*The French conversion of the battleship Normandie into the aircraft carrier Béarn reflected the growing recognition of the importance of naval aviation. This was similar to the British conversion of the cruisers Courageous and Glorious into aircraft carriers during the same period. However, Béarn also demonstrated the limitations of conversions compared to dedicated aircraft carrier designs. Her slow speed and lack of anti-aircraft firepower left her vulnerable, as demonstrated during World War II, when Béarn was primarily an aircraft transport rather than a direct combat ship.*

The Washington Treaty was basically a joke when you consider at that time battleships were being made obsolete by air-power. And what were the least restricted ships under that Treaty, you guessed it, carriers.
@HMSPrinceofWhales53p2 ай бұрын
Seeing as it's not until the 1950s air deployed weapons are truly able to eclipse battleships the Washington naval treaty doesn't affect the power balance/development much. Besides it would be another 15ish years before any country developed a naval air doctorne that could start to threaten fleets beyond the accounting ascoect. your statement seems to carry more hindsight then it should. Besides the more immediate effect of the treaty is it stopped a naval buildup to war between the US, Britain, and Japan.

@@HMSPrinceofWhales53p I'm sure the crew of the Bizmark felt that way.

@@HMSPrinceofWhales53p Airpower rendered battleships obsolete at the strategic level around the very end of the 30s, because that’s when the overriding advantage of carriers (greater offensive radius) really kicked in. Every single advantage battleships had over them was made largely or entirely irrelevant by that one disadvantage, since you actually have to be able to shoot at something to pose any threat to it.
@bkjeong43022 ай бұрын
Carriers actually were also restricted under the WNT, just not to the same extent as battleships.

Cheney and kamala would both buy this Normandie/bearn and think they really upped americas defense, but Cheney would be sly enough to get a kickback😂

I would have liked to be in the French navy. They get champagne and mistresses onboard ship. And the best gravy.
