Regulars of French Battle Order videos may notice that the NCO ranks here are different from the infantry video from 2 months ago : that's because the French army has traditionaly been divided since the monarchy era between "armes de pied" ("corps of foot") and "armes montées" ("corps of horse"). That means that the infantry, engineering, light army aviation (helicopters) and signal corps as well as the Legion are "foot corps" : they have regular ranks with yellow/gold insignia, are organized into companies and sections etc. the usual However the cavalry, logistics, materiel corps as well as the gendarmerie are considered "horse corps", with different rank names reminiscent of old times cavalry (brigadier, maréchal des logis), white/silver insignia, are organized into squadrons and platoons, have smaller square-shaped standards rather than big rectangular flags, and many other differences in terms of terminology, appearance and traditions. The artillery corps is technicaly "horse" (since canons used to be horse-drawn, same reason why logistics and materiel are "horse") and shares some stuff with the other "horse" corps, but they have "foot" style ranks and some artillery-specific terms, like batteries instead of squadrons or companies. The Chasseurs (light, mountain and parachute infantry) are the reverse : they are infantry and thus "foot" but have "horse" ranks, because they were originaly mixed skirmishing units with both infantry and cavalry.
@louisgangloff3 ай бұрын
Everything you say is right except a little think, there is two criterias : in one hand the "armes à pieds" use the terms "sergent" et "caporal", the "armes montées" use "maréchal des logis" et "brigadier" ; and in other hand the heavy units use yellow galons, the light units use white galons. That explain why chasseur use white galons with "sergent" ... *in most cases* because we love exceptions to the rules in France.

@@lilianbeck9349 In training, and of course in ops, mixed structures are the rule, a combat company group will be either infantry or cavalry based with attachments and detachmrnt from other arms, eg 3 inf platoons with company HQ reinforced by a cavalry platoon, an engineer squad at least, fire support team (generally from artillery). Same principle at the battalion and brigade level. Part of the company commander course is knowledge of other arms capabilities and limitations.

Fun bit, the gendarmerie use yellow ranks for it's riot unit and the republican guard. And because nothing can be simple: -adjudant are using the oposite color or their corps, chief adjudant use the right color. Good luck sorting them out once in a army that use both ranks. -the trick is to look at the colors of the grenade on the shoulder ranks. If they match, it's a chief adjudant, if not, it's an adjudant. -there are actually two sub division of the gendarmerie that doesn't wear the grenade on the shoulder insigna -pretty much no one use shoulder rank insigna and instead favor a chest velcro patch rank, which is simplified -the single chevron NCO rank which is used as a cadet NCO in the rest of the army is used as a full fledged rank for NCO with less than four years of service -one single chevron or two chevron indicate not a maréchal des logis, but a gendarme. -however, if a gendarme has white ranks insigna and grenade on the shoulder, then it mean they are part of the support corps and thus are maréchal des logis -if a gendarme has a single white chevron but on a blue shoulder rank insigna, he is a maréchal des logis, but not an NCO, since he is actually a deputy gendarme, so a rank and file, but the highest of them. -remember that no one use the shoulder rank insigna and use the chest velcro. There is litteraly no way to distinguish an NCO with a single chevron from deputy gendarme maréchal des logis with a single chevron. -There is finally a raging debate about how the chief brigadier rank is supposed to be worn on the chest velcro. Blue-blue-white or white-blue-blue. Finally, the legion use green chevron for it's private and corporal ranks.

The French very often introduced new ways of waging war. Everyone made fun of the AMX 10RC which was a tank on wheels, in the end it was the one which most proved its effectiveness in light combat. They also invented the CAESAR, a rapid wheeled howitzer for maneuver firing. Even their “revised” older generation vehicles compete with the most modern ones because they are very efficient. The 40mm CTA cannon is very flexible since it can shoot programmable ammo and makes it capable of facing infantry, drones, small structures and light vehicles, whil you can still us APFSDS for medium AFVs. As we have seen in Ukraine - an autocannon can deal serious damage even to a MBT. It might not destroy it totally and kill the crew - but without sensors, optics or radios - a modern MBT isn't much more than a very, very heavy paperweight. And that Bradley Bushmaster in Ukraine was "only" 25mm. 40mm is a whole different ball game - with significantly bigger payload.

It kinda feels like they took the idea of the M3A2 Bradley CFV, removed the dismount capacity, made it french (trackless and lower armor. Not actually lighter funnily enough) and put every possible modern sensor in it. A potent autocannon, combined with a good ATGM. But with all the sensor capabilities of the modern day and a ridiculously high top speed. The perfect evolution of the armored recon concept. Also the return of the cannon-missile pairing in the french army. Took us long enough

Serious question: why not pair the AMX-10CR with the new Jaguars as replacement to yhe VBLs with their weaker 7.62×51MM NATO/.308 machine guns, that way then the Jaguars can engage tanks and soft targets like pick ups and suicide bomb cars and the AMX-10CRs with their 105 mm F2 BK MECA L/47 medium-pressure guns can destroy APCs, IFVs, Fortifications, barriers and other things like that, giving their Recon platoons or calvary platoons a wide range of flexibility of fire support?
@quakethedoombringer3 ай бұрын
The AMX is an antiquated design and has seized production decades ago. The VBL is for fast scouting. If there is a tank, the Jaguar already has the ATGM. For lightly armored vehicles, the 40mm should suffice
@theemoTV193 ай бұрын
@@quakethedoombringer KK, I just thought that if a massive gun on a car like the AMX-10CR would have good use and be a morale booster is all, thank you for clarification! :)

In reality the 40mm canon is most dangerous to 105mm for three reasons. First- Stability 2- Rafale fire. Two Bradley have destroy one T-90 with canon in rafale fire 3- Munitions is best in France. Is not comparable to OBF 105 G2

I wish we had something similar to jaguar in the US Army, closes thing I think we have is an M3 Bradley or maybe a Stryker Dragoon with no dismounts. If the M1117 was still an option maybe mount the same Dragoon turret or a Cockerill CPWS 20-25-3 05:16 I don’t get why they wouldn’t just put a 50cal on all the vbl’s (at least in a normal mount and not a turret) I know it’s probably an ammo/logistics thing. But with just a MMG it can’t engage much if needed. I know they are supposed to work as actual recon and not like the US shoot and see what shoots back, but still.
@ombrepourpre75623 ай бұрын
Because the guns are in remote control, to not expose the crew. And yes, they are recon first. Fire support and fast response second only.
@omarrp143 ай бұрын
@@ombrepourpre7562 he didn’t mention that they are remote controlled. Also most of those remote control mounts can take either a MMG or 50 cal and maybe a 40mm. I know the French have their own CROW system, and I’ve seen it on a VBL, it just wasn’t shown or mentioned here.
@antoinegsf-ep35824 күн бұрын
I spent most of my career in a VBL, supporting the AMX10. Most VBLs do not have remotely operated turrets. But the vehicle is very small, 3 people. A driver, a passenger and a guy in the back who gets his legs kicked in with the backpacks and equipment. But the VBL is very quiet, and amphibious. In many exercises, we were able to get close in the vehicle to barely 150m from the "hostiles". The 7.62 machine gun that equips most of the guys is used more for self-defense than for assault. On my VBL, there was an ERYX firing position instead of the machine gun. The French army does almost all its maneuvers in SGTIA or GTIA, so we are extremely used to working with the different weapons around us. Having very few resources and a fairly small army format for our country, forces us to have a different doctrine, focused on the offensive and rapid actions. Without doubt a format inherited from the Napoleonic army corps, a set of armies including Infantry/Cavalry/Artillery/Engineers/Equipment & Transport which are autonomous but can work quickly together. This is typically what was done in Mali

Can’t wait for the new vbl replacements, basically, trading amphibious capabilities for a 4 man mini griphon that hybrid so it can go full stealth with no noise on batteries, can strafe and shoot amazing agility due to each wheel capable of independent manouver, a 7.62 or 50 cal, and built in drone nest for up 2 4 observation and designation drones plus 2 at leasr 2 akheron or loitering munitions with a posible AA mode. virtually no infrared signature ( on electric full stealth. And due to each wheel being independent huge clearance off the ground. And off course full scorpion integration. They got 2 prototypes racing for the contract, they each have different thing like the one that can straff has no atgm ect, reguardless french love thier jeeps for everything from scouting to escorts , they’ll stick them in everything, they also have your expectations of high intensity armor and mine resistance. Biggest change for th french army since switching from Famas to HK 416. It’s the last “new vehicle save for the scaf” of the scorpion project to be unveiled with it the corehaull will be finished .

@@siretriste4045 no way of telling for sure until Ajax is actually operating, though it should be mentioned that Ajax and its variants will replace almost all the tracked armoured vehicles in British service so is in a similar situation with regards to spare parts.

@immortallvulture Ha yeah I remember when the British army were saying it would just replace the CVRT; and not the warrior. Kind of interesting they're sticking with the Hornet UAVs, especially in the context of vehicles that clearly have the space for more. If I were a backseat general I'd suggest giving them all NX70s and perhaps hold even larger types like hand-launched fixed-wing drones at the company HQ level.

imo, I think that the French have gone the more mobility way because they have fully aknowledged that the spear is stronger than any shield, since years ago from the experience return from the front, for years to come... so, better not be where the spear hit than to stand their ground and pray the shield hold...
