Canada has become the new El Dorado for many African migrants, who have seen Europe and the United States close their borders. But they face a dangerous journey across South and North America. Every year, some of them die on their way to a better life, amid widespread indifference to their plight. For five months, our reporters followed Rosette and her family from DR Congo on this long, dangerous odyssey across ten countries.
In the space of five months, Rosette and her family have travelled more than 20,000 kilometres - risking their lives. First, they fled DR Congo for Brazil. Then, from Sao Paulo, where they arrived on a tourist visa, they crossed South America - including the perilous Colombian jungle - before reaching the United States and finally their Canadian El Dorado. They traversed ten countries in total, in the hands of powerful clandestine networks of people smugglers and cartels, and corrupt policemen or soldiers who control the borders. They often crossed paths with cocaine smugglers heading for North America.
►► Now hiring! Unemployment in Quebec hits record low
During the five months that we spent with Rosette, her husband Godet and their daughters Maria and Pauline, we saw many other migrants heading north to Canada. On this route, where a human life is worth just a few handfuls of dollars, Congolese, Malians, Senegalese, Nepalese and Bangladeshis try to blend in with the flow of South American and Caribbean migrants. But some will never reach their destination.
We spent longer on the most dangerous stage of the journey: a vast stretch of jungle called the Darien Gap, the only way of getting from Colombia to Panama. Finally, we reached the Canadian border, which is seeing an unprecedented wave of illegal migrants crossing daily to seek asylum, all of them desperate for better lives.
Report by François Rihouay. A Keep In News production with teams from France 24, Radio Canada, and RCN (Colombia).

The Scribe to be honest as African European. I think if any of my relatives in Africa would have that money and would live in one of those war countries . They would go to an country nearby and start a new life. But a lot of them see Europe ,us, Canada etc. as fastest way of getting money ..

This same "bravery" is seen in tons of migrant videos specially those sneaking into Europe. How many women and children do you see in those migrant videos? Not a lot in proportion. Are they "holding the fort" with AK-47s while their often-able-bodied sons and husbands are migrating abroad?

True, opening a business in Africa is a great suggestion but they do not want to work...in Canada WELFARE for life and soap opera every day on TV. Oh, subsidized housing, special diet, metro pass, dental, eye glasses voucher, discount for Hydro, free college, etc, etc...everything at taxpayers expense. And my CPP after working in this country for 24 years is whooping $900.00 a month......a loaf of bread costs between $3.99 and $4.99, Jarlsberg (yellow) cheese at Longos $ 42.92 a kilo....welcome to working part of Canada versus illegals.

@bike4peaceRTW
@bike4peaceRTW 5 жыл бұрын
walshj- if you're a citizen then they can't deny you entry, permanent resident is different. They can deny you entry and even revoke your residency if the basis on which you received the permanent residency was that you were fleeing persecution or war in your home country (i.e. refugee/asylum). Returning to your home country to visit demonstrates it is no longer dangerous for you and is justification to terminate your residency status. That's how it works in the US anyway and I assume most Western countries are probably similar.

I live in America and feel like I may need to move to another country. I have Lupus, Graves disease, have had 4 hernia surgeries, currently have a new one, arthritis of the right knee, high blood pressure, cysts on ovaries, asthma, fainting spells, heart palpitations, chronic cough, interstitial cystitis etc. and I am uninsured. I am only in my 30's and unable to work a regular job due to all my health ailments. My son and I are both uninsured. I have applied for medical assistance countless times and have been denied. Yet my illegal immigrant family members get free health insurance through the same county I live in. I feel I will die soon if I do not get the help I need. My only option may be to move somewhere with Universal Healthcare. It will be better than what I have now. To make matters worse, under Obamacare, if you are uninsured, you have to pay a fine or face jail time. I thought America was land of the free?

sorry for my English. I am Hispanic (Colombian) and the situation in our countries is not very nice if we compare it with a first world country, but at least we have the basics to survive and not have needs. There are Latin American countries that have poverty similar to those of African countries, such as Honduras, El Salvador and Haiti. The fact is that if the US and Canada do not want their countries to be filled with illegal migrants, their leaders should not invest in wars in Africa and especially in their own continent. They should encourage investment in these countries, create political stability and not support dictatorships. The solution is not to create a wall, the solution is that these people do not think about leaving their countries.
@kbengson9163
@kbengson9163 4 жыл бұрын
Your English is great. The solution is to allow people into the country through the proper legal channels set forth not border hopping and passing thru at least 7-10 Countries in which you can safely seek "asylum" in instead of trying to get to the US or CAN, in addition, make the penalties and fines so steep for any company or employer in the US or CAN who hires an illegal that it could threaten to bankrupt them.

These people are coming from countries with good soil and weather. Why don't they start their own subsistence/ commercial farms. They could export their produce. I honestly do not think that moving to developed countries will change. It will just make things worse as more migrant relocate, these countries will soon run out of resources to accommodate everyone else else this will soon cause war as some of these migrant cause disputes in foreign countries. If its lack of peace and stability lacking in our African countries then government should look into this matter, invest, cease corruption and develop their countries. How long will a keep on running? Who is going to bring back peace and development to put countries for the future generation? Only we can take action than running away. Let those greedy leaders and those causing political instability be removed.

It's not the same thing my dear. Sometimes we just want our children to have better opportunities. In Cameroon for example, if you are not super rich, it's pretty hard for ur child to become a medical doctor, no matter his intelligence. First reason, bribe to get to government school, second reason high cost of private schools. This is just a little example.

Could someone please explain to that man blaming "the whites" for all his problems, that referring to Canadian folks as 'the whites' is racist and he'd better change his tune quickly or he's not welcome in my country. And his poor wife in tears, following him reluctantly on his foolish ideological mission....Sad. I wish the family well. Despite their misguided thinking.

It's not a bad arrest. He didn't sneak out, they didn't chase him, there was no force situation that happened on both sides. He voluntarily continued crossing the border and he knows the consequences as explained by the border officer. Did you hear that? He has been transferred to Montreal as an asylum seeker. There, his paper will be processed.
