to make it easier, they are trying to "preserve" it. They won't even allow official gender neutral pronouns, so a group of people with males and females is referred to with the male pronoun.
@5PctJuice2 жыл бұрын
@@fizzywizzy0 It would be so easy to just say "C'est septante (70), huitante (80), et neufante (90) maintenant". That "preserves the French language" in that it preserves the standard set by 40, 50, and 60.

I know sweden has a similar thing, because back in the day of the latter 1700s the swedish languege seemed to be in the process of disapearing due to the over-abundence of french usage in the upper classes. So this one guy instituted a council like this to work to integrate new words and make them swedish and make them make sense instead of the language slowly having words be replaced. Taht's how swedish now has the word "najs" comming from english "nice" as well as "okej" "okay" and even "paraply", "toalett" and "trottoar" from french. But these words just look like the descriptions of the english words, not french-ified borrowed words.

While it is not a ban per say, it is a recommendation by the government on how english named stuff should be named. I'm not even sure if they will even get used anyway.
