Every day, nearly 3,000 dugout canoes cross the Oyapock River, which serves as a natural demarcation in South America between Brazil and French Guiana. The river's banks are the scene of trafficking, illegal immigration and unlawful gold panning. Locals play cat and mouse with the border police, who try their best to monitor the comings and goings. The Covid-19 pandemic should have meant a hermetic closure of the border. Instead, it showed more than ever how uncontrollable this frontier is. FRANCE 24's Fanny Lothaire and Laura Damase report, with Séverine Bardon and Olivier Marzin.

I’m a French citizen and went to the French Guiana/Brazil border. Coming back into town, the gendarmes controlled my French passport and Guiana plated rental car three times whereas on the river separating both countries and with boats full of Brazilians and others crossing the whole day into French Guiana, no one gendarme could be found.

@@freedomm It is smaller territory but more important strategically for military. That is why they invest so much in Hawaii. When someone would want to attack US, they could just stop them there

I mean compared to the rest of South America it is pretty rich. Geography and demographics determine that French Guiana will always be poor relative to france.

Wtf, did you watch the video? The people do the crossing both ways and they are mostly indigenous civilians, it's weird that there's a colony of France in this day and age there at all.
